A Message from the Principal…
Happy Spring! We have enjoyed a wonderful year together, and it’s hard to believe it is coming to an
end. We are already making plans for next school year, excited about new ideas and new opportunities
for our students. March flew by, twirling with busy students and staff fully engaged in project-based
learning activities that amazed me. Students painted under desks, simulating Michelangelo painting the
Sistine Chapel; students participated in debating court cases; students created science projects that were
replicas of displays at the Exploratorium, and more! On top of that, eighth grade students had a very
successful field trip to the Exploratorium, “Cougars in the Wild” camped overnight at Point Reyes,
students participated in “We Day” in Oakland, and several classes took individual field trips. Our two
Odyssey of the Mind teams came in first place in Regional Competition, and went on to compete at the
State level, our wrestling team placed third, and students are participating in track and field and soccer

after school. Our 7 grade field trips to Armstrong’s Woods are scheduled for April 25 and May 2. I want
to thank parents in advance for supporting this trip, as chaperones and worker bees. We do keep our
students busy and we appreciate parent involvement!
This year has been a year of many changes, and they are all great changes. We are inspired and it is
so very exciting. We are all learning more and more about Common Core, preparing students for college
and career readiness. We have embraced Restorative Practices, helping students develop empathy for
others and to make amends for inappropriate behaviors in ways that teach them lifelong lessons. There
is good news on the horizon regarding school budget improvements, so we are counting our blessings
and looking forward to better times ahead. State testing will also be different this year. There will no
longer be “bubble in the one and only correct answer” multiple choice test. This year all students will be
participating in a field test of the Smarter Balanced Assessments in English and math, which are aligned
with Common Core standards. All students will be taking these tests on computers, here at school. I
encourage you all to go to www.cde.ca.gov to check out the practice tests. Just search Smarter
Balanced practice tests.
In closing, I want to thank everyone for all of your support this year. It has flown by, but it has been
spectacular. We all need to thank SchoolsPlus for their generous donation of $12,000.00 to our school to
support Arts & Athletics. This incredible support makes it possible for us to purchase uniforms,
equipment, and art, music, and drama supplies and materials. I also want to thank our PFSO for your
amazing contributions and support this year. We plan on keeping students happy, engaged, and learning
until the last minute of school, so please continue to stay informed and involved. It’s truly been a
wonderful year.

Feliz primavera! Hemos disfrutado de un maravilloso año juntos, y es difícil de creer que está
llegando a su fin. Ya estamos haciendo planes para el próximo año escolar, entusiasmados con nuevas
ideas y nuevas oportunidades para nuestros estudiantes. Marzo voló rápido, con estudiantes ocupados y
el personal totalmente comprometido en las actividades y proyectos de aprendizaje que me maravilla.
Los estudiantes pintaron debajo de escritorios, simulando a Miguel Ángel pintando la Capilla Sixtina; los
estudiantes participaron en debate sobre casos judiciales; los estudiantes crearon proyectos científicos
de réplicas de exhibiciones del Exploratorium y mucho más! Además de eso, los estudiantes del octavo
grado tuvieron una exitosa excursión al Exploratorium, "Pumas en la naturaleza" acamparon durante la
noche en Point Reyes, los estudiantes participaron en "el dia de WE" en Oakland y varias clases llevaron
tuvieron viajes individuales. Nuestro equipo de Odisea de la mente llegó en primer lugar en la
competencia Regional y pasó a competir a nivel estatal, nuestro equipo de lucha colocado en tercer
lugar, y los estudiantes participan en atletismo y fútbol después de la escuela. Nuestras salidas de
campo del grado séptimo al bosque de Armstrong están programadas para el 25 de abril y 2 de mayo.
Quiero dar las gracias a los padres por adelantado por apoyar a este viaje, como acompañantes y
trabajadores. Mantenemos nuestros estudiantes ocupados y agradecemos la participación de los padres.
Este año ha sido un año de muchos cambios, y son todos grandes desafíos. Nos inspiramos y es
muy emocionante. Todos estamos aprendiendo más acerca de núcleo común, preparando a los
estudiantes para la Universidad y carrera de la preparación. Hemos adoptado prácticas restaurativas,

As we enter the last quarter of the school year, it is
important to review our expectations of our students. It
is our goal that all our students are safe, responsible and
successful here at Santa Rosa Middle School. Students
need to stay focused on the goal of ending the year
successfully and passing to the next grade.

examinar nuestras expectativas de nuestros estudiantes.

