T
he first Super Bowl was played on January 15, 1967 when Green Bay beat Kansas
City 35-10. Last year, Super Bowl XLVI, the Giants beat the Patriots 21-17. In between these dates have been a succession of games, some memorable, most not, some
memorable only because of a gaffe or “malfunction” or because of a particular commercial launch. Regardless, Super Bowl has become part of the American tradition. Like
Thanksgiving and Independence Day, it is a uniquely American celebration that goes far
beyond just the outcome of a game. For many, it is
the only football game they will watch all year. The
celebration is about family and community.
(Interesting to note is the fact that the head coaches
for the contending teams are brothers, Jim and John
Harbaugh.)

ach year, right around Super Bowl Sunday, we
kick off what has become a tradition in the
Archdiocese, Together in Mission. Together in
Mission, our annual appeal that allows us to maintain our Catholic presence in the poorest areas of
our Archdiocese has kept churches and schools
open even in our toughest economic times. It is not
a game to watch, but it ties in with our great Catholic tradition of sharing what we have with those in
need. It is a celebration of family and community.
It connects us in the mission of evangelization.
T
his year, I would like to invite you once again
to consider joining us in our mission to maintain our Catholic presence throughout our city. It
does not matter how much you pledge. Your support represents a tangible connection that stretches
throughout our archdiocese, all of us working together and sharing in the mission of Christ. Last
year, over 500 of you donated a total of almost
$128,000. That generosity allowed some of our parishes to hire directors of religious education, put
new roofs on churches and schools, update security
for buildings, pay heating and electricity bills,
among many others. Together in Mission may not
get the hype of Super Bowl Sunday, but it changes
lives in a way that a football game cannot. Thank
you for your continued generosity to this appeal.

l primer Súper Tazón se jugó el 15 de enero de 1967 cuando el Green Bay venció a Kansas City 35 a
10. El año pasado, el Súper Tazón número 46º, los Gigantes vencieron a los Patriotas 21 a 17. En medio de estas fechas ha habido una sucesión de juegos, algunos memorables, no la mayoría, algunos memorables solo por un desliz o “malfuncionamiento” o debido a un lanzamiento comercial en particular. De todos modos, el Súper Tazón ha venido a ser parte de la tradición americana. Al igual que el Día de Acción
de Gracias y el Día de la Independencia, es una celebración exclusivamente estadounidense que va mucho
más allá del resultado de un juego. Para muchos, es
el único juego de fútbol que verán durante todo el
año. La celebración es sobre la familia y la comunidad. (Es interesante señalar el hecho de que los entrenadores de los equipos contendientes son hermanos, Jim y John Harbaugh.)

en la Arquidiócesis, Juntos en Misión. Juntos en Misión, nuestro llamamiento anual que nos permite
nuestra presencia católica en las áreas más pobres de
nuestra Arquidiócesis ha mantenido iglesias y escuelas abiertas aún en nuestros más difíciles tiempos
económicos. No es un juego para ver, pero su vinculación con nuestra tradición católica de compartir lo
que tenemos con los necesitados. Es una celebración
de familia y comunidad. Nos conecta en la misión de
evangelización.

ste año, me gustaría invitarlos una vez más a
considerar unirse a nosotros en nuestra misión
para mantener nuestra presencia católica a través de
nuestra ciudad. No importa cuanto pueda prometer.
Su apoyo representa una conexión tangible que se
extiende a lo largo de nuestra Arquidiócesis, todos
trabajamos juntos y compartimos en la misión de
Cristo. El año pasado, más de 500 de ustedes donaron un total de casi $128,000. Esa generosidad permitió que algunas de nuestras parroquias contrataran
directores de educación religiosa, poner nuevos techos en iglesias y escuelas, actualizar seguridad en
los edificios, pagar facturas de calefacción y electricidad entre muchas otras. Juntos en Misión no puede

la vida de manera que un partido de fútbol no puede.

