Planning Team Meeting

Feedback and questions
Dr. Winbush asked the team to share any feedback or questions they had received from
colleagues, parents, or others.
 A District 4 Capital Programs Master Plan, obtained from CCSD’s website, was brought
up by a team member. In the section Recommended Phase IV Building Program
Projects, the document includes: 4-9: Lambs Elementary School — Demolish the annex
and rebuild a classroom wing to support exploratory classrooms to convert Lambs to a 5
-8 campus. Team members expressed concerns that this was a decision that has already
been made.
Dr. Winbush assured the team that no decision has been made. The items in the master
plan were items for discussion, but were not definite plans. At the Board workshop
where that information was discussed, two options were presented for discussion:
1. Reorganize Lambs and Hunley Park to make one a K-4 and one a 5-8 school.
2. Reorganize Lambs and Hunley Park to make one a primary and one an elementary
school.
No decisions were made. The purpose of this planning team is to explore options and
make a recommendation.
 If the schools change, will people have to re-apply for jobs?
Those decisions will be made by the administration. No one will be without a job. If you
don’t want to remain at one of these 2 schools, you may go out on your own and look
for a job elsewhere. If you want to stay in the IZLC, we will help you find one within our
learning community.
 Are we guaranteed a job within these 2 schools?
No. It will depend on the numbers. You won’t lose your job as a CCSD employee, but you
may lose your comfort zone.
 How would you determine who stays?
It could be based on seniority. HR would be involved.
 What would the timeline be? When would teachers know?
Teachers should know by March for sure.
 The PTA usually votes on the new board members well before the end of the school
year. How will that be affected?
They will have to adjust or perhaps re-vote. We will give them the information as soon
as possible
 There was an article in Sunday’s paper about literacy rates at Zucker. How does that
impact this?
It will affect Zucker, Northwoods, several schools.
 Changing the grade configuration to one K-2 school and one 3-5 school would not serve
the purpose we are trying to accomplish, would it?



That is a decision you (this team) will have to make. Military Magnet has grades 6 – 12
and it works well for them. The longer they stay, the better they get.
What about a K-8 school then, so that students would stay at the same school for
several years?
You can make that recommendation, but it is not likely that we can afford two K-8
schools.
How are transfers affected?
When a child starts at a school, they stay until they get through the last grade level at
the school, then they go through the transfer process. This is slightly different. For
example, if this school became grades K-2 and the other school became 3-5, and your
second grader was here, he would automatically go to the other school.
If a 5-8 school is adopted, will it become a dumping ground for rougher kids who don’t
want to go to Zucker or Northwoods or get kicked out?
Students would have to apply for a transfer, so the District 4 Board would have some
control over that. They are the gatekeepers.
Work Groups
Dr. Winbush provided the data that had been requested at the last meeting: CROP data,
capacity, size, site maps, attendance zones, etc. Groups were instructed to review the data and
consider both buildings, keeping in mind that if we decided to add middle grades, we would
begin by adding grade six and add a grade each year and that middle school would need space
for P.E. Middle school attendance lines would need to be re-drawn, so it would affect Zucker
and Northwoods. If we wanted to help alleviate some of the overcrowding in the Pinehurst
area, we may want to look at extending that way.
Table groups were given time to look over and discuss all the information provided. Given the
option of continuing the group discussion or beginning the process of identifying options, the
team decided to use the remaining time for continuation of their discussion.
The next meeting is Tuesday, October 14, at Hunley Park. This will be a community meeting.
Although we don’t have much to share yet, we will make people aware of how this process
works and answer any questions they may have.

 Un Programa Capital de Plan Principal del Distrito 4, obtenido en la página de CCSD, fue mencionada por
un miembro del equipo. En la sección Recommended Phase IV Building Program Projects, el documento

expresaron sus preocupaciones que esto fuera una decisión que ya se había tomado.

 ¿Si las escuelas cambian, la gente tendrá que volver a aplicar por trabajos?
Esa decisión será realizada por la administración. Nadie se quedara sin trabajo. Si usted no se quiere
quedar en ninguna de las escuelas, usted puede salir a buscar en otro lado. Si le gustaría continuar con
IZLC, le ayudaremos a buscar entre la comunidad de aprendizaje.
 ¿Se garantiza un puesto de trabajo en estas 2 escuelas?
No. Depende de los números. No perderá su trabajo como empleado de CCSD, pero podría perder su zona
de comodidad.
 ¿Cómo se determina quién se queda?
Podría estar basado en antigüedad (el tiempo que tiene en su puesto). Recursos Humanos estará
involucrado
 ¿Cuánto tiempo se tomara? ¿Cuando saben los profesores?
Para Marzo los profesores ya deben de saber.
 El PTA por lo general vota por los nuevos miembros del consejo antes del fin del año escolar. ¿Como
afectara eso?
Tendrán que ajustarse o tal vez tendrán que volver a votar. Compartiremos la información lo más pronto
sea posible.
 Había un artículo en el periódico del domingo sobre las tasas de alfabetización en Zucker. ¿Como es que
eso afecta?
Afectara a Zucker, Northwoods, a varias escuelas.
 El cambio de configuración de grado a una escuela de K-2 y otra a grados de 3-5 no cumplirá el propósito
que tratamos de llevar a cabo, ¿cierto?
Esa una decisión que ustedes (este equipo) deben de tomar. Military Magnet tiene grados de 6 a 12 y
funciona muy bien para ellos. Entre más tiempo se quedan, mejor.
Usted puede hacer esa recomendación, pero no creo que sea probable poder tener dos escuelas de K-8.
 ¿Cómo son afectadas las transferencias?
Cuando un niño/a comienza la escuela, se quedan hasta que terminan el último nivel de grado en la
escuela, después pasan por el proceso de transferencia. Es un poco diferente. Por ejemplo, si esta escuela
se convierte en una de grados de k-2 y la otra escuela se convierte una de grados de 3 a 5, y su hijo/a de
segundo grado estuviera aquí, el automáticamente se irá a la otra escuela.
 ¿Si una escuela de 5 a 8 es adoptada, se convertirá en un lugar donde se quedarían los niños más bruscos
que no quieran ir a Zucker o Northwood?
Los estudiantes deben aplicar para ser transferidos, así que el consejo de Distrito 4 tendrá algún control
sobre eso. Ellos son la guardia/porteros.
Work Groups
Dr. Winbush proporciono los datos de la última junta que se había solicitado en la última reunión. : Datos de CROP,

Se les dio tiempo a Los grupos de las mesas para repasar y hablar sobre la información proporcionada. Se les dio l
adopción de continuar la discusión en grupo o comenzar el proceso de identificar las opciones, el equipo decidió
utilizar el tiempo restante para la continuación de la discusión.
La próxima reunión es el martes 14 de Octubre en Hunley Park. Esto será una junta de la comunidad aunque no
tenemos mucho que compartir, le dejaremos saber a la gente como este proceso funciona y contestaremos
cualquier pregunta que tengan.
