Dear Parishioners,
The summer begins to wind down. The days get shorter. The evenings get cooler. Beach chairs are removed
from the car trunk and stored in the garage. Labor Day plans begin to be discussed. The final propane tank is
purchased for the grill. Baseball pennant drives begin in earnest. Days of relative leisure begin to morph into
frenetic afternoons at the mall for "back to school shopping" for new clothes and supplies.
But you know, there is a comforting sameness about the rituals of pre-Labor Day. The first day of school
represents something of a rebirth. It offers an opportunity for new experiences, new relationships, new
knowledge, and new skills, whether you walk the halls of America’s schools or look on from the distance. Those
three magic words “back to school” bring a frown to a youngster and a smile to a parent.
Having been a priest for over 30 years now, I have discovered something about schools. If you want to know
what kids are thinking and playing and what is the latest new fad or favorite movie or television show or
computer game, or yes, even the latest gossip or rumor, you only have to go to one place…no, not the parking
lot…but the playground! This is what you can learn about life from being on the playground:
Don’t judge people on the surface. If you observe children on the playground, they typically run off to find
a playmate. It’s not about looks; it’s more often about tuning in to see if that other child wants to have
fun…participate in the adventure.
If you fall down, get up again and go on. When a child falls down and skins a knee, he/she might need a
bit of TLC. Not for long. There are things to do! Sometimes adults forget this lesson. When bad things
happen, what’s to be gained by dwelling on it? Get over it and move on.
Dance, sing and be happy. Young children are quick to express themselves creatively through motion,
voice and other means. How sad that as we get older, we sometimes worry so much about what others
will think of our actions, that we stifle that spirit. Being outwardly joyous decreases tension and stress. A
smile or laugh is contagious. We could all learn to smile and laugh more. We could all benefit from
sharing our joy with others.
Each day is a new beginning. Children forget and forgive quickly. They rarely hold grudges. I remember so
many instances where children fought, were “enemies” and next day best friends again. What great role
modeling for adults!
Have faith and believe. This is perhaps one of the most charming childhood qualities to grasp and keep
throughout adulthood. It’s something that many adults sadly lose. They see things as they are; not as they
could be. To imagine and dream leads to opportunities. If we observe them, children will show us how
they believe. Where’s the rule that says one stops believing at a certain age? It’s a gift to be strived for
and nourished.
What if everyone had cookies and milk in mid-afternoon and then lay down for a nap? What if governments
and corporations and individuals always smiled, forgave, believed, put things back, cleaned up their messes,
made friends unconditionally and helped each other by holding hands and sticking together? What a wonderful
world that would be! In the spirit of our parish theme this year: Go Make a Difference!
And so, as we begin another school year at St. Mary’s, a very special Welcome Back to teachers and students
alike! Although the church parking lot will once again be full, so will the halls of St. Mary’s, full of the energy
and excitement that only the young can bring, and for that we are so very grateful! Our prayers and support to
our school president, Mr. Fred Haller, principals – Mrs. Mindi Imes and Mrs. Rebecca Zimmerman, our
administration, faculty and staff. A special thank you to you, our parents and parishioners, who sacrifice so
much to make St. Mary’s School possible.
God Bless Us All,
Fr. Tizio

Faith at the Table
Jesus said, “But when you give a banquet, invite the
poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will
be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will
be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
(Luke 14:13-14).
Adult: Has the hunger for status and influence in the
world around you endangered your life as a Christian?
Child: Does it make you a better person to be chosen
first for a team or some other honor? Why or why not?
Please be aware that students return to school on
Monday, 8/29. We appreciate your patience in the
parking lot during these first few weeks of school.

Ranger Rosary
The
rosary
is
a
contemplative
prayer. Reciting the rosary calls for a
quiet rhythm and a lingering pace.
Though clearly Marian, the heart of the
rosary is centered in Christ. It invites us
to contemplate the depth of Christ's love
as we meditate on the mysteries of the
Lord's life.
It's also a prayer of
petition. Mary's maternal intercession can attain all
things from the heart of her Son. “Pray a rosary daily” St.
John Paul II
Our next meeting will be Wednesday, September 7th.

DRUG PREVENTION AND TREATMENT
Leslie Holt Vega from Hope House
Larry Griffin with We Care and Friends
Between 2010 and 2013 the national heroin overdose rate
increased from 3, 036 to 8, 257. This growth of 1 death per
100,000 to 2.7 deaths per 100, 000 has been attributed to a
rapid increase in use of opioid based medications in all
segments of the population and a rapid spread to areas and
populations not previously associated with the use of
heroin. According to governmental agencies, heroin use
has rapidly spread to areas of the country and populations
that traditionally were not associated with the use of
heroin. From the northeastern and western regions, its use
is now spreading inward to middle America and
encompassing populations that reports have identified as
"unlikely users". Viewing these statistics, the question to
pose is are we experiencing an epidemic or is the use of
heroin and related substances reaching pandemic
proportions.
Anne Arundel County has had 579 overdoses and 76
deaths so far this year. Come to find out what AA Co. is
doing and how you can help. For more information contact

Most of us know Corvetts have
forever been America’s favorite
sport’s car, but did you know...The
Navy has it’s own corvetts?
Traditionally the smallest class of vessel to be a proper or
“rated” warship, it has morphed into a class of
‘littoral’ (close to shore) combat ships (LCS) that is
continually growing. Although not carrying the punch of
its bigger sister, the frigate, these shallow draft vessels
are fast, loaded with technology, and capable of being
fitted with “flexible mission modules” that ensure a much
closer to land strike capability than the bigger ‘heavy
hitters’.
VSM invites anyone wishing to attend our next meeting on
Monday, August 29th at 7:00 pm. Our meetings are held
in St. Mary’s sacristy located above the Perpetual
Adoration Chapel. All are welcome!

throughout the coming liturgical year. An offering will be
collected for our speaker. Schedule is as follows: Mass at

God's priorities are clearly evident. Our vote

the hope that Christians understand that their voice, and
God's priorities, must be heard. Available in the pro-life

School Highlights
St. Mary's High School students have been working
tirelessly to bring light and color to the halls of the high
school. Junior, Meghan Yunger, designed the initial plan
for the mural which represents the school
community. The challenge was to depict as many
aspects of the High School as possible. Meghan, along
with many members of the Art Club spent time during
their summer painting the hallway. As the school year
begins, students will continue to put the finishing touches
on this exciting piece. If you find yourself in the high
school please check out the beautiful work of art by our
talented students!

Estimados Parroquianos,
Comenzamos a hacer planes para “Labor Day”.
No pierde mucho tiempo.
