In order to provide our customers with the finest, socially responsible and sustainably sourced products, the Otis team needs to constantly be on the road to cultivate creativity and new ideas by connecting innovative and talented people around the globe. As our networks grows, so does our business and this time our commitment brought our Vice President of La Sirena Blanca Señor and me to Ecuador. Ecuador acts as one of two of the largest suppliers in the world of tuna and shrimp and just as Otis McAllister has been a key provider of U.S. food goods to them for almost a century, they reciprocate by providing our business with sustainably fished seafood we pack into our famous La Sirena cans. Ecuador has been a long-time advocate for the protection of their fishing industry by early setting fishing limitations influenced by strong ecological focus on the entire country. We’re privileged to work alongside others who share our business values and a passion for their country’s wellbeing, and we never forget to be thankful for our partnerships and friends we’ve been blessed with out there who’ve been more than gracious to show us around their country. Heck, it makes our job a lot of fun too. - Royce Nicolaisen, CEO 2 Otis McAllister, Inc. | Since 1892 Otis In Asia Inside The Rotunda Nuevas Caras 20 Otis en Asia Otis History21 La Historia de Otis Here We Grow Again 24 Seguimos Creciendo Chief Executive Officer/Director Ejecutivo: Editor-In-Chief/Jefe de Redacción: Royce Nicolaisen James Kochheiser President/Presidente: Associate Editor & Production Director Editor Asociado y Directore de Producción: Everett C. Fernando Bedoya Alicia Martin Elio Rodriguez Monica Diaz-Moreno Linguine with tuna, capers and raisins Linguine con atún, alcaparras y pasas & inside the can After scouring the oceans for the most nutritious and sustainable seafood, La Sirena is proud to bring back its tuna products in the second half of 2015. Our commitment to sustainability and responsible fishing has taken us on an exciting adventure to find the best quality tuna to put on your table. We found this tuna in the depths of the Pacific Ocean, where a number of species live and thrive in their most natural habitats. During this search, we discovered the many wonderful qualities that make this product the most sustainable for the oceans and healthy for your family, something that we are now eager to share with you and your loved ones! So… What is it that makes La Sirena Tuna so special? 1 lb dried linguine 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1 cup chopped onions 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped (1 tablespoon) 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 2 cans La Sirena tuna in water, drained 1/3 cup drained bottled capers 3/4 cup golden raisins 1/2 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley 1 libra de pasta Linguine 1/2 taza de aceite de oliva extra-virgen 1 taza de cebolla picada 3 dientes de ajo finamente picados (1 cucharada) 1/2 cucharadita del sal 1/4 cucharadita de pimiento negra 2 latas de atún en agua La Sirena escurridas 1/3 taza de alcaparras 3/4 taza de pasa 1/2 taza de perejil picado High in Protein: The importance of incorporating protein in our daily diet is known to most. This macronutrient is a component of every cell in our body and is instrumental in building and repairing tissue. We also need it to make the enzymes, hormones and body chemicals, as well as to build and rebuild bones, muscle, skin and blood! Cook pasta in 6 to 8 quarts of boiling salted water until al dente. While pasta cooks, heat oil in a 12-inch heavy skillet over high heat until hot but not smoking and cook onions and garlic with salt and pepper, stirring occasionally, until golden, 6 to 8 minutes. Reserve 1 cup of pasta-cooking water in a separate mixing bowl, drain pasta, then return to pot. In mixing bowl with water, combine tuna, capers, raisins, and parsley. Stir. Add tuna mixture to pasta, tossing to combine. Serve immediately. Sirva immediatamente. Low Mercury: As opposed to other tuna brands that catch larger fishes which are higher on the food chain and thus higher in mercury, La Sirena selects only mature but smaller fish that contain minimum traces of mercury. High in Omega 3: This fatty acid is a superhero that helps children and adults alike stay healthy and strong since before we are born. Studies shows that a steady consumption of tuna in pregnant women and nursing babies results in better visual and neurological development as well as a lower risk of cardiovascular disease later in life. For adults, Omega-3 has shown to reduce the risk of suffering from arthritis, depression, asthma, ADHD, and Alzheimer’s, just to name a few. Zero soybean proteins: While there are advantages to a high protein diet, soybean protein is far from recommended. This ‘protein’ is often created in a lab and used by many brands to add weight to its tuna products in order to meet FDA requirements. Not La Sirena! Our tuna is free from any soybean protein! With us what you see is what you get, and nothing else! NO GMOs: In our commitment to sustainability and purity, we refuse to bring any GMO products to your table. We believe in bringing you only