In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus was “led by the Spirit”
into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the
devil. During this time He had ample opportunity
to make decisions that would use His status as
“beloved Son” to His advantage – and result in empowering the devil. But instead, He continually
turned to God in obedient reliance.
Just as Jesus turned to God in His days in the desert, Lent is a time for each of us to inspect our behaviors, our attitudes, our spirituality and our reliance in God. And in so doing, to become closer to
God, to more appreciate God and to better understand what God has done for us by sacrificing His
only Son on our behalf.

STATEMENT OF ARCHDIOCESE
OF LOS ANGELES REGARDING
NEWS REPORTS ABOUT CLERGY
ABUSE DOCUMENTS:
No institution has learned more from mistakes made
decades ago in dealing with priests who have abused
young people than the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. We
have apologized for the sad and shameful actions of
some priests, as well as for our inadequate responses
in assisting victims and in dealing with perpetrators.
For more than a decade, however, few institutions have
done as much as the Los Angeles Archdiocese to
promptly report abuse allegations to civil authorities,
to screen all those who supervise children, and to train
adults and children in the latest abuse prevention procedures. The past cannot be changed, but we have
learned from it. We are justifiably proud of our record
of child protection in the 21st century, and we remain
vigilant against all that would harm our children and
young people.

EL RECHAZO DE JESUS
Por Humberto Beltrán
Cuantas veces nos ha pasado que hemos dicho
algo o hemos hecho algo y no nos creen que lo
hayamos hecho nosotros, algunas veces por el lugar de donde venimos piensan que es un lugar o
país muy atrasado para que sepamos lo que sabemos, algunas otras veces por lo que aparentamos
personalmente, personas sencillas. Hay hasta un
refrán muy conocido que dice: “Nadie es profeta
en su tierra”.
Algo así le paso a Jesús. El programa liberador
que Jesús proclamó en la sinagoga de Nazaret suscitó diversas reacciones: reconocimiento y admiración, sorpresa y estupefacción, indignación y
ruptura. De un lado, está la actitud del discípulo
que admira la sabiduría de la Palabra de Dios, más
que su eficacia milagrosa; de otro, lado la actitud
de incredulidad ante la persona de Jesús, (hijo de
José), tomado por un hombre cualquiera.
El escándalo o la necedad se producen cuando se
juzga con estrechez y soberbia el mensaje de
Jesús y su figura. No se tolera el profetismo de
Jesús. Esa actitud es consecuencia de falta de fe.
Naturalmente, quien no acepta a Jesús no puede
recibir la Palabra de Dios como gracia. Esto puede ocurrirnos a los que, de palabra al menos, nos
consideramos cristianos.
Jesús no tiene patria
El mensaje de Jesús es universalista: no está destinado exclusivamente a una raza o a una nación.
Cuando los de cerca rechazan a Jesús, lo admiten
los de lejos, especialmente si están necesitados.
Dicho de otro modo: Jesús no tiene patria; tiene
pueblo, pueblo de Dios. La opción de Jesús por el
pueblo y por los pobres le acarreará un destino
trágico de amenazas y muerte. Nosotros, en cambio, pretendemos secuestrar a Jesús como si fuera
de nuestra patria, o rechazarlo porque no aceptamos su mensaje evangélico.
En la primera lectura oímos acerca del profeta Jeremías. El profeta Jeremías es uno de los profetas
de los que se conocen más detalles de su vida y de
las penas que tuvo que pasar para cumplir con su
misión. Siendo de carácter más bien apacible y
tranquilo tuvo que afrontar momentos muy importantes en la vida de la nación y verse perseguido y
despreciado por anunciar la voluntad del Señor.
Este profeta recuerda mucho al mismo Jesús. Sucede que es el mismo Dios que obra entonces y
ahora. Por tanto las huellas que deja se parecen
aquí y allá.
Dios nos prepara desde antes de nacer
Gracias a la experiencia del profeta sabemos que
Dios prepara amorosamente con anticipación el
camino de nuestra vida, sin dejar de contar con
nuestra libertad. Estando nosotros en el seno de
nuestras madres, y aún antes, ya piensa en nosotros. Las cosas del Señor se deben preparar con
toda la anticipación posible para que resulten en
alabanza de su gloria y atracción de los que no creen. Y una vez emprendidas, deben mantenerse porque Dios se lo merece y no podemos estar cambiando de rumbo como el viento.
Y también en la lectura vemos que no estamos solos y eso va contra el desánimo que nos entra a
veces de la noche a la mañana, como si Dios ya
nos hubiera abandonado. Precisamente nos acaba
de decir: “Estoy contigo para protegerte. Este día
hago de ti una fortaleza, un pilar de hierro y una
muralla de bronce frente a la nación entera”
Reflexión
El Señor nos previene que esta actitud cristiana será difícil. Ningún profeta es bien
recibido en su patria. Y en la patria terrena, que es este mundo en que vivimos, es
difícil ser profeta de Dios. Pero depende
también de que sepamos quienes abrirán
las puertas al evangelio y no nos creemos
falsas expectativas. No son los grandes de
la tierra, sino aquellos que, como las viudas del tiempo de Elías y de Eliseo, han
puesto su confianza en el Señor.