Students and parents should take some time to review
the school rules. With the warm weather coming,
students should review the dress code to know what is
allowed here at school. Also, all electronic devices need
to stay out of sight until after school. Our school rules
are in effect before, during and after school. With the
end of the school year many special activities are
scheduled. Students and parents should review our Loss
of Privileges section in the planner. We want all of our
students to be able to enjoy the end of year activities at
Santa Rosa Middle School.
The California Standards Test will take place April 7th
through the 25th. This year will be different. 8th Grade
will take a Science Test. All the other students will
participate in a Field Test for the new Smarter Balanced
Assessment. This is a practice for the new computer test
and no scores will be published this year. For more

Los estudiantes y los padres deberían tomar algún tiempo
para examinar las reglas escolares. Con la llegada del
tiempo caliente, los estudiantes deberían examinar el

Santa Rosa Middle School Prepares for Emergencies
Santa Rosa Middle School has a plan in place to deal with a variety of emergencies. We work with local emergency agencies including
Santa Rosa Police to evaluate and update our emergency plans. It is very important that each student’s Emergency Card is kept up to
date with so that we may know to whom we may release your child in case of emergency. Our Student Release area is at the gate on 5th
street on the south side of the campus between rooms 67 and 68.
Please plan to pick up your student ONLY from the 5 th St. gate. In order for our staff to maintain records of who has been picked up, we
must not have any student taken from the campus except from that gate. We are trying to avoid a chaotic exodus from the site.
In the event of a major emergency, there are things you can do to help us to be prepared. Talk with your child about who is on the
Emergency Card you have turned in to the office. Tell your child to wait for the Student Release process to take place and follow the
directions of the staff at school. You and your child will feel more secure knowing students will be kept safely at school until a parent or
designated person is able to pick them up.

está en el tarjeta de emergencia que se han convertido en la oficina. Dígale a su hijo/hija que se espere hasta que el proceso de Entrega

or damage any school property.
6. Gum chewing is not allowed on campus.
7. Permanent markers are not allowed.
8. Inappropriate behavior, writing, or pictures is

9. Honesty is expected. No cheating, plagiarism,
or collusion will be tolerated*
10. No harassment of any kind will be tolerated.
This includes bullying, sexual harassment,
and any unwelcome aggressive behavior.

Counseling Corner
Time to stand for the Seventh Inning Stretch!
The school year is almost complete. For some,
it’s been a year of success: Academic, social and
emotional. For others, it’s been a year of ups and downs,
trials and tribulations. The third quarter grades will be
mailed home on March 19th, so keep an eye out for them.
As always, if you do not receive grades for your students,
please contact the counseling office immediately.
It is not too late to become involved in your student’s
academic life. We encourage you to not only speak daily to
your child, but to have regular dialogues with your
student’s teachers by either voice mail, email, daily or
weekly progress reports, or the use of the agenda. If you
choose email, use the first initial of the teacher’s first name,
last name, and then @srcs.k12.ca.us. Although we all love
to trust our student’s word, don’t lose sight of the fact that
they are teenagers. If you need assistance putting a plan
together, we encourage you to seek our services.
Agendas
Every student at SRMS received an agenda at the
beginning of the school year. The agenda should
be used every day to write down daily
assignments in all classes. Parents can check
this agenda nightly to make sure the
assignments are being written down and can check the
work their students have done. If you are concerned that the
assignments are not being written down, you can ask you
student to have each teacher initial the agenda daily. This
way the teacher can check for accuracy and open a dialogue
with the student.
New State Testing Ahead
SRMS will be administering State Testing
from April 8 – 30th. The subject will be
Science and the only students affected will be 8th
graders. Students’ schedules will be slightly modified on
April 8 and 9 to accommodate the testing
system of academic tests that will replace the Standardized
Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program tests in English–
Language Arts and Math beginning in the 2014–15 school
year. The Smarter Balanced tests are based on the Common
Core State Standards adopted by California in August,
2010.
The Smarter Balanced tests will generally be taken on
computers, and the Practice Tests provide a good idea of
what the new tests will look like. The Practice Tests are
available for everyone to use at
http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/practicetest.asp. There is a
Practice Test for each of grades 3 through 8 and grade 11 in
both English–Language Arts and Math. Each Practice
Test has about 30 questions, as well as an answer key.
We encourage parents to explore the Practice Tests with
your child and discuss them with each other. Your child
will also be able to use the Practice Tests on our school
computers. The Smarter Balanced Practice Tests will be
available throughout the 2013–14 school year.