the best our oceans have to offer as nature intended it to be. NO BPA: While BPA is not a food component, it can end up in your food. This lab chemical is added to the lining of cans and bottles to stabilize them and extend their shelf life. However, over time, BPA can soften and dissolve into the food, becoming a risk to the health of the consumers. That is why we do not add any BPA to the lining of our tuna cans, because your health is our health. For almost 100 years, we have been feeding our families the same products that we offer to yours, which is why La Sirena remains as one of the most trusted canned seafood brands amongst Latinos! We strive to bring you new and exciting products that can diversify your diet and bring you the most nutritional value. So please join us in welcoming back this member of the La Sirena Family! continua en español 4 Otis McAllister, Inc. | Since 1892 Spring 2015 | www. Spring 2015 | www.OtisMcAllister.com 7 To all my good friends: Because of you, the last week of February 2015 would be one of the most unforgettable periods of my life. I received many best wishes emails, very thoughtful gifts, warm hugs, and wonderful lunch invites as my internship came to a close. Because of your generosity and support, I could not help but become emotional - more than I thought I would be. During my internship with Otis (which I consider to be one big family), I did learn a lot about our business, which I believe will be of life-long benefit to my career. More importantly, I have learned the secret of how one company can become so successful – it is because they care for their employees more than the business itself. Just like Royce said in his Christmas speech, “We have no plants, we only have you”. As I look back to the beginning of my internship, honestly, it was so difficult for me, a lonely man who just graduated from college with limited English speaking and writing skill, to adjust to new surroundings in a foreign country. But with your help and support at work, after hours, and on the weekends, I began to improve both my speaking and writing skills, step by step. I believe that because I had the opportunity to travel throughout California during my internship, enjoying the local food delicacies along the way, and because I had so many wonderful “GIANTS” moments with many of you (GO GIANTS!), my communications skills naturally sharpened as time went by. Because you treated me like family, mentored me, and helped me to learn what it is to be a Californian, I also gradually began to feel less a foreigner as time went by. I now consider this great Bay Area to be my second home. You all have helped me to build many great memories that will be with me forever. I cannot thank you all enough. Again, thanks – I thank you all for your smiles, kindness, and all your patience. It all mattered to me more than you will ever know, and more than mere words could express. Please continue to have fun at Otis, because “fun” matters and being a fun place to intern truly helped me to achieve my dreams and aspirations. I hope to see all of you again soon – here in the Bay Area or in China as my guest. Weihao “Simon” Li concludes his 18-month internship with Otis McAllister. All the best wishes to you and your families, Todos los mejores deseos para tu y tus familias 李伟豪 Simon 8 Otis McAllister, Inc. | Since 1892 Spring 2015 | www.OtisMcAllister.com 9 By Regine Merisier This year’s International Association of Airport Duty Free Stores (IAADFS) show held at the Orlando World Center Marriott from March 22-25th brought on an array of exciting new products, partnership, and plans for the Otis Travel Retail business. The Team met with all of its current key retailers, prospective customers, and suppliers, and was proud to showcase innovative products from both its confectionery and tobacco portfolios. “After participating in the show for the last 25 years, this year’s show was by far the best show that we put together in terms of execution as well as the expansive portfolio offered” admits Nick Tamma, Otis Travel Retail 10 Chief Executive Officer. “We received numerous compliments from attendees including IAADFS’ Board President, who also extended a special invite only invitation to Otis to attend the President’s year, Otis’ Tobacco Division, American Caribbean Gateway, in conjunction with its biggest supplier, General Cigar Company, sponsored the annual IAADFS’ official golf tournament. This activity brings “The IAADFS represents our greatest opportunity throughout the year to meet with all of our key customers and showcase our new cigar items and upcoming promotional opportunities. reception.” The IAADF’s agenda included a golf event, networking and social events, and the main attraction -- the three-day trade market. For the second consecutive together customers, suppliers and distributors from around the world and provides a fun and exciting atmosphere before the fast-paced and hectic three days ahead. With such a great turnout at this year’s golf event, we are looking forward to continuing to build on the success we experienced this year, at the next year’s event. The event brings recognition to not only our company as the main sponsor, but also