Community Meeting

Welcome
Dr. Winbush welcomed everyone to the first community meeting. Attendees were assured that
everyone has a voice and can ask questions, but were cautioned that we are not here to attack
each other. We must remain respectful and professional. Planning team members were asked
to stand so that everyone could see who they were. Members of the planning team should be
sharing information with others. There is room for more parents and teachers on the team. The
planning team will vote next week whether to allow new members at this point. If you are
interested, speak with your principal.
Presentation
Background information and school data were presented by Dr. Winbush including enrollment
data for several years and the current number of classes and teachers at each grade level in
each school.
The planning team has met twice. At the first meeting, meeting norms were established and a
mission statement was created by the team. Team members agreed that the focus must be on
what is best for our children. The second meeting allowed team members to review and discuss
the information and data they had requested and to ask questions.
Dr. Winbush explained that each two meetings of the planning team will be followed by a
community meeting that all parents and other stakeholders may attend. The work of the
planning team will be shared at the community meetings. Our work needs to be completed and
a recommendation submitted by the end of November.
Next steps will be to begin to discuss options. The team members will review all the
information, and district folks may be brought to the team meetings as needed (ex: facilities
people). The team will develop options that will then be brought back to this group.
Questions/Discussion
 So, there are no options to discuss right now?
No. We just wanted to be sure you are made aware of the work of the planning team
thus far. No decisions have been made. In our discussion, the following possibilities
were mentioned, but have not been presented as options yet:
1. Reorganize Lambs and Hunley Park to make one a K-4 and one a 5-8 school.
2. Reorganize Lambs and Hunley Park to make one a primary and one an elementary
school.
No decisions were made. The purpose of this planning team is to explore options and
make a recommendation.
 Are you looking at any research showing any benefits of having 5 th graders attend school
with 8th graders?
Yes. There are many schools that are configured this way. There may be a
misunderstanding about how it works. In this scenario, if we went that way, there would















be two 5th grade teachers who would share students. The teachers would move, not the
students. The middle school students would change classes like a regular middle school.
So 5th grade would be separate?
They would be in the same building but would not go to lunch at the same time or be in
transition at the same time. Currently, Military Magnet and Baptist Hill both have
middle and high school students, but they are kept separate.
What information do you have about the Hunley Park area?
It was slated to be demolished in 2015. It is going away, but there is some question
about when that will happen.
If we go with one primary and one elementary, would the times be staggered?
That would be one of the things the team would have to consider for each of the
options they come up with.
Goodwin and Zucker are not a part of this right now, but they could be at some point?
Goodwin is not affected, but Zucker may be if we go with a CD-4 and a 5-8 option.
Is it already decided that this school will be the one with the younger kids?
No. That has not been decided at all.
When will decisions be made?
We will begin discussing options at our next meeting. People who are on the planning
team should bring that information to you.
Would the changes go into effect next year?
Yes. That is what we are shooting for. The team could possibly vote not to change a
thing.
Can you tell me what benefit this would have for my children?
The team has not discussed that yet. All of that will be discussed as we explore options
and the pros and cons of each one.
Is this all happening because the District wanted to save money?
No. This did not come from the District. It came from some of the stakeholders.
Could this possibly bring more funding to the schools?
The number of students drives the program.
There would be no 7th and 8th grade next year?
No. The middle grades would be added one per year. Next year we would add only
grade 6.
How does it affect overcrowding?
Principals have to make decisions about how to use their Title I money. It can be used to
buy additional teachers.
When will the vote to add new members to the planning team happen?
We will decide at the next planning team meeting.
How was this committee chosen?
There are requirements for the makeup of the team – PTA, parents, teachers, etc. The
list was sent to principals and it was up to the principals to fill those slots. If you want to
be on the team, let your principal know.
If we are not happy with the results, what are our options for finding another school?





There is a transfer process, but it would need to be approved and you would have to
provide transportation.
Will construction and/or renovations be completed by next year?
It will depend on what is decided.
Will construction costs take away from funding for the schools?
No. It is a different pot of money.
Will teachers move over?
That will depend on which options are presented and what is decided.
How will it be decided which school will be which?
That will be up to the planning team to decide based on all the information.
There is a lot of “he said, she said” out there about all of this.
There are some rumors, but there are two things you can count on:
1. No school will close
2. No teacher will be out of a job
The next planning team meeting is October 22.
The next community meeting is November 6.

Presentación
Información de antecedentes y datos de la escuela fueron presentados por Dr. Winbush
incluyendo datos de inscripción durante varios años, números de clases actuales y profesores

presenten.
¿Goodwin and Zucker are no son parte de esto ahora, pero podrían ser en algún
momento?
A Goodwin no les afecta, a Zucker puede que sí, si se decide por la opción de CD-4 y 5-8.







Hay requisitos para hacer el equipo – PTA, padres, profesoras, etc. Las lista fue enviada
a las directoras hicieron las listas. Si le gustaría ser parte del equipo, déjele saber a su
directora.
¿Si no estamos satisfechos con los resultados, cuáles son nuestras opciones para buscar
otra escuela?
Hay un proceso de traslado, pero debe ser aprobado y usted será responsable por el
transporte.
¿La construcción/ o renovaciones estará terminadas para el próximo ano?
Depende de lo que se decida.
¿El costo de construcción nos quitara fondos de las escuelas?
No. Ese dinero viene de otros fondos.
Las profesoras se moverán?
Eso depende de las opciones que se presenten y lo que se decida.
¿Cómo será decidido cual escuela será cual?
Sera en lo que el equipo de planificación decida basado en la información.
Hay mucho de “el dijo, ella dijo” sobre todo esto.
Hay muchos rumores, pero hay dos cosas que debes estar seguro:
3. Ninguna escuela se cerrara.
4. Ninguna profesora se quedara sin trabajo.
La próxima junta de planificación será el 22 de Octubre.
La próxima junta de la comunidad será el 6 de Noviembre.
