A FAMILY PRAYER FOR THE YEAR OF FAITH
O God our Father, in Jesus you call all Christian families and homes to be signs of living faith.
By the light of the Holy Spirit, lead us to be thankful for the gift of faith, and by that gift
may we grow in our relationship with Jesus, your Son, and be confident witnesses to Christian hope and joy to
all we meet. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

MISSION PRAYER
God, our Father, we thank you for this time of renewal.
Make our hearts hungry and thirsty for you.
Recreate our minds and hearts with the fire of your Word
during our mission.
Open us to the sweet presence of the Holy Spirit.
We want to be filled with Joy and Peace!
We pray for the grace to say, “Yes” to you!
We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.
Amen!
O Mary, my Mother,
I offer you my soul, my mind, and my heart.
Make of me God's instrument.
Give me a penetrating mind to discover,
firm to judge, open to understand, free to serve the truth;
an honest mind in telling what it sees rather than what it
wants to see;
a tolerant mind which does not dictate to other people,
but which explain what it sees clearly;
a mind infused by the light and the truth of your Son Jesus,
patient in faith, while waiting for the vision of eternal life.
Amen.

Diocese of Fresno “Providing Help. Creating Hope.”
CATHOLIC CHARITIES
In the past year, Catholic Charities has provided
service to over 110,000 clients throughout the Diocese and
have given away over 1,600,000 pounds of food. That equates
to approximately 2 cargo ships. The average family income for
those seeking assistance was less than $8,000.00 per year
and forty three percent of the clients were under the age of 17.
For your information, with every dollar that is donated to
Catholic Charities, 87 cents goes directly back to programs
and services.
Please help us to continue providing these valuable
services to those less fortunate by giving of your treasure
during our annual Special Collection the weekend of
May18th – 19th. Feel free to contact Kelly Lilles, Executive
Director at Catholic Charities email: [email protected] or by
phone 559-237-0851. Thank you and God bless you for your
generosity and please come down and see us anytime for a
tour of the Agency.
RESEARCH TODAY FOR A CANCER-FREE TOMORROW
What if your involvement ultimately leads to eliminate cancer as a major health problem for this and future
generations? The AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY will be enrolling participants for their newest research study, the
Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) in the greater Fresno area this week. Individuals may choose to participate if they
are willing to make a long-term commitment to the study (completing surveys periodically over the next 20-30 years),
are between the ages of 30 and 65 years old and have never been diagnosed with cancer. Cancer Survivors are
asked to help spread the word, and encourage family members and friends to enroll. For more information visit

Equivalente a
dona a Caridades Católicas, 87 centavos regresa

The Ascension of the Lord
Page 10
May 12, 2013
TAKEN FROM SIGHT
In biblical texts, a time period lasting forty days, months, or years is always a period of testing, trial, probation, or discipline,
ending in restoration, revival, or renewal. There are at least ten instances in the Old Testament
and New Testament in which the number forty occurs. For example, Noah sailed in his ark after it
rained for forty days and nights; Moses was on the mountain forty days and nights; the Israelites
wandered for forty years in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt; Jesus fasted in the wilderness
for forty days and was seen on the earth for forty days after his resurrection until his ascension
into heaven. The Ascension marks the completion of Jesus’ earthly ministry. Along with the
Resurrection, the Ascension underlines Jesus’ claim that he is truly God and truly human, the
Messiah—the one who saves. Early Christian artists showed the importance of the Ascension as
the final overthrow of Satan’s power. Jesus is depicted as a lion conquering the dragon, Satan. Evil
and death are not the end. Nowadays, Christians are being challenged by newly fashionable atheist
writers, who assume that all believers are literal fundamentalists who think that heaven is just “up
there” above the clouds. The Church, more wisely, does not dwell on where heaven is, but what it
means to have a Savior who has gone to prepare a place for us and who will return at the end of
time. Whenever we participate in the Eucharistic liturgy we are invited to repeat the mystery of
our faith: “Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.” So Jesus is taken from our
earthly sight because he has returned to the Father, where he intercedes for us and assures us of the continual outpouring of the Holy
Spirit—our strength for the journey. Copyright © 2009, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
Living Stewardship Now
The gift of the Ascension is transforming hope. Extend hope to someone you know: volunteer to mentor a child, make regular calls
or visits to someone who is homebound, give material help to a person who is unemployed.

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD
Gavin’s piano teacher might just as well have told him to fly
around the room. That’s how incapable he felt of playing his
Bach invention faster. He stared at Mr. Simons in disbelief.
“Gavin, what did I just ask you to do?” “You said to play it
faster, sir.” “Well, why are you sitting there staring at me? What
are you waiting for? Play it faster.”
In today’s two accounts of the ascension of Christ into heaven,
the disciples seem to be experiencing the same kind of
numbness. Christ is asking them to do the seemingly impossible.
While joyful that he had been raised and was ascending to
power, perhaps they did not yet have the confidence to be his
witnesses “to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). They had to wait
to be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. What are we
waiting for?
—Virginia Stillwell
LIVING GOD’S WORD
We may feel that our faith is too new or that we don’t pray
enough to witness the forgiveness of sins available through
Christ. But we who have been clothed and anointed with the
Spirit don’t need anything else. We can go forth with confident
hope to witness that Christ will keep his promise of eternal life.

CARMELITES MISSIONARIES OF
ST. THERESE OF THE CHILD JESUS
M I S S I O N A R Y
COOPERATION PLAN
Carmelites missionaries of
St. Therese of The Child
Jesus are called by a loving
God to live and share the
Gospel of Jesus. We
participate in evangelization by missionary presence,
living and proclaiming the Gospel and working with the
poor and marginalized in the spirit and apostolic zeal of
St. Therese. We are the love in the church and, we are
bonds of communion among diverse cultures and races
as reconcilers, healers and promoters of justice. Now we
in the need of asking you to be part of our missionary
pastoral ministry. We need to ask you for your fervent
prayers and you financial support. We are in the need of
building a Pastoral Center House in the town of Olintla,
Puebla Mexico, which is located in the northern part of
Puebla’s Mountain Range. This will be: a house where
native children will receive their catechism; a retreat
house for everybody who needs it; a house where the
poorest of the poor will receive elementary medical
service; a house where the illiterate will receive the
elementary classes to continue with their education; in
short, a humanitarian house where you and us will do our
best to continue dignifying God’s creation.
