Point Foundation (Point) empowers promising
lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer
(LGBTQ) students to achieve their full academic
and leadership potential—despite the obstacles
often put before them—to make a significant
impact on society.
Point promotes change through education,
mentorship, leadership development and
community service training, and provides its
scholars with the financial ability to attend
the nation’s foremost higher educational
institutions. Point Scholars represent the best
and brightest in our community, coming from
diverse educational fields, gender identities
and expressions, sexual orientations, racial
backgrounds, economic circumstances
and geography. Scholars are chosen for
their demonstrated leadership, scholastic
achievement, community involvement and
financial need.

Dear Friends,
Carl Strickland & Bruce Lindstrom
Founders
Carl Strickland & Bruce Lindstrom
Founders
George Bernard Shaw‘s dictum that “youth is
wasted on the young” is certainly not applicable
to Point Scholars and Alumni. In 2012, Point
welcomed 29 new scholars who had collectively
devoted 16,000 hours of volunteer time to projects
benefiting their communities. All of Point’s 76
current scholars are undertaking individual
community service projects developed with the
guidance of their Point Mentors. Our scholars are
using their energies to give back to the LGBTQ
community and improve society for all. We couldn’t
be prouder of them.
“Pay it forward” is the expression Point Scholars
often use to describe making the most of the
opportunities made available to them. When
we founded Point eleven years ago we weren’t
schooled yet in the popular vernacular of “pay it
forward,” but we saw that LGBTQ youth needed our
support. Point provides a way for one generation
to help the next—which is imperative for the
continued development of the LGBTQ community.
So many people, organizations and companies
have joined us in devoting resources, time and
knowledge to growing Point and helping our
scholars. Hopefully, they all have found
that supporting Point’s mission enriches not
just our scholars’ lives, but their own, too.
Point is fortunate to have a growing number of
amazing partners who believe in our mission
and investing in the next generation of society’s
leaders. In 2012, Wells Fargo announced it would
2
increase the company’s already generous support
by providing 1.5 million over four years for new
Point scholarships, events and programs. The
Palette Fund, for the third year, made it possible
for three of our scholars to work on intensive
summer internship projects benefiting the LGBTQ
community. Steadfast supporter David Henry
Jacobs was not only the largest single sponsor
of Point’s 2012 Scholar & Alumni Leadership
Conference, but he also funded a very successful
matching donation campaign.
The commitment to Point’s mission by these major
donors is matched by thousands of individuals
who want to help Point Scholars make a difference
in the world. Listening at the summer Leadership
Conference to Point Scholars and Alumni in the
medical and public health realms discuss with
great insight and authority the current state of
HIV/AIDS research, treatment and prevention,
we have no doubt that Point is helping prepare
the next generation of leaders.
Point Foundation is able to empower promising
LGBTQ students and help them create a better
future because of the leadership you, our donors,
mentors and supporters provide today. There is no
better way to pay it forward than working together,
and we are so pleased to count you as part of the
Point family.
With gratitude,
Bruce Lindstrom & Carl Strickland

Dear Point Supporters,
We are very happy to share with you Point
Foundation’s 2011 – 2012 Annual Report,
recognizing the Foundation’s eleventh year of
accomplishments since its founding in 2001.
Point welcomed 29 new scholars in 2012, bringing
the total number of Point Scholars supported in the
2012 – 2013 academic year to 76. This past year, we
also celebrated the 21 scholars who received their
higher education degrees. These new graduates
are on their way to successful careers in diverse
fields, including medicine, architecture, psychology,
law, education, the arts and media. All of our 145
alumni remain committed to helping the LGBTQ
community by utilizing the leadership skills they
developed as Point Scholars.
Leadership is not just a hallmark of being a
Point Scholar. It is a key quality of the dedicated
individuals who serve as Point Mentors or as
members of Point’s Board of Regents, Board
of Trustees and Honorary Board. We continue
to develop and strengthen our organizational
governance through a strategic planning process
that will further Point’s mission.

In Fiscal 2012, Point was fortunate to have over
330 people volunteer with us, including mentors
to each of our Point Scholars, application readers,
office assistance, logistic support with Point Honors
and Cornerstone events, and many hours of work by
our regents, trustees and honorary board members
who serve on various committees. This year alone,
these volunteers graciously contributed 20,679 total
hours, making so much of what Point does possible.
To recognize some truly exemplary, long-time
supporters of Point, we established an Honorary
Board and welcomed as its inaugural members
Judith Light and Herb Hamsher. This year also saw
the launch of our Valedictorian Society, inviting new
professionals to take an important step in fostering
a personal culture of philanthropy by becoming
supporters of Point.
Earlier this year, we held Regional Leadership Forums
in eight cities across the country, demonstrating the
nationwide scope of Point’s mission to empower
LGBTQ students. In July, we held our annual Scholar
and Alumni Leadership Conference in Washington,
D.C., providing more than 160 members of the
Point family an opportunity to engage directly with
elected officials, members of the Administration,
policy experts and the media.
It is vital that Point continue to provide opportunities
like these, because too many young people are still
told they cannot pursue their dreams of a higher
education simply because they are an LGBTQ person.
Thanks to your support—and that of so many
individuals, corporations and organizations—Point
is able to help these deserving students achieve
their full academic and leadership potential, allowing
them to make a significant impact on society.
Sincerely,
Shelley Fischel, Esq.