to our brands which are available in mostly every duty free store throughout the USA. Held on the eve of the trade show opening, over 100 golfers participated in the tournament while enjoying premium hand-rolled cigars courtesy of a live cigar roller from General Cigar. Participants also sipped on beverages from co-sponsors of each hole, which included Jack Daniel’s, Remy Cointreau, Gosling’s Rum, Original Bartender’s Otis McAllister, Inc. | Since 1892 Cocktails, and Slices Sangria by the Otis Wine division. At the end of the tournament, trophies were awarded to foursomes for First place, Last Place and contest winners from the Putting Competition, Longest Drive contest, Closest to the Pin Contest (men & women) and a chance to win a trip to Bermuda courtesy of Gosling’s Rum. “The IAADFS represents our greatest opportunity throughout the year to meet with all of our key customers and showcase our new cigar items and upcoming promotional opportunities. This entails a great deal of preparation and organization from each department but always seems to culminate in a successful three day show,” explains Sales Director for Tobacco, Marc Panara. Otis Travel Retail CEO, Nick Tamma and Cameron Shaw, Southeast Regional Sales Manager of General Cigar, were also invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony along with IAADFS Board Members and show sponsors, on the opening of the IAADFS Trade market. During the show period, Otis hosted a family-styled Buyer’s Dinner at Texas de Brazil Brazilian Steakhouse, attended by over 70 guest including suppliers from tobacco and confectionery divisions, retailer managers/buyers, and industry media, dined and enjoyed Eva Wines served by the Otis Wine division. Invitees included guests from Duty Free Americas, International Shoppes, Hudson News, UETA, Pacific Gateway, Jamaica Farewell, Caribbean Liquors & Tobacco B.V., and others. During this year’s show, Otis’ Confectionery Team introduced its newly formed partnership with German-based confectionery company Haribo Travel Retail, with distribution beginning in April 2015. As the world’s largest manufacturers of gummy and jelly sweets in the world, its widely popular gummy bear products were well received at the IAADFS. For the travel retail market, Haribo presented an assortment of Travel Retail Exclusive items with the needs of the traveling consumer in mind. These items include three gifting items: Goldbear Box 450g, Haribo Metal Suitcase, and Haribo Candy Store. Haribo’s classic bag format items will also be offered in the assortment in a much larger 500g size with varieties to include: Goldbaren, Starmix, Tangfastics, Happy Cola, Smurfs, Peaches, and Air-Parade -- as a further play on the travel theme. “We are honored and ecstatic to be partnered with Haribo. When candy giant Haribo entered the travel retail scene at the 2013 IAADFS Duty Free Show of the Americas, Nick Tamma, Marc Panara and I approached the sales team to show our interest. The brand has been sold in travel retail for many years, but until 2013 was not a strong focus of Haribo,” explains Justin Nee, Confectionery Sales Director at Otis McAllister. “Haribo has shown its commitment to the travel retail channel by introducing a travel retail exclusive assortment & ambitious marketing campaigns. Haribo has shown the same type of commitment to Otis McAllister, giving us the exclusive rights to U.S. travel retail (including Hudson News) and also specific locations in the Caribbean, Central America & South America. With travel retail’s traditional focus on chocolate items, Haribo brings a stronger presence for sugar candy in the channel and Otis McAllister Inc.” says Nee. Showcasing its core Swiss travel-retail exclusive product portfolio at the Otis booth, Lindt highlighted its premium POS displays which included the Napolitains Carrier Box display --modeled after Lindt’s bestselling item, the Assorted Napolitains Carrier Box; its newest Premium III Gondola display; and Lindt’s new Interactive Pralines Display. The interactive display comes equipped with a tablet and printer and allows travelers to include a personalized postcard greeting and photo to be placed on their Pralines gift box purchase. Retailers were very excited about this innovative concept and three retailers have already committed to featuring it in their stores. Lindt’s three 2015 novelty items were a huge focus for the company during the show, with the release of the LINDOR Limited Edition Spring Tube, LINDOR Limited Edition Autumn Tube, and Lindt’s Napolitain Travel Edition 750g set to attract considerable attention. The LINDT Napolitain Travel Edition 750g combines two much-loved concepts – LINDT Napolitains made by the LINDT Swiss Master Chocolatiers and the thrill of travel. This original collection, which is exclusive to the travel retail sector, makes an ideal souvenir of a special voyage, a treat to enjoy on the flight, or a novel gift. Ferrero Travel Retail presented its Golden Gallery gift box, containing a perfect gift selection of its famous pralines combined with nougat varieties. 