FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
February 01, 2015
“Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the Lord who made us.” - Psalm 95:6
PASTOR’S REFLECTION
In order to fully understand the power of today’s readings we must take a brief look at the religious teaching
experience of the Jewish people at the time of Jesus.
For the everyday Jewish man or woman, the most
important religious leader was a man known as a Scribe.
He literally ruled on every matter in Jewish life, whether
it was an issue of worship, family life,
discipline, marriage, children, or interpretation of the
Bible. However, the Scribe was forbidden to teach
anything on his own – it wasn’t “his” teaching and the
authority to teach came from books and from a sort of
committee of Scribes. So, the people knew that a Scribe
would never say, “I tell you …”
Because of this centuries-long tradition, when Jesus
began his teaching with, “But, what I tell you is, …” it was
astounding. To many, it was blasphemous! That’s why
the people were so surprised – why they said: “This man
speaks with authority, not like the Scribes.” This was totally new teaching.
Jesus’ authority comes not from power over people,
but from his complete relationship with his Father. The
people recognized this and they were drawn to Jesus’
teaching because he was authentic and filled with the
Truth.
Today, it is important for us to recognize the teaching
of Jesus in our own hearts. It is not simply words on a
CANDLEMAS-FEB2
Feast of the Presentation of the Lord
Old Simeon said, “Master, now you are dismissing your
servant in peace, according to your word, for mine eyes
have seen your salvation…”
We read this in Luke, 2:29-30 when Jesus is presented
in the temple 40 days after his birth. Simeon had been
promised by God that he would see the Messiah, the
Light of the World, before he died. The Feast of the
Presentation of the Lord, often called Candlemas,
commemorates the purification of the Blessed Virgin
Mary and the presentation of Christ in the temple,
which occurred 40 days after his birth as prescribed by
Jewish law. This feast is often called by its English name,
Candlemas, “Candle Mass” because it was common for
the celebration of Mass to be preceded by the blessing
and distribution of candles (since at least the 7th
century), most likely to symbolize Christ’s role as Light
of the World. What better way to give one last “hurrah”
to the victory of the Christmas season of light over
darkness?
page, but a loving relationship written on our hearts.
When Jesus teaches us, for example, to love our neighbor, do good to those who persecute you, it is not a
teaching based on a committee – it is teaching coming
from the heart of God and meant to touch our hearts
and guide us to anew way of thinking and acting.
May we learn a new way of listening, a new way of
learning; the Way of the Heart – the Way of Christ.
