Wahluke’s Largest
Graduating Class
Diplomas were awarded to 104 graduates at
Wahluke High School’s 24th annual commencement exercises Friday, June 1st. The class of
2012 comprises the largest graduating class in
the history of the school.
At the time of the ceremony, the class had
earned $330,000 in scholarships. This year’s
co-valedictorians are Keah Murdoch and Miguel
Vivar, and the salutatorian is Jonathon Hopkins.
Ms. Murdoch plans to attend BYU Idaho. Miguel
Vivar and Jonathon Hopkins are headed to Washington State University for their post secondary
education.
Additional honors include five students who
are concurrently earning their Associate of Arts
degree this spring. These dual diploma earners are Jonathan Abarca, Keitra Calaway, Jessica Martinez, Rafael Mendoza and Miguel Vivar. Keah
Murdoch, Jon Hopkins, and Francisco Cuevas are also being recognized
as recipients of the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction’s
Washington State Honors Award. This award is given annually to the top
ten percent of graduates from across the state.

These 10 students worked hard this year to be able to graduate. They,
along with other Sentinel Tech students, passed 188 classes. They have
enjoyed other activities as well, such as carving pumpkins, creating T-shirt
designs, and cooking terrific BBQ’s on Fridays. Graduation is a great
achievement by these students made possible by many hours of hard
work. Congratulations Graduates. Good Job!

year of reconfiguration! I believe like
many, that our biling
al program update and the reconfiguration this year has been a success that will help our students many
years into the future. We still have a
lot of work to do, however thanks to
our dedicated staff they truly took the
district to the next level.
The question we need to ask ourselves now is, “What does Wahluke Version 3.0 look like next year in our classrooms, schools, and district?”

Bilingual Program Update
It was a big year with our Bilingual program update! We have been hearing
stories across the district that students are learning English faster than ever.
This is a result of our dedicated instructional staff and academy personnel’s
intentional focus around language, math and reading.
Remember if your home is primarily a Spanish speaking home please be
sure to have your children take time to practice their English this summer
by speaking with friends and family and/or simply reading a book!
I also want to again thank the voters in Mattawa, Desert Aire, and the surrounding areas for their support of the replacement levy and our students

Communication
Academy Students Making Gains

The Wahluke K-5 Academy had an excellent first year serving 383 students in the three elementary buildings in Reading, Math, and Language
with many students receiving services in more than one of these areas.
More than 500,000 minutes of instruction were provided to students with
the majority of that time being outside of their core Reading and Math
times. Students received intense instruction focused on specific skills
that they were lacking. The majority of students made gains in their areas
of focus and are coming closer to being on grade level. Other students
who continued to struggle were identified for Response to Intervention
(RTI) where they can continue to receive additional small group instruction or were tested for Special Education to see if they have a learning
disability. Academy data helps support classroom teachers as they
make those referrals and identify students for additional services. We
are excited to be adding two new team members this year to expand the
Academy through grade 8 and continue services as students transition
into Wahluke Junior High.
Showcasing Wahluke Staff
We are very proud of all our staff in Wahluke Schools! We like to highlight who we feel have taken the district to the next level! This month we
showcase:
*Ken Strauss for always being a positive, kind person to our Sentinel
Tech students and being active and involved in building positive relationships with kids. Thanks for being an awesome bus driver!
*Junior High Staff – A great thank you and job well done for making
the transition from a 7th - 8th grade junior high school to a 6th- 8th grade
junior high an extremely successful and positive experience. Systems are
in place and the culture is ready to allow for great things to happen! Thank
you – Dale Hedman.
21st Century Summer Programs
The Wahluke 21st Century programs will be offering a variety of activities
this summer for 6th – 12th grade students. Classes will be offered as one
hour blocks and will include rocket building, Lego Robotics, roller coaster
building, soccer, and guitar. The program will be held in the Junior High
School, Monday through Friday from 10:00a.m. to 1:00p.m., June 18th
– July 20th. Lunch will be available. No transportation will be provided.

Walk 4 Diabetes
In the spring of 2011, Wahluke High School’s Walking and Nutrition Class
was given an assignment to create a community event. Teacher Adrea
Bezdicek listed a few possibilities, but after the class did some research on
Grant County and found that diabetes is ranked as the 4th leading cause of
death in the county, the first annual Wahluke Walk for Diabetes was born.
In May of 2011, with matching funds from the Wahluke Family Clinic, the
class was able to raise -$1600.00. This year, 2012, the class of 14 students
did not get matching funds. But they were able to meet their goal of raising
$2000.00 through the support of the community and walkers on the day
of the event. This money will be split evenly between the Wahluke Family Clinic and the Mattawa Community Clinic and earmarked to help with
medication costs for patients with diabetes. The class motto for the walk is:
“We support our community because our community supports us!”
For the event, students had to complete four steps: research, program
planning, implementation, and evaluation and planning for the next year.
With teacher guidance, students created committees based on the class
research and then each student took responsibility for certain elements
of the event. The day of the event is a major class effort with all students
involved, and when it is over, the students clean up and evaluate the event.
Bezdicek says they hope to see more people come out next year to walk
and help the students support our community!
2012 Wahluke Summer School
The emphasis for summer school this year will be on developing the
language of our K-8th grade students through fun and engaging hands-on
activities. We will also be offering credit recovery classes for our 9th – 12th
graders. Classes will run from June 18-July 19, Mondays through Thursdays. The hours will be from 8-11 and from 12-3 with a lunch provided for
the students and limited bus transportation.

student athletes that competed in District and
State level competitions this spring in tennis,
golf, and track. You all showed great courage!

