TROFEO QUIJOTES
“Trofeo Quijotes” is a yearly competition organized by the regional Federation of
Orienteering of Castile-La Mancha which will take place in 2016 for its first time in the
lands of the Southern Iberian system, and more exactly in the wide pine forests of the
Serranía de Cuenca.
As setting we have chosen the most famous, the most emblematic, and one of the most
special places also for the practice of Orienteering: the Enchanted City.
It is so special because here karstic erosion of limestones (coming from the Slovenian
kras-karst, a Slovenian region which is well-known among orienteerers because it hosts
the famous Lipica Open) of Tertiary Age has created these famous and labyrinthine
stone landscapes, shaping the perfect scenery for a great orienteering challenge.
The terrain is really great, as it is the result of a centuries-old good forestry management
in the Serranía de Cuenca, combining technical complexity in some parts, open forests
offering fast running in others, and a soft ground allowing full runnability almost
everywhere.
The easibilty of access to Cuenca town and its great offer of accomodation and leisure
ensures the perfect complement for this Trofeo Quijotes 2016. It is difficult to surpass the
beauty of autumns in Cuenca, so we recommend a good photo camera and being
ready for having a lot of fun in this special weekend. There will also be trainings available
elsewhere in the Serrania de Cuenca, in really good-quality terrains which are still
unknown even for most Spanish orienteers.

As these are landscapes of geologic interest we have taken the decision of banning
spike shoes, because of the marks that could be left on limestone, a relatively fragile
rock.
We love this setting and we want to continue using it in competitions, and hope for
generations to come to do the same, so we kindly ask you to respect this rule, being
conscious of its fair motivation. We will take this rule very seriously so nobody will be
allowed to enter the race with spike shoes.

PRIZE- GIVING CEREMONY
On Sunday 16th October, after the Middle Distance Race, prizes will be given to
the 3 first competitors of every single category.
FECAMADO (Regional Federation) will pay for the race fees and full board
accomodation in XI Trofeo Quijotes (El Real de San Vicente-Toledo) of the two first
competitors in ME and FE and the winners in M20 and F20 categories

COMPETITION RULES
The competition is regulated by FEDO and IOF rules. We remind you that spike shoes are
forbidden because of the special rock formations.
 TERRAIN INFO
Technical, limestone rocky terrain with real labyrinths of rock (Enchanted City
http://www.ciudadencantada.es/). The forest is a black pine wood ranging from open
forest to some green areas where visibility and running speed are reduced. Slopes are
not steep. Mediterranean mountain forests over 1.300 m of altitude.
Map scales: 1:10.000 (long distance) and 1:7.500 (middle distance)
We strongly recommend the walk along the touristic pathway of the Enchanted City
http://www.ciudadencantada.es/ though even you’ll deal with similar rock formations in
your race, those are undoubtedly special because of their size, shapes and colours.

MODEL EVENT
We have chosen Los Callejones map in Las Majadas as model event because of its
resemblance to the Enchanted City rock formations. Scale: 1:7.500. Official trainings in
Monteagudillo and Los Palancares maps too. There can be even more possibilities for
training in the Serranía. Ask us for further information.
