THE PASTOR’S CORNER
“Thus says the Lord, the God of hosts: Woe to
the complacent in Zion! Lying upon beds of
ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches,
they eat lambs taken from the flock, and calves
from the stall! Improvising to the music of the
harp, like David they devise their own
accompaniment.” “Abraham replied, ‘My child
remember that you received what was good
during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise
received what was bad, but now he is comforted
here whereas you are tormented.’”
The story Jesus tells of poor man Lazarus is not just
a story, but tells us of today. The prophet Amos
speaks to us, blessed, comfortable, complacent,
satisfied, and sometimes avaricious, seeking more
and more, less grateful and less satisfied while
ignoring others in need. Surely, we are a most
charitable people, but giving from our excess. We
should examine our ‘wants’ and our ‘needs.’
Pope Saint John Paul spoke at Battery Park in New
York, telling us that Lazarus is at our door. The sad
thing with the rich man, was not that he didn’t help,
he seemingly did not see the person at his door. As
he looked out he looked past, he looked over
someone nearby. As parents do we look to the real
needs of our children. As adults, does our
compassion for the elderly sick and disturbed cause
me pain?
The often quoted statement ‘prophets are to comfort
the disturbed and disturb the comfortable’ should
allow today’s scripture to speak to our hearts.
PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
O Holy Spirit, Spirit of wisdom and divine love,
impart Your knowledge, understanding, and counsel
to youth that they may know the vocation wherein
they can best serve God. Give them courage and
strength to follow God's holy will. Guide their
uncertain steps, strengthen their resolutions, shield
their chastity, fashion their minds, conquer their
hearts, and lead them to the vineyards where they
will labor in God's holy service.

“¡Ay de los que se sienten seguros en
Sión, acostados en lechos de marfil y apoltronados
en sus divanes, comen los corderos del rebaño y los
terneros sacados del establo! Improvisan al son del
arpa, y como David, inventan instrumentos
musicales… ‘Hijo mío, respondió Abraham,
recuerda que has recibido tus bienes en vida y
Lázaro, en cambio, recibió males; ahora él
encuentra aquí su consuelo, y tú, el tormento.
La historia de Jesús sobre un pobre hombre llamado
Lázaro nos habla a nosotros hoy. El profeta Amos
nos habla a nosotros, quienes hemos sido
bendecidos, confortados, que estamos satisfechos,
que somos avaros y queremos más y más, nos hemos
vuelto desagradecidos y menos contentos mientras
ignoramos a los necesitados. Seguramente que
somos muy caritativos, pero con lo que nos sobra.
Deberíamos examinar nuestros ‘deseos’ y nuestras
‘necesidades’.
El Papa San Juan Pablo II habló en Battery Park en
Nueva York, y nos dijo que Lázaro nos está tocando
la puerta. Lo triste del hombre rico es que no sólo
no ayudó, sino que ni cuenta se dio de que había
una persona en la puerta. Pasó sin ver. Como
padres, vemos las necesidades reales de nuestros
hijos. Como adultos, ¿sentimos compasión por los
ancianos enfermos y trastornados, hasta el punto de
sentir dolor?
La popular cita ‘Los profetas son para acomodar a
los perturbados y perturbar a los cómodos’ debería
hoy hablarle a nuestros corazones.
