TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Many Catholics who are not active in the Church will still seek out ashes this Wednesday. Likewise, many Jews
who are not otherwise observant will follow the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, with great
exactness, fasting and refraining from work and entertainment. People customarily dress in
white as a symbol of purity and a reminder of God’s promise that our sins will be made white
as snow. While the overture to Ash Wednesday for Christians may be a festive Mardi Gras
celebration, for Jews it is the New Year feast of Rosh Hashanah. Ten days before the Day of
Atonement to God, people are expected to repair breaks in human life. These are days for
offering forgiveness and seeking to repair harmed relationships with family, friends, or
coworkers. Everyone is expected to seek out someone and “clear the air” by asking for
understanding for any mean words or thoughtless deeds in the past year.
Perhaps the ashes you receive will be invested with deeper meaning if you follow a
similar plan. This year, Rosh Hashanah will be September 5, and Yom Kippur September 14. A conversation with some
Jewish friends or neighbors about their experience of a season of repentance may be a blessing on your Lent.

On January 25, 2013, Most Rev. Armando Ochoa, Bishop of the
Roman Catholic Diocese of Fresno, met with the Superintendent
of Catholic Schools, President of the Diocesan Board of
Education, and Diocesan CFO, Sacred Heart School’s principal,
pastor, and the school’s Board President, to announce his decision
to close the school in June, at the conclusion of this 2012-2013
school year.
“Since I believe in a Catholic education for all Catholic children, it
is personally for me a very difficult decision to close a school,”
said Bishop Ochoa. At this meeting, the Bishop also said, “I
received a clear statement from my Diocesan Board of Education Sacred Heart School is not able to meet its cost overhead with its
current low enrollment.” This problem started many years ago
when the state constructed highways 180 and 168. To build these
freeways, hundreds of homes were destroyed in the school’s
neighborhood and one half of the school’s neighbors were forced
to sell their homes and move away from the area.
“I love this school, its outstanding teachers, its great students, its
generous parents, and its wonderful Christian culture of helping
each other,” said Sr. Kathleen Drilling, the school principal. “We
have done our best to reach the financial and enrollment
benchmarks required by the Diocese. At this time in our long
history of solving problems, we have clearly identified a number
interrelated problems that we were unable to resolve within the
required deadline.”

POINT IN TIME SURVEY OF HOMELESS
On September 19, 2012 Fresno County Councilmember Henry Perea and several people from various county
departments and from the Fresno Housing Authority met with the Summit Conference on Homelessness for Fresno’s
religious leaders to discuss how members of the faith community can help the city and county solve the problem of
homelessness.
One need was for 150 volunteers to help with the Point In Time Survey which is required by HUD for Fresno and
Madera agencies to get Federal grants to help and house the homeless. To volunteer you must participate in a
mandatory volunteer training session at Poverello House located at 412 F Street, Fresno, on Sunday, February 24,
2:30pm - 6:00pm. Surveyors are needed for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, February 25 - 27, arrive at 5:00am,
surveying is 5:30am– 9:00am: Teams of 4 - 5people will take to the streets to survey Fresno and Madera’s Homeless. We
kindly ask that volunteers commit to participating on all three mornings if possible. To sign up as a volunteer, contact:

resucitado. Se nos recuerda del poder salvador del Evangelio y sabemos de corazón
que, como escribió San Pablo, creer en otra cosa no nos llevará a ningún lado.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
Cuando era niño mi padre me
llevaba al rancho de mi abuelito en
México. En una de esas visitas mi
abuelo y mis tíos estaban quemando
la tierra en su rancho. Mientras el
fuego ardía, papa Manuel nos
explicaba que era necesario reducir todo en cenizas para
que la tierra recobrara sus fuerzas y quedará más fértil.
Sin saberlo, mi abuelo me dio la imagen que hasta hoy
sostiene mi concepto del Miércoles de Cenizas y de la
cuaresma. El Miércoles de Cenizas es la fiesta cristiana
que por lo menos doce siglos ha señalado el comienzo de
la Cuaresma. No cabe duda que para los Latinos este día
es de particular atracción. Es uno de los pocos días del
año litúrgico en cual llegamos al templo en masa por tal
de recibir las cenizas en la frente. Nosotros somos un
pueblo enraizado en la tierra y sabemos que la tierra
necesita quemarse de vez en cuando para seguir
produciendo. Nosotros como la tierra necesitamos
dominarnos y cultivarnos para producir frutos y flores