Ninguna institución ha aprendido más que
la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles de los
errores cometidos hace muchas décadas, en
el procedimiento con sacerdotes que han
abusado de menores. Nos hemos disculpado por los tristes y vergonzosos actos de
algunos sacerdotes, así como por la respuesta insuficiente en la asistencia a las
víctimas y en el procedimiento con los
agresores. Sin embargo, pocas instituciones han hecho tanto como la Arquidiócesis
de Los Ángeles viene haciendo hace más
de una década por reportar rápidamente a
las autoridades civiles las acusaciones de
abuso; por revisar rigurosamente los antecedentes de todos aquellos que supervisan
a menores; y por enseñar a niños y adultos
los últimos procedimientos de prevención
de abusos. No se puede cambiar el pasado,
pero hemos aprendido de él. Tenemos razones para estar orgullosos de nuestro historial de protección a menores en el siglo
XXI, y seguimos alertas a todo aquello que
pueda hacer daño a nuestros niños y jóvenes.

El Expediente Personal de los
Sacerdotes Acusados
La Arquidiócesis ha cumplido
con la orden del juez federal jubilado que
dio en el 2011 de editar los archivos personales de los sacerdotes acusados de
abuso sexual antes de que estos archivos
sean accesibles al público. La orden del
juez fue el resultado de un proceso que
los abogados de las víctimas de abuso y la
Arquidiócesis acordaron sería aceptable
por todos los involucrados. Es importante
señalar que la orden del juez especifica
las modificaciones en parte debido a lo
que él dijo eran demostrables cambios positivos que la Arquidiócesis ya a implementado a reglas y procedimientos en reportar el abuso a las autoridades y en el entrenamiento del personal y los niños en las
técnicas de prevención de abuso. Gran
parte de la información de los archivos es
antigua y ya ha sido objeto de una amplia
cobertura en la prensa y que se dio a conocer la Arquidiócesis en El Informe al
Pueblo de Dios del 2004. No hay sacerdotes en ministerio que hayan abusado de un
menor.

The Archdiocese has complied with a retired federal
judge's 2011 order to edit the personnel files of priests accused of
sexual abuse, prior to those files being released to the public. The
judge's order was the result of a process that attorneys for abuse
victims and the Archdiocese agreed would be accepted by all parties involved. It is important to note that the judge's order specified
the edits in part due to what he said were demonstrable positive
changes the Archdiocese had already implemented to its policies
and procedures in reporting abuse to authorities and in training
personnel and children in abuse prevention techniques. Much of
the information in the files is decades old and has already been the
subject of in-depth coverage in the press and was disclosed by the
Archdiocese in the 2004 Report to the People of God. There is no
priest in ministry who has been found to have abused a minor.
