attend a Pre-Jordan meeting prior to baptism, which is arranged
at a mutually convenient time.

Dear Parishioners,
A newspaper man by the
name of Jim Bishop wrote a
short article about Jesus Christ
and the Christmas season
entitled “One Solitary Life,” which I think
encapsulates everything that we celebrate during this
holy season.
One Solitary Life
He was born in an obscure village, the child of
a peasant woman. He grew up in another obscure
village, where he worked in a carpenter shop until he
was 30. And then for three years he was an itinerant
preacher. He never had a family or owned a home.
He never set foot inside a big city. He never traveled
200 miles from the place where he was born. He
never wrote a book, or held public office. In fact, he
did none of the things that usually accompany
greatness. While he was still a young man, the tide of
popular opinion turned against him. His friends
deserted him. He was turned over to his enemies, and
went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed to
a cross between two thieves. While he was dying, his
executioners gambled for the only piece of property
he had - his cloak. When he was dead, he was taken
down and laid in a borrowed grave. 2,000 years have
come and gone, and today He is the central figure for
much of the human race. All the armies that have
ever marched, and all of the navies that have ever
sailed, and all of the parliaments that have ever sat,
and all of the kings that have ever reigned, put
together, have not affected the life of mankind upon
this earth as powerfully … as this “One Solitary
Life.”

of this holy season!

~Reflection– Jubilee Year of Mercy~
In proclaiming the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope
Francis proclaimed his desire that this Holy Year be
“steeped in mercy,” as we disciples “go out to every man
and woman,” bringing the “balm of mercy” to “believers
and those far away, as a sign that the Kingdom of God is
already present in our midst!” (Misericordiae Vultus, 5).
In her visitation of Elizabeth, Mary beautifully presents
just such an image. Despite the perils of her pregnancy,
not to mention her preoccupations as a young unwed
mother, Mary instantly, unselfishly, “goes out” of herself,
hastening far and over dangerous terrain, to “bring the
balm of God’s tender mercy” in assistance rendered to
her older relative. Since baptism and the Eucharist have
made us, in a way, bearers of the living Christ within as
Mary was, such selfless “going out” of ourselves to be of
loving service to others in mercy should especially mark
our Christmas season this Jubilee Year.

Queridos Feligreses,
Un periodista de nombre
Jim Bishop escribió un corto
artículo acerca de Jesucristo y de
la época de Navidad titulado
“Una Vida Solitaria,” la cual
encierra todo lo que celebramos
durante esta santa época.
Una Vida Solitaria
El nació en un pueblito obscuro, hijo de una campesina.
El creció en otro pueblito obscuro, donde él trabajó en
un taller de carpintero hasta que cumplió los 30 años. Y
entonces, por tres años él fue un predicador ambulante.
Él nunca tuvo una familia ni fue dueño de una casa. El
nunca visitó una gran ciudad. Él nunca viajó 200 millas
desde el lugar donde nació. El nunca escribió un libro
ni ocupó un cargo público. De hecho él no hizo
ninguna de las cosas que usualmente acompañan la
grandeza. Mientras él era aún un joven, la marea de la
opinión popular se viró contra él. Sus amigos lo
abandonaron. Él fue entregado a sus enemigos, y pasó
por la burla de un juicio. Él fue clavado a una cruz
entre dos ladrones. Mientras él moría, sus verdugos se
echaron a suerte la única posesión que tenía – su manto.
Después de muerto, lo bajaron de la cruz y lo enterraron
en una tumba prestada. 2000 años han llegado y han
pasado, y hoy en día él es la figura central de mucho de
la raza humana. Todos los ejércitos que han marchado y
todas las flotas que han navegado, y todos los
parlamentos que se han reunido, y todos los reyes que
han reinado, puestos todos juntos, no han afectado la
vida del hombre en esta tierra tan poderosamente…
como esta “Una Vida Solitaria.”

~Reflexión–Año Jubilar de la Misericordia~
Al proclamar el Año Jubilar de la Misericordia, el Papa
Francisco exclamó cómo él deseaba que este Año Santo
esté “lleno de misericordia”, nosotros como discípulos
vamos “al encuentro de cada persona llevando la
bondad y la ternura de Dios a todos, creyentes y lejanos,
pueda llegar el bálsamo de la misericordia como signo
del Reino de Dios que está ya presente en medio de
nosotros” (Misericordiae Vultus, 5). Al visitar a Isabel,
María presenta bellamente una imagen así. A pesar de
los riesgos de su embarazo, sin mencionar su
preocupación por ser una mujer joven sin casarse
todavía, María de inmediato, sin egoísmo “sale” de sí
misma y a toda prisa avanza sobre terreno peligroso
para llevar “el bálsamo de la misericordia” de Dios
para ayudar a su pariente. Ya que el Bautismo y la
Eucaristía nos han hecho, de alguna manera, portadores
de un Cristo Vivo dentro de nosotros, así como María
fue, esa generosidad de “salir” de nosotros mismos para
ofrecer un servicio atento de misericordia a nuestros
prójimos, debe marcar especialmente nuestro Tiempo de
Navidad este Año Jubilar.