The counseling office supplies students with both
daily and weekly progress reports. These reports
give the student and parent a picture of how the
student is doing both academically and behaviorally in
class. We recommend NOT waiting for a six-week grading
report. The use of the Progress Reports also opens dialogue
with the teacher.
Home Access Center
Both parents and students now have access to our Home
Access Center. On this site you can check your student’s
assignments, see report cards and interim progress reports,
check attendance and discipline, and link to teacher’s
emails. Go to www.srcs.k12.ca.us and follow the links to
Home Access Center. If you need help, please feel free to
contact the counseling office at 528-5397.
6th Grade Orientation
Thank you for all the families that joined us for our 6th
Grade Orientation Night. The evening was a huge success.
We were so pleased to see the many prospective parents
and students that night. We am sure that everyone who
attended felt the amazing energy and enthusiasm that
SRMS offers.
Registration for 2014-2015
The counselors are up to their eyeballs scheduling current
7th grade students and the incoming 6th grade students.
Now that each student has submitted their requests for
electives, we will do our best to accommodate those
requests. If your student did not turn in an elective request,
we will do our best to place your child.
Student Change of Address, Phone Number/email
If you are in the process of moving, or have recently
moved, or if you have a new phone number or
email address, please call Sheila in the
Counseling Office, 528-5397 as soon as
possible. In case of an emergency, it is vitally
important that we know how to contact
parents. We know that you want to stay informed of
your student’s education and we rely on the mail and
phone system to communicate with you.
Orientation and Opening Dates
The start date for next year is August 20, 2014. We will
have Orientation for Incoming 7th Graders on August
18, 2014 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Also on that date,
both new and returning 8th graders can pick up their
schedules from 1:00 PM-3:00 PM. We’re looking forward
to another great year at SRMS!

Más Equilibrada se basa sobre los estándares del estado
núcleo común adoptado por California en agosto de 2010.
Generalmente se tomarán las pruebas Más Equilibrado en

Santa Rosa High School Athletics
Santa Rosa Middle School Families, Santa Rosa High School
would like to invite your child to participate in Athletics while
attending SRHS, next year. On Friday, May 9th at lunch time, SRHS Athletic Coaches
(Fall, Winter, and Spring) will be on campus to discuss and answer questions about
their school athletic teams. At this point, as well, the students will be given coaches
contact information. This information will be necessary, especially for Fall Coaches since
practice opportunities often happen over the summer and before the first day of school.
Eligibility to play high school sports is determined by the gpa earned in the last
grading period. For athletes who want to play a Fall Sport, the grades point average
we use to calculate eligibility is the semester gpa from SRMS (that is the semester
they are currently enrolled in.) The gpa needs to be a 2.0.
Every Prospective athlete is also required to complete a SRCS Athletic Packet. The updated
packets are available at SRHS by Mid May, June, and August 1st. Our offices are closed for the
month of July. This Athletic Packet includes the need of the prospective athlete to have a
sports physical dated after June 1st, 2014. The Athletic Packets are also downloadable after
May 25th online at SRHS website: www.santarosahighschool.net (athletics).
The Athletic Packet must be completed and cleared by the Athletic Directors 2
business days prior to the first day of practice for an athlete to try out.

Santa Rosa High School Athletics
Las familias de Santa Rosa Middle School, le gustaría invitar a tu

We are now well into the final quarter of
the year. Soon we will be doing locker
cleanouts and getting ready for our final
exams. Right now it is crucial that we stay focused on
learning.
Last semester we had our first Dickens Fair. It was such a
success that there was standing room only in the Cougar’s
Den! We are already planning for another, even better
Dickens Fair next year. Students not only did research and
wrote about the era, but also dressed and acted out
scenes.
Most seventh graders have just finished Catherine, Called
Birdy and doing persuasive writing. They are being taught
how to do argumentation using evidence. Others are doing
compare and contrast essays as they compare life in the
novel to life from primary sources. Next they are moving on
to a two week unit on figurative language and poetry to go
along with the Renaissance. Others have done a medieval
magazine project and are now doing a short story unit to
accompany Mesoamerica they just studied in history.
The next big event is the new test that is replacing the
STAR Test. This test is called the SBAC for short, or
Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium. What’s
happening? It’s called “Common Core.”
Almost every state across the nation has
been working together to adopt common
standards for every grade level. Our goal is
to prepare our children for the 21st century;
this involves making needed shifts in teaching. For
instance, with our technological revolution, there is more
emphasis on teaching and using technology in the
classroom. We are also adding more focus on reading for
informational literacy.
Open communication is crucial, so we ask your help. There
are multiple ways to contact us. Email is usually the
quickest way. Most of us use the Homework Hotline and
E-SchoolsPlus. Some teachers even have their own
websites. Messages for us can also be left at the office.

