and love: Raul Flores’s story

Everything in life moves to a
rhythm and beat. Some say that
music is the language of the Earth
and proof that there is something
greater watching over each of
us. To some, music is a hobby.
To others it’s a lifestyle. To one
young man, it’s a gift that needs
to be shared.
Raul Flores is a 27-year-old
student at San Antonio College.
He‘s been working full-time
at downtown Nix Health since
2012. Flores wasn’t sure how he
could turn his passion of music
into something bigger–a positive
impact on others lives. It wasn’t
until observant nurse Michelle
Flaig noticed Flores’ love for
music and suggested something
that would pave his path: music
therapy. After some research on
the healing power of music, Raul
knew his calling.
“I started visiting my grandpa
at the nursing home and I would
take my guitar and play to him.
It really inspired me to want to
help people,” Flores said. “Once
he passed, I felt this deep need to

Everything is bigger in Texas
– including the bad. According
to Congressman Joaquin Castro,
Texas has the highest rate of uninsured residents at a whopping
26 percent. That amounts to approximately six million people
without health insurance.
With medical insurance being
so pricey, many small businesses struggle to provide insurance
to their employees. Due to that,
it’s also a disadvantage to hire
more people. Many blame this
on Governor Rick Perry’s denial
of Medicaid expansion. By doing this, Perry turned away billions of dollars that would have
helped a little more than one
million of its poorer residents.
“I know that as a Texas Legislator, we missed one golden
opportunity. The folks that’ll
miss out are those that make the
lowest wages – unfortunately,
because of one man’s decision,” Senator Leticia Van de

get better. It’s within you,” Flores
told Rodriguez.

“That music–it does something
here,” Rodriguez said through
tears, pointing to her heart. “It
feels so warm. Thank you, for the
music,” she hugs Flores from her
hospital bed.
“This is a true labor of love. It’s
very humbling and emotionally
rewarding. In a way, it’s esoteric.
People have the power to cure
themselves. I just give them the
love and attention they never had.
Many stay here for an extended
period of time because of that.
The miracle is inside of you. You
have to want to want it yourself,”
Flores said.
