Pastor Reflection
We either pay attention to or ignore “clock time” as we play in
the summer sun and note the earth’s tilt and the lengthening of
days. We live by time. We reckon time in seconds and minutes and
hours, or we use bigger chunks like suppertime and summertime.
God keeps another sort of time. God speaks to us of “saving
time,” that is, the time of salvation. This sense of time is called
kairos, and this time is always now, always present and available,
always revealing, often surprising.
This Sunday’s readings alert us to the reality and import of
God’s time. Ezekiel and the Gospel of Mark remind us that our
labor and our plotting and our planning rest in God. For God takes
our smallest efforts and makes them great works. Paul points us to
the “harvest” time, urges us to be watchful for its coming, and calls
us to recognize that we must spend our time in pleasing God.
GOD’S SAVING TIME
We are a people who schedule, plot, and plan. Even in the
summertime, we live in a world of adjusted clocks and tight schedules. Even in the summertime, we are obsessed with time, striving
to own it, stretch it, or save it, if only to waste it in the end. Thank
goodness that even in summertime we are reminded that God’s
salvation—“God’s Saving Time”—is always at hand. Thank goodness that we are able to plot the time of summer in order to consecrate it and there encounter the God who orders not only all
things, but all time as well.
Whatever grows around us on the windowsill or in the garden,
whatever appears fresh at the market, can remind us of plotting
time and of the surprises of time’s unfurling, the benevolent time
of God’s coming. That is why this time is as good a time as any to
nurture the inner ear, the inner eye, and to move to the rhythm of
God’s saving time, God’s surprising salvation.
PASS A GOOD TIME
In Louisiana’s Cajun country, folks invite one another over to
“pass a good time, cher.” We who are church are here to pass a
good time, to tend to one another, to tend to God’s good earth
and our good gardens. We are here to be wide awake to God’s
saving time within all and through all.
We pass a good time here but once, however, so we must take
time to proclaim God’s timeless faithfulness through summer’s
short nights and to sing of God’s endless kindness at summer’s
fresh new dawn. We must give ourselves and others the time to
grow and prosper under the watchful eye of God, who, as an old
prayer reminds us, dwells with us in time “beyond the region of
thunder, in a land that is always peaceful, always serene and bright
with . . . resplendent glory.”
Today’s Readings: Ez 17:22–24; Ps 92:2–3, 13–14, 15–16; 2 Cor

Priests’ Retirement Fund Collection
Father’s Day Weekend
Once a year, we are asked to remember the retired priests who
have served faithfully for many long years in the 90 parishes in
our diocese. The annual cost of retirement continues to grow, as
our compensation to the retired priests becomes more and more
realistic. We presently have 27 retired priests who have served
the parishes of the Diocese of Fresno. There will be a second
collection at all weekend Masses on June 20th & 21st to support
the retired priests of our diocese. Please be generous with a
Father’s Day Retirement donation and remember them in your
daily prayers!

MARRIAGE & FAMILY LIFE Continued
One of the topics addressed at the October 2014
Synod of Bishops on “Pastoral Challenges to the
Family in the Context of Evangelization,” was the
need for a new way of communicating Church teaching about marriage in contemporary society, using
positive, elevating language that invites. As the
synod’s final report stated this need will not be
solved by merely presenting a set of rules.
“Marriage,” the report emphasized, “is not a ‘yoke,’
but a ‘school of humanity’ (Guadium et Spes, 52), a
model where God’s deeper purpose for our lives is
revealed.” Today, we must reach people in fresh, new
ways that address the real, concrete circumstances of
their lives.
um, also held at the Vatican. The group focused on
new ways speaking old truths. One theme was the
beauty of self-gift – “of unselfishness, of avoiding
ego, of gift, of service, of sacrifice,” she said. In short,
communicating about marriage should not be passive, flat, and rule-based. It should reflect the immense power and love of our Creator, and the fulfillment of the human heart and soul that a successful,
Christian marriage achieves.
“Faith is no refuge for the fainthearted, but something which enhances our lives,” Pope Francis, in his
EncyclicalLumen Fidei, wrote. “It makes us aware of a
magnificent calling, the vocation of love.” It is a question of allowing people to experience that the Gospel
of the Family is a joy that “fills hearts and lives,”

siempre serena y luminosa . . . resplandeciente de [su]
gloria”.
