We have listened together to a famous and beautiful passage from the Book of Exodus, in
which the sacred author tells of God's presentation of the Decalogue to Israel. One detail
makes an immediate impression: the announcement of the Ten Commandments is introduced
by a significant reference to the liberation of the People of Israel. The text says: “I am the
Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage” (Ex
20: 2). Thus, the Decalogue is intended as a confirmation of the freedom gained.
Today's liturgy offers us a second message: The Mosaic Law was totally fulfilled in Jesus,
who revealed God's wisdom and love through the mystery of the Cross, “a stumbling block to
Jews and an absurdity to Gentiles; but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ
is the power of God and the wisdom of God” (I Cor 1: 23-24).
The Gospel just proclaimed refers precisely to this: Jesus drove the merchants and moneychangers out of the temple. Through the verse of a Psalm: “Zeal for your house has consumed
me”, the Evangelist provides a key for the interpretation of this significant episode. And Jesus
was “consumed” by this “zeal” for the “house of God”, which was being used for purposes
other than those for which it was intended. To the amazement of everyone present, he
responded to the request of the religious leaders who demand evidence of his authority by
saying: “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up” (Jn 2:19). His enemies were
to destroy that “temple”, but after three days he would rebuild it through the Resurrection. In
this Lenten season, while we are preparing to relive this central event of our salvation in the
Easter triduum, we are already looking at the Crucified One, seeing in him the brightness of
the Risen One.

Tercer Domingo de Cuaresma

Hemos escuchado juntos una famosa y bella página del libro del Éxodo, en la que el autor
sagrado narra la entrega del Decálogo a Israel por parte de Dios. Un detalle llama enseguida la
atención: la enumeración de los diez mandamientos se introduce con una significativa referencia
a la liberación del pueblo de Israel. Dice el texto: “Yo soy el Señor, tu Dios, que te saqué de
Egipto, de la esclavitud” (Ex 20, 2). Por tanto, el Decálogo quiere ser una confirmación de la
libertad conquistada.
La liturgia de hoy nos ofrece un segundo mensaje: la Ley mosaica se cumplió plenamente en
Jesús, que reveló la sabiduría y el amor de Dios mediante el misterio de la cruz, “escándalo para
los judíos, necedad para los griegos —como nos dice san Pablo en la segunda lectura—; pero
para los llamados sean judíos o griegos, Cristo es la fuerza y sabiduría de Dios” (1 Co 1, 23-24).
Precisamente a este misterio se refiere la página evangélica que se acaba de proclamar: Jesús
expulsa del templo a los vendedores y a los cambistas. El evangelista ofrece la clave de lectura
de este significativo episodio en el versículo de un salmo: “El celo por tu casa me devora”.
A Jesús lo “devora” este “celo” por la “casa de Dios”, utilizada con un fin diferente de aquel
para el que estaba destinada. Ante la petición de los responsables religiosos, que pretenden un
signo de su autoridad, en medio del asombro de los presentes, afirma: “Destruid este templo, y
en tres días lo levantaré” (Jn 2, 19). Sus adversarios destruirán este “templo”, pero él, al cabo de
tres días, lo reconstruirá mediante la resurrección. Mientras en este tiempo cuaresmal nos
preparamos para revivir en el triduo pascual este acontecimiento central de nuestra salvación,
contemplamos al Crucificado vislumbrando ya en él el resplandor del Resucitado.