12 “With such a well-established brand such as Ferrero, it is exciting to introduce this fantastic collection, in which all of our key customers are very excited to add to their assortment,” says Nee. We were also pleased to showcase Master Chocolatier, Turin; the Worlds undisputed leader in liquor filled chocolates. Turin’s portfolio of brands includes Baileys, Kahlua, Johnnie Walker & Jose Cuervo. Highlighting this year was Baileys and their new image! The new image was created to become the most loved female spirits brand in the world. The new brand positioning of Baileys is to celebrate the dual spirit of the modern woman, which falls in line perfectly with a liquor-filled chocolate. Ghirardelli Chocolate Company utilized the show’s platform to highlight its new Pick & Mix Program, which has been a recent focus for expansion in the travel retail market. The program has already been successfully implemented at International Shoppes’ John F. Kennedy International Airport’s Terminal 1 Store and is merchandised using a San Francisco Cable Car-themed display. “I am pleased to be a part of this exciting and innovative program. In the Travel Retail industry, it is important to always remain competitive and creative and create a “shopping experience.” I believe we’ve hit the nail on the head with this Pick N Mix program” boasts Matthew Panara, Sales Manager for Confectionery. Popular amongst the Japanese and Chinese travelers, the Pick & Mix, Ghirardelli adds some fun and excitement into confectionery shopping and allows travelers to essentially “pick and mix” amongst a wide assortment of Ghirardelli Square flavors. During the show, the world’s largest Duty Free store, London Supply Puerto Iguazú also committed to implementing the program. thing that sends the purchaser over the finish line. For the highly competitive travel retail market I am confident that these consumer gifts will be a strong tool to help set us apart from our competitors,” proclaims Sales Manager for Tobacco, Carla Tamma. Otis’ Tobacco Team was proud to present its new travel-focused gift with purchase offerings (GWP) to its retailers. The most recent GWP items are centered on utilizing premium products that are geared at attracting travelers and cigar smokers alike, while further enhancing the perceived value of their purchase. These items include an ultra-premium Cohiba 3-pack Traveling Case, Nike branded Golf Shirts, a plush 4-piece Traveling Kit, branded Macanudo earbuds, Heavy Duty cigar cutters, and much more. “This year we are putting a heavy emphasis on incentivizing the consumer to buy. The trip started in Taiwan (right) and included a meeting with our distributor, Babi, to develop plans for growing our business in 2015. Finding ourselves in Taiwan also gave us the chance to check on some retail stores to see firsthand how Ghirardelli looked on the shelves. To our delight, Taiwan proved to be a good market and continues to grow. After Taiwan, our group traveled over to Hong Kong just prior to the busy Chinese New Year holiday. This holiday is the peak of the gift giving season and represents the biggest opportunity for premium chocolate like Ghirardelli. Our distributor in this market, Sims, has gained great distribution in general retail, particularly with Park n Shop, one of the largest retailers in Hong Kong. The picture below is a Ghirardelli display developed and sold by Sims at a retailer in Hong Kong. While in the Hong Kong Market, we also met with our duty free customer, DFS. This is the second largest duty free retailer in the world with a dominate presence in Asia. Our duty free broker there, Market Force, represents us for Ghirardelli and secured distribution in the DFS stores at the busy Hong Kong airport. Close to Hong Kong is Shenzhen, China, the headquarters for Sam’s Club – China. Walmart has 10 Sam’s Clubs in China which includes some of their highest volume stores. We not only sell several Ghirardelli items to Sam’s, but also Martinelli’s Sparkling Apple juice as shown by the below picture at a Sam’s Club. Our last visit was with our Beijing distributor, Beijing Fortune Road. We have been doing business with Ghirardelli for several years in China, taking advantage of the growing popularity in chocolate in this huge consumer market. 20 Otis McAllister, Inc. | Since 1892 Conozca los Fundadores OTIS HISTORY JAMES OTIS, importer and exporter was born in San Francisco, California, April 15, 1863, son of James and Lucy Hamilton (Macondray) Otis. His father was a partner in Macondray & Co., importers and exporters, and was prominent in the business and public life of San Francisco, having been mayor of the city and president of the chamber of commerce. At the age of seventeen, after a trip around the world, which he chose in preference to four years at Harvard, James Otis entered business life as a clerk at Macondray & Company and at the age of 29 in 1892, founded Otis, McAllister & Co., of which he was senior partner until his death. The firm, which was a large importer of coffee and exporter of sugar, canned goods, lumber and other products, carried on commerce in practically every part of the world. Through his travels he early came to recognize the value and future importance of aviation and from the time he made his first trip by air in a zeppelin in Germany in 1913, he was an air enthusiast.
