Make our hearts hungry and thirsty for you. Recreate our minds and hearts with the fire of your Word during our mission. Open us to the sweet presence of the Holy Spirit. We want to be filled with Joy and Peace! We pray for the grace to say, “Yes” to you! We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen! O Mary, my Mother, I offer you my soul, my mind, and my heart. Make of me God's instrument. Give me a penetrating mind to discover, firm to judge, open to understand, free to serve the truth; an honest mind in telling what it sees rather than what it wants to see; a tolerant mind which does not dictate to other people, but which explain what it sees clearly; a mind infused by the light and the truth of your Son Jesus, patient in faith, while waiting for the vision of eternal life. 173 MISAS EN ESPAÑOL: SÁBADO 7:00PM Y DOMINGO 1:00PM - AÑO DE LA FE The Ascension of the Lord Page 10 May 12, 2013 TAKEN FROM SIGHT In biblical texts, a time period lasting forty days, months, or years is always a period of testing, trial, probation, or discipline, ending in restoration, revival, or renewal. There are at least ten instances in the Old Testament and New Testament in which the number forty occurs. For example, Noah sailed in his ark after it rained for forty days and nights; Moses was on the mountain forty days and nights; the Israelites wandered for forty years in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt; Jesus fasted in the wilderness for forty days and was seen on the earth for forty days after his resurrection until his ascension into heaven. The Ascension marks the completion of Jesus’ earthly ministry. Along with the Resurrection, the Ascension underlines Jesus’ claim that he is truly God and truly human, the Messiah—the one who saves. Early Christian artists showed the importance of the Ascension as the final overthrow of Satan’s power. Jesus is depicted as a lion conquering the dragon, Satan. Evil and death are not the end. Nowadays, Christians are being challenged by newly fashionable atheist writers, who assume that all believers are literal fundamentalists who think that heaven is just “up there” above the clouds. The Church, more wisely, does not dwell on where heaven is, but what it means to have a Savior who has gone to prepare a place for us and who will return at the end of time. Whenever we participate in the Eucharistic liturgy we are invited to repeat the mystery of our faith: “Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.” So Jesus is taken from our earthly sight because he has returned to the Father, where he intercedes for us and assures us of the continual outpouring of the Holy Spirit—our strength for the journey. Extend hope to someone you know: volunteer to mentor a child, make regular calls or visits to someone who is homebound, give material help to a person who is unemployed. That’s how incapable he felt of playing his Bach invention faster. He stared at Mr. Simons in disbelief. “Gavin, what did I just ask you to do?” “You said to play it faster, sir.” “Well, why are you sitting there staring at me? What are you waiting for? Play it faster.” In today’s two accounts of the ascension of Christ into heaven, the disciples seem to be experiencing the same kind of numbness. Christ is asking them to do the seemingly impossible. While joyful that he had been raised and was ascending to power, perhaps they did not yet have the confidence to be his witnesses “to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). They had to wait to be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. What are we waiting for? —Virginia Stillwell LIVING GOD’S WORD We may feel that our faith is too new or that we don’t pray enough to witness the forgiveness of sins available through Christ. But we who have been clothed and anointed with the Spirit don’t need anything else. We can go forth with confident hope to witness that Christ will keep his promise of eternal life.