7 Grade French class is continuing to learn
French vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation
and culture. We learned all about Mardi Gras,
and we were even able to have parents come in
and cook crepes for us; which the students LOVED
topping and eating! We have reviewed how to tell time,
say the date, and describe the weather. We have begun
learning regular –ER verb conjugations, which are a
great challenge to language learning. We have also
learned the irregular French verb être which means to
be. We have continued to enjoy taking our monthly field
trips to local cafés. In March we went to Holy Roast
Café, in April we will go to Arrigoni’s, and in May we will
go to Starbucks. The students enjoy ordering food and
drinks of their choice and these fun trips help us to
experience French food and café culture.

8 Grade French class got to learn all about Mardi
Gras and we even were able to have parents come in
and cook crepes for us; which the students LOVED
topping and eating! We have been improving our
writing in French, and are now able to write paragraphs
describing ourselves, our families, our interests, our
opinions, etc. We read these paragraphs aloud in class to
practice our French speaking and pronunciation skills. We
watched some commercials that are shown in France and
then we wrote our own commercials in French and
performed them for the class. Some groups filmed theirs so
they could edit them and students had a lot of fun writing
them, as well as performing them. We have also been
learning about the beautiful city of Paris, with its
monuments, museums, and cafes, and hopefully all of our
SRMS French students will someday get the opportunity to
visit this beautiful and amazing city! We have also
continued to enjoy taking our monthly field trips to local
cafés In March we went to Holy Roast Café, in April we will
go to Arrigoni’s, and in May we will go to Starbucks. The
students enjoy ordering food and drinks of their choice and
these fun trips help us to experience French food and café

On March 7th, the 7th grade
science students toured the 8th grade science classes
and the physical science students demonstrated their
Exploratorium Projects. The 8th grade field trip to the
new Exploratorium on Wednesday, March 5th, was a great
learning experience for students. Thank you to all the
parents and faculty who helped to make this amazing day
possible.
The 8th grade science students will be STAR testing in
Science, Part I and Part II, on Tuesday, April 8th, and
Wednesday April 9th during an extended 1st period. Talk
to your student and encourage them to do their best.
Students should get plenty of rest, along with a good
breakfast and snack. All students should bring a water
bottle with them the day of testing.
Our annual 7th grade educational field trip to
Armstrong Woods is scheduled for Friday,
April 25th and Friday, May 2nd. Students will
spend the day touring the State Park and
exploring our local temperate rainforest
within the context of History, Language Arts,
Mathematics, Physical Education, Art and, of course,
Science. The day will end with a Bar BQ lunch at the
picnic grounds before heading back to campus.
Permission slips will arrive home with your student during
the first and second week of April. Adult chaperones will
be necessary to help make the day successful, safe and
possible. Consider spending the day with SRMS students
and teachers among the towering redwoods and the
banana slugs!
Also in May, our 7th grade will begin the study of Sex
Education. Letters explaining the curriculum and
permission slips to be signed will be sent home with your
student the last week in April. The curriculum will be
available for review in the SRMS library.
Parent/Guardian permission is required for students to
participate in Sex Education classes.
Cougars in the Wild are on the prowl again this Spring.
Cougars will be backpacking and camping for 2 nights at
Coast Camp in Pt. Reyes on April 11th through
April 13th. The annual service project weekend
at Angel Island will take place on May 9th,
10th and 11th. Additional information will be
provided to students during morning announcements and
at lunch time meetings TBA. Please. Feel free to contact