SMUDGED WITH ASHES, SMEARED WITH OIL
On a somber Wednesday we will gather to smudge every forehead with ashes, admonishing each other to
remember that dust returns to dust and that the only way through death to life is Christ. The ashes are made by burning
palms—given to us on Passion Sunday a year ago with the invitation to “go forth in peace, praising Jesus our Messiah,
as did the crowds that welcomed him into Jerusalem.” Our baptismal life is a lifelong pilgrimage with Christ toward
Jerusalem. Yet like our best intentions, last year’s palm branches now have become dried and
brittle—fodder for the fire. So our pilgrimage leads us to Lent. And a hostile climate of sin and
suffering necessitates drastic measures: We are marked with ashes as a sign of our willingness to
pray, fast and give alms.
But this gritty smudge that we accept on our foreheads is not a death sentence. It is not the mark of
Cain. A reminder of our fragile mortality, it is nonetheless shaped in the great sign of salvation: The
ashes form a cross, a thumb-printed cross that marks the same heads that were smeared with
chrism at baptism. Anointed with that royal oil, we are committed to conversion, to continually
setting out for the new Jerusalem, to leaving behind forever our captivity in Egypt.
This gritty ashen sign reminds us that on the way there is soil and toil, sweat and hard work before
we come to the oasis in this desert—the Easter bath of baptism. At the font, on a damp and chilly night, water will wash
away soil and oil will soothe away toil to make new Christians royal: heirs of the reign of God. The dusty smudges will be
gone, and in the light of the paschal candle the oily heads of the newly baptized will shine like the moon and the stars,

The Catholic Church no longer officially honors St. Valentine,
but the holiday has both Roman and Catholic roots.
THE ORIGINS OF ST. VALENTINE’S DAY
A quick quiz: St. Valentine was:
a) a priest in the Roman Empire who helped persecuted Christians
during the reign of Claudius II, was thrown in jail and later beheaded on
Feb. 14.
b) a Catholic bishop of Terni who was beheaded, also during the reign of
Claudius II.
c) someone who secretly married couples when marriage was forbidden,
or suffered in Africa, or wrote letters to his jailer's daughter, and was
probably beheaded.
d) all, some, or possibly none of the above.
If you guessed d), give yourself a box of chocolates. Although the midFebruary holiday celebrating love and lovers remains wildly popular, the
confusion over its origins led the Catholic Church, in 1969, to
drop St. Valentine's Day from the Roman calendar of official,
worldwide Catholic feasts. (Those highly sought-after days
are reserved for saints with more clear historical record.
After all, the saints are real individuals for us to imitate.)
Some parishes, however, observe the feast of St. Valentine.
The roots of St. Valentine's Day lie in the ancient Roman
festival of Lupercalia, which was celebrated on Feb. 15. For 800 years the
Romans had dedicated this day to the god Lupercus. On Lupercalia, a young
man would draw the name of a young woman in a lottery and would then
keep the woman as a sexual companion for the year.
Pope Gelasius I was, understandably, less than thrilled with this custom.
So he changed the lottery to have both young men and women draw the
names of saints whom they would then emulate for the year (a change that no
doubt disappointed a few young men). Instead of Lupercus, the patron of the
feast became Valentine. For Roman men, the day continued to be an occasion
to seek the affections of women, and it became a tradition to give out
handwritten messages of admiration that included Valentine's name.
There was also a conventional belief in Europe during the Middle Ages
that birds chose their partners in the middle of February. Thus the day was
dedicated to love, and people observed it by writing love letters and sending
small gifts to their beloved. Legend has it that Charles, duke of Orleans, sent
the first real Valentine card to his wife in 1415, when he was imprisoned in the
Tower of London. (He, however, was not beheaded, and died a half-century
later of old age.)
