October is
Respect Life Month
I am writing this reflection from a hotel room in Laredo. My grandmother died a
few days ago. She lived a good long life and
was very loving to all of us.
It seems providential that just last
week I said I would say more about the difficult decision to end life support when the
possibility of our loved one recovering seemed very
slim or impossible.
In our case, my grandmother was completely
unconscious. She was 84 years old and had already
suffered a fall that led to a quick decline of her condition. The doctors had informed us that there was no
chance of recovery, there was virtually no brain activity, and that without the life support she would pass
away quickly.
The family made a very sound decision to remove the life support and allow her to pass away in
peace. After the machines were disconnected, she
passed away within two minutes. We prayed, we
cried, and we shared our memories of her.
Making such a decision is not easy and many
times it can seem confusing. Certainly, we should always respect the life and dignity of the human person. We must never actively end the life of a loved
one, i.e. administering a lethal dose of a substance
into the person.
There are situations where we can prayerfully
disconnect life support when that support is completely artificial. This means that when the only signs of
life are those produced by the machines (breathing,
pulse, body temperature), it is morally acceptable to
remove that artificial life support and allow the imminent and inevitable death of the person to take place.
Again, no one situation is the same and such
decisions should be made with a doctor and with the
mind of Christ and His Church, under whose guidance we can find a way through the most difficult situations. Also, you can always consult your priest to
help you.
Please pray for my grandfather as he begins a
new journey in his life. And let us all celebrate life by
not taking it for granted and always respecting it, especially in the sick and suffering.
Later I would like to share some stories about
her that I am sure you might enjoy.

disfrutaran.

All Saints Day, November 1
All Souls Day, November 2
People do not cease to exist after they pass from this
world. In fact, they are even more fully alive in eternity,
and we can hold onto the great hope of seeing them again.
On earth we are the Pilgrim Church Militant, still
fighting the earthly battle on our way Home. In Purgatory they are the Church in a state of Purification
through the great mercy of God so that they can join in
the glorious celebration of the Wedding Feast of the
Lamb in Heaven. In Heaven the Church Triumphant is
already rejoicing with Christ. We are all united in the
Body of Christ as the Communion of Saints.
We celebrate the Church Triumphant on November 1
as a great cloud of witnesses praying for us to make it
Home. We are united with them in a special way during
every Mass as we all worship God together, along with
the angels. They want to share the great treasure of their
goodness with us. “In this wonderful exchange, the holiness of one profits another” Catechism 1475.
November 2 we pray for our loved ones still on the
journey between earth and Heaven, trusting that Christ is
washing them in His own Precious Blood. We will have a
book of remembrance where we will enter the names of your
loved ones from the All Souls envelopes turned in. A donation is not required. It will be placed near the altar during
the month of November as we keep them in prayer.
Día de Todos los Santos, Noviembre 1
Día de Todos los Fieles Difuntos,
Noviembre 2
volver a verlos.

Inspire them with the vision of your Kingdom.
Give them the words they need to spread the Gospel.
