Welcome to the Parish Community of Sacred Heart Church illustration by Sheri George 1 6 2 7 G R A N D AV E N U E • W E S T D E S M O I N E S , I O WA 5 0 2 6 5 FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK This Sunday we celebrate the end of the Easter season with our celebration of Pentecost. Our celebration of Pentecost reflects the Jewish feast of Pentecost, which took place 50 days after the Passover and which celebrated the sealing of the covenant on Mount Sinai. On the first Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, they were given the gifts of the Holy Spirit. What Are the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit? The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude (or courage), knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. Those gifts helped the apostles to fulfill their mission to preach the Gospel to all nations. We too are given these gifts and we receive these gifts in Baptism and Confirmation. How do know that we have received these gifts of the Holy Spirit? The gifts of the Holy Spirit are made manifest in our lives in the fruits of the Holy Spirit. The fruits of the Holy Spirit are seen in how we live out our daily lives. What Are the Twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit? The twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit are charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, and chastity. On this Pentecost Sunday may we be open to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit into our lives so that we can receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit and live in our daily lives the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Come Holy Spirit Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. In the Spirit and fire of God’s LOVE, MAY 15, 2016 ● PENTECOST WELCOME Welcome to all our visitors, newcomers and parishioners!! When you donate, you help bridge the affordability gap for children and families who want a Catholic education but need tuition assistance. Your generous gift becomes eligible for an Iowa state tax credit AND federal tax savings, and is one of the most tax-efficient ways to leverage your charitable giving. Every family that meets the income guidelines is guaranteed tuition assistance, based on their financial need.