It’s hard to believe that we
have completed the third
quarter. Perhaps time is
speeding by because we have
all kept so busy in the history department. Throughout the second
half of the quarter, seventh graders have been studying Medieval
and Early Modern Europe. When they return from
their Spring Break, students will be starting their
study of The Maya, Aztecs and Incas. Seventh grade
classes have been studying and learning about
Medieval Europe by comparing and contrasting
primary source documents about the Crusades, and they’re also
using other primary source documents in order to create and act
out skits about Medieval life. In other seventh grade classes,
students are demonstrating their understanding about Medieval
life by participating in a magazine project that reports on the key
people and events from the time. Another challenging project
includes creating intricate castles that demonstrate the various
purposes for these fortresses. Seventh graders are also
participating in a Renaissance ball, where they learn about and
take on the persona of key scientific and political figures from
this time, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Elizabeth I and Nicolaus
Copernicus. This hands-on activity gives students a personal
experience and intimate view of many key Renaissance people.
In the eighth grade we are analyzing the challenges being faced
by a young country. Also, students are learning about early
foreign policy and the development of political parties. Key
questions include: What problems faced the new nation? How
were they solved? What were the long-term consequences?
Students began by studying the early presidencies and the key
principles and philosophies that shaped a young nation. As an
example, two key political figures, Alexander
Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson, had vastly
different ideas about how the early government
should be run; however, each was instrumental in
launching our new government and instituting
policies that still influence our country today. Our Constitution
faced many initial challenges. Students are learning about this
“living and breathing” document. They are holding mock
sessions of the Supreme Court where, after researching and
analyzing key trials, they are arguing real-life cases. Their
challenge is to convince the court of the constitutional validity of
their case. As their classmates write opinions and decide the case,
they are practicing the idea of Judicial Review growing out of
Marbury v. Madison in 1803. Other key legislation and events
we are studying include The Whiskey Rebellion, The Embargo
Act, The XYZ Affair, The Louisiana Purchase and the War of
1812.

porque todos nos mantenemos muy ocupados
en el Departamento de historia. Durante la
segunda mitad del cuarto, el séptimo grado han
estado estudiando Medieval y la Europa moderna temprana.
Cuando regresan de sus vacaciones de primavera, los
estudiantes comenzarán su estudio de los mayas, aztecas e
Incas. Clases del séptima grado han estudiado y aprendiendo
sobre la Europa Medieval comparando y el contrastar de los

We are now in the 4th quarter here at
SRMS. It is really hard to believe the year
has gone this fast. All the PE classes are
gearing up for the State Physical Fitness
Testing in April, so encourage your son or
daughter to do their best. The 7th grade
classes have Badminton, Golf, and Volleytennis,
and the 8th grade classes have Softball/Overthe-Line, and Field Games. As the weather
heats up, remember, we still have plenty of PE
shorts left, for only $10. If your son/daughter
needs a pair, have them see their PE teacher. If
you need to talk to your son/daughter’s PE
teacher, the Boys Office is 528-5052, you will
reach Mr. Kiech or Mr. Passalacqua, and the
Girls Office is 528-5051, and you can reach Mrs.
Allen or Ms. LaPrath. Remember, in these tough
economic times don’t forget to get out and
exercise to help release some of that stress.

By the time you read this, the paparazzi will
have come and gone, for the 8th graders will
have finished their fashion show. Now that
we can talk about clothes, how can we NOT
have a fashion show! We are also learning to
talk about things in the past for the first
time! We can look behind, look ahead and be
in the moment, in Spanish!
7th grade Spanish classes are learning about
places, such as the mall, the park, etc. We
are also learning the verb “to go” They will
have already presented their Show and Tell
item, as well.
Both classes continue to go to Chelino’s as a
reward. Thanks to parent chaperones and to
Chelino’s!

PFSO News
The PFSO would like to send out a BIG thank you to the P.E. teachers for putting on another extremely
successful Multicultural Week. We help to financially support this week, but all of the credit goes to the
wonderful P.E. teachers we have at SRMS. We also thank all of the students, staff and parent volunteers.
We are looking ahead, and soon we will be reviewing next year’s budget. At our next meeting on
Wednesday, April 2, 6:30 p.m. in the SRMS Library, we will present the budget and slate of officers for
2014-2015. If you would like to run for one of these offices, or nominate someone else, please attend
the meeting. Voting will take place at the final PFSO meeting of the school year, on May 7th.

A word about volunteering…
Please feel free to contact us to talk about the time commitment for some of these positions.
We understand that time is limited for many of us. (That’s why we are co-presidents!) In fact,
most positions don’t take much time. We’ve found that parents who step up to help tend to:
make a new group of friends, get to know the school staff, and share a sense of community
with their children.
We want to thank all of the parents who volunteered at events, and contributed money,
prizes and food items to our school this year. We will miss the parents of 8th graders, as you
“graduate” to high school volunteering! The board extends a special thank you to Lynn
Valentine, our 8th Grade Volunteer Coordinator, Book Fair Co-Chair, and Campus Beautification
coordinator (talk about stepping up to help!); Tracy Appel, who chaired the Renaissance
Committee and shopped for all of the gift cards and prizes, and held celebrations for our high
achievers; and Sarah Prescott, who coordinated emergency supplies for our school. It was a
pleasure to work with you all!

Una palabra sobre el voluntariado…
Por favor no dude en comunicarse con nosotros para hablar sobre el compromiso de tiempo