Hemos tenido un gran año! Felicitaciones a todo el personal de nuestra
escuela y los estudiantes por su arduo trabajo y el éxito de este año. Sobre
todo por sobrevivir y prosperar durante nuestro primer año de reconfiguración! Creo que como muchos, que nuestra actualización del programa
bilingüe y la reconfiguración de este año ha sido un éxito que le ayudará a
nuestros estudiantes desde hace muchos años en el futuro. Todavía tenemos mucho trabajo que hacer, sin embargo gracias a nuestro dedicado

Actualización del Programa Bilingüe
Fue un gran año con nuestra actualización del programa bilingüe! Hemos
oído historias de todo el distrito que los estudiantes están aprendiendo
Inglés más rápido que nunca. Este es el resultado de nuestro personal de
instrucción dedicado y el enfoque intencional del personal de la academia
en torno al lenguaje, matemáticas y lectura.

número 24 anual de graduación de la Escuela Preparatoria de Wahluke
el viernes, 1 de junio. La clase de 2012 es a la clase más grande de graduados en la historia de la escuela.
En el momento de la ceremonia, la clase se había ganado $ 330,000
en becas. Este año, co-valedictorians son Keah Murdoch y Vivar Miguel,
y el salutatorian es Jonathan Hopkins. La Sra. Murdoch planea asistir a

Graduación de Sentinel Tech 2012
Estos 10 estudiantes trabajaron duro este año para poder graduarse.
Ellos, junto con otros estudiantes de Sentinel Tech, pasaron 188 clases.
También han disfrutado de otras actividades, como cortando calabazas,
creando diseños de camisetas, y cocinando bbq’s los viernes. La graduación es un gran logro por estos estudiantes hecho posible por tantas horas
de trabajo duro. Felicidades a los Graduados. Buen Trabajo!

Mostrando el Personal de Wahluke
Estamos muy orgullosos de todo nuestro personal en las escuelas
Wahluke! Nos gustaría destacar a quien sentimos ha tomado el distrito al
siguiente nivel! Este mes mostramos a:

La Academia de K-5 en Wahluke tuvo un primer año excelente dándole
servicio a 383 estudiantes en las tres elementarías en lectura, matemáticas
y lenguaje con muchos estudiantes recibiendo servicios en más de una de
estas áreas. Más de 500,000 minutos de instrucción se proporciono a los
estudiantes con la mayoría de ese tiempo fuera de su tiempo central de
lectura de matemáticas. Los estudiantes recibieron entrenamiento intensivo
centrado en las habilidades específicas que les faltaba. La mayoría de los
estudiantes obtuvieron beneficios en sus áreas de enfoque y se acercaron
a su nivel de grado. Otros estudiantes que continuaban luchando fueron
identificados para la Respuesta a la Intervención (RTI), donde se puede
continuar recibiendo instrucción adicional en grupos pequeños o fueron

Escuela de Verano de Wahluke 2012
El énfasis de la escuela de verano de este año será en el desarrollo del
lenguaje de los estudiantes en grados k a 8º a través de la participación
en actividades prácticas. También se ofrecen clases de recuperación de
créditos para los de grado 9º a 12º. Las clases serán a partir del 18 junio
al 19 de julio, de lunes a jueves. El horario será de 8:00am a 11:00am y
de 12:00pm a 3:00pm con el almuerzo proporcionado a los estudiantes y
el transporte de autobús limitado.

Vocational Program
Appreciates Community Volunteers
Vocational Shop instructor Rich Arlt, center, truly appreciates the time
that these two gentlemen contribute to our students.
Rod Heen, left, is a retired welder who lives in Ellensburg. He donates
his time and expertise helping our students and our 21st Century Program
during the Open Shop days. Mr. Heen has been an inspiration and role
model to us all!
Band Program Scores Big This Year
The Wahluke District band program continues to develop, and the expectations and number of students who participate continues to grow. Along
with the developing concert bands at the 7th grade, 8th grade and high
school levels, the marching band has had recent success taking 1st place
in the Zillah parade in 2011 and 2nd place in the Selah parade this year.
The Wahluke District mariachi group also continues to develop, adding
new instruments and members every year. The first annual band camp
will be held August 13th – 17th so the bands can prepare for scheduled fall
events such as Mattawa Community Days Parade, the Ellensburg Rodeo
Parade and the upcoming football season. Band director James Jydstrup
says all of this would not be possible without the continued support of the
Wahluke administrative team, the community, the students, the parents
of the students that participate, and all who have chosen to support our
growing program.

El programa de banda del distrito Wahluke continua a desarrollarse, y

Jerry Parker, right, is another volunteer who has been instrumental in
establishing our new Picture Framing Shop. He donates approximately 15
hours a week helping students on various woodworking projects, writing assignments, and life’s challenges. Jerry also serves as a substitute teacher
in the district. He is a retired science teacher and avid woodworker.

Aprecia a Voluntarios de la Comunidad

What: Hey Kids and Teens...Join us for a nutritious Summer lunch or breakfast at no charge! As
part of the Summer Food Program we will again be offering lunch at no cost for summer school
students and local children under the age of 19. All food must be eaten in the cafeteria.
What time?
Breakfast: 7:15 am to 7:45 am
Lunch will begin at 11:00 am end at 12:30 pm

Appropriate school attire is required. No gang attire or harassing behavior allowed.
