The wilderness is a demanding place for human life. Just trying to survive can seriously test our faith. In the Israelites’ journey away from a life of slavery and oppression, harsh conditions challenged their trust in the God who liberated them. But their transition brings them closer to God, and they are constantly reminded of the Lord’s gracious provision and nurturing. Good stewards believe the Lord’s presence transforms their own “wilderness” experiences into a place of divine mercy and nourishment. Reflect on your own “wilderness” experiences. How has God been present for you and nourished you in times of transition? We should commit ourselves to ‘Eucharistic coherence,’ that is, we should be conscious that people cannot receive Holy Communion and at the same time act or speak against the Commandments, in particular when abortions, euthanasia, and other serious crimes against life and family are facilitated. This responsibility applies particularly to legislators, governors, and health professionals. --Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, Pope Francis THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING We experience at the depth of our being a deep hunger and thirst for the living God. We are invited to know that need, but not to despair as our ancestors did in the desert. God does feed and nourish us. God does quench our thirst, if we let ourselves be open to God’s transforming love. Like the Samaritan woman we are called to be open to the waters of life given to us in Christ. Like her we are called to be agents of God’s transformative love in our world. Who in our lives needs us to be an agent of God’s love for them? What in our world is in need of God’s action and transformation?
