Gianantonio” y Palais Rouge Ciudad de Buenos Aires _____________________________________________________________________________________________ Conferencia Plenaria: Ictericia durante el amamantamiento Autor: Dra. Ruth Lawrence Fecha: 3 de octubre de 2008 Jaundice or hyperbilirubrnemia is a commom symptom among newborns and especially prematures. It occurs more commonly among breastfed infants. This is attributed to the fact that some infants do not receive enough calories in the first few days and thus do not remove the meconium which contains high levels of bilirubin from their gut promptly. All infants are at risk for hyperbilirubinemia from causes such as bruising, cephalohematoma, blood type incompatibility and hepatic immaturity. The management of these infants must include the proper management of breastfeeding. Jaundice does not require discontinuing breastfeeding.
