2016 Catholic Services Appeal
We are asking for your contributions and/or pledges
during masses this weekend, Feb. 13-14. The Catholic
Services Appeal Foundation (CSAF) supports the 17
Collective Ministries of our Archdiocese. These ministries
shepherd more than 200 programs and serve many
thousands in need. Ascension Catholic School is among
the organizations that benefit. Our parish also receives 25%
of the amount we collect in our parish -- if we reach our
goal (which this year is $10,848). As a reminder, the CSAF is
a separate organization from the Archdiocese of St. Paul
and Minneapolis. None of the money collected goes to
the archdiocese. Please give generously!
‘Year of Mercy’ discussion continues
Our adult formation series, Life in Abundance: Joy & Mercy,
continues Thursday, Feb. 18. Come learn about Pope Francis’s
Year of Mercy and his Apostolic letter, “The Joy of the Gospel.”
Father Dale Korogi will lead the discussion. Dinner is at 6 p.m.,
with program from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Register in the back of church

Since 1966, Fr. Robert Hazel has served at a number of parishes
in the diocese, including Ascension from 1993 to 1999. All
are invited to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of his
ordination. He will celebrate mass at 10 a.m. Sunday, March

A
mong some Native American peoples, there was a
custom where one would spend a period of days or
weeks, withdrawing from ordinary activities, taking little
food or water, and quietly sitting in the ashes of the hearth in their
communal home — a position normally reserved for outcasts or
beggars. Nobody asked why: it was taken for granted that the
individual was working through something — a discernment,
depression, some crisis — and needed the space and the silence
to heal. When they eventually got up, washed off the ashes, and
resumed their regular life, they were presumed to be better, that
the ashes had done some important, unseen work.
More familiar to us, perhaps, is the tale of Cinderella. The name,
Cinderella, literally means “the young girl who sits in the cinders,
the ashes.” Prior to the glass slipper, the gown, the pumpkin
coach, the ball, the prince, and the marriage, there was hard
work and humility—in the ashes.
The ashes that mark the beginning of Lent are blunt, primal,
earthy: dirt. They humble us, reminding us that we’re formed
from clay, fragile, mortal. But they also point to our potential: that
we’re created for so much more.
This is not “ordinary time.” During Lent, we sit among the ashes:
we renounce the dance, refrain from the banquet, and retire to
a place where God can do some important, unseen work. By
acknowledging and accepting our humanity, we allow the Spirit
of Jesus Christ to reanimate the dust of our lives, bringing out our
full potential. For forty days, we are hungry and poor, open, more
than ever, to God.
Yes, we are dust — and can be, shall be, so much more.

ntre algunos pueblos nativos americanos, existía la
costumbre de donde se podría pasar un período de días o
semanas, la retirada de las actividades ordinarias, teniendo
poca comida o agua, y tranquilamente se sienta en las cenizas
de la chimenea en su casa, una posición común normalmente
reservados de parias o mendigos. Nadie preguntó por qué:
se daba por sentado que el individuo estaba trabajando a
través de algo, un discernimiento, la depresión, algunas crisis
y necesitaba el espacio y el silencio para sanar. Cuando
finalmente se levantó, se lavaron las cenizas, y reanudaron
su vida normal, que se presume como mejor, que las cenizas
habían hecho un trabajo importante, sin ser visto.
Más familiar para nosotros, quizás, es el cuento de la Cenicienta.
El nombre, la Cenicienta, significa literalmente “la joven que se
sienta en las cenizas”. Antes de la zapatilla de cristal, el vestido, el
coche de la calabaza, la pelota, el príncipe, y el matrimonio, no
había trabajo y humildad -en las cenizas.Las cenizas que marcan
el inicio de la Cuaresma son contundentes, primal, terrenal:
la tierra. Nos humillan, nos recuerda que estamos formados a
partir de arcilla, frágil, mortal. Pero también apuntan a nuestro
potencial: que fuimos creados para mucho más.
Esto no es “. Tiempo ordinario” Durante la Cuaresma, nos
sentamos entre las cenizas: renunciamos a la danza, abstenerse
del banquete, y retirarse a un lugar donde Dios puede hacer
un trabajo importante, sin ser visto. Al reconocer y aceptar
nuestra humanidad, permitimos que el Espíritu de Jesucristo
a reanimar el polvo de nuestras vidas, llevando a cabo todo
nuestro potencial. Durante cuarenta días, estamos hambrientos
y pobres, abierto, más que nunca, a Dios.
Sí, somos polvo y podemos ser mucho más.