“Receiving the Point Scholarship was the
difference between finishing my bachelor’s
degree or having to drop out. It also has
provided me with the comfort of knowing
I have an amazing group of
mentors and peers to
help me make
a difference
in the queer
community.”
S c h o l ar S U P P O R T & S E L E CTI O N S
Attaining a higher education degree became
possible for 29 undergraduate and graduate
students who received Point Foundation
Scholarships in 2012. All demonstrate
academic excellence, leadership skills,
community involvement, financial need,
and the ability to overcome obstacles.
Close to 2,000 scholarship applications were
submitted to Point, making this the second
highest number of applications ever received
by the Foundation. The new scholarship
recipients join 47 current Point Scholars,
for a total of 76 students receiving financial
assistance and programmatic support from
Point during the 2012 – 2013 academic year.
Point’s multifaceted support for scholars
extends far beyond our direct financial
contribution toward the cost of their education.
Each scholar is paired with a mentor, and
participates in leadership development and
training in civic engagement. Point Scholars
give back to the LGBTQ community through
the completion of an individual community
service project each year. What unites all our
Point Scholars, no matter what their
background, is their commitment to improving
society and being agents of change.
Alyssa Mandula
Alyssa Mandula was born and raised in the
conservative town of Bloomington, Illinois, where
she started her high school’s Gay/Straight Alliance
and ran The Central Illinois Safe School Alliance. She
is currently at DePaul University in Chicago, majoring
in Peace, Justice and Conflict Studies and Philosophy,
and minoring in LGBTQ Studies. Alyssa plans to make
a career of fighting for educational equality for trans
and genderqueer youth.

Erika Turner grew up in the suburbs of Las Vegas.
Upon entering Wellesley College, she became the
sex and sexuality chair of the once-homophobic
black social organization, Ethos. She also formed
blackOUT, a social and support group for queer
and questioning students of African descent.
Majoring in East Asian Studies, Erika spent her
junior year in Japan, and is writing a blog about
the experiences of black and queer students
abroad. She wants to use her passion for writing
and social justice to increase the visibility of
LGBTQ people and people of color.

Leaders h i p
From July 19-22, Point Scholars and Alumni, along with
regents, trustees and staff, convened in Washington, D.C.
as a single community for the 2012 Scholar & Alumni
Leadership Conference. The Leadership Dinner during
the Conference honored John Berry, the Director of the
U.S. Office of Personnel Management and the highestranking openly LGBT person in the federal government.
The Conference agenda included guest speakers,
workshops and panel discussions, including “Perspectives
on the LGBTQ Agenda,” “LGBTQ Leadership & Diversity,”
 which featured
and ”Point Scholar Voices on HIV/AIDS,”—
6
seven current Point Scholars who are doing important
work in public health and medicine.
Conference attendees were treated to a private tour
of the U.S. Capitol Building with Congressman David
Cicilline, a past Point Mentor, as well as a tour of the
White House. Katie Miller, Point Alumna and White House
Intern, assisted Gautam Raghavan, the Associate Director
of the White House Office of Public Engagement, in
arranging for a briefing with LGBTQ staff from a number
of federal agencies and departments.

“One of the goals of my Community Service
Project includes teaching future physicians to
be not only comfortable with LGBTQ patients,
but excited to have them as patients. This is
vital to improving the health of our LGBTQ
communities. These physicians will carry their
skills forward and impact tens of thousands
of lives in their careers.”
Co m m un i t y S er v i c e
Point Foundation is committed to helping
our scholars develop the skills they need to
become leaders in their respective professions,
communities and society. Every year of their
funding term, Point Scholars are required
to complete a Community Service Project
(CSP) that will positively affect the LGBTQ
community. CSPs provide valuable learning
experiences to our scholars in communitybased, partnership-oriented, leadership
development, civic engagement and
intergenerational mentoring.
Derek Blechinger
Rand Skolnick Point Scholar
Growing up gay in rural Minnesota, Derek
struggled with his sexuality in school, in
church, at home, and even in his doctor’s
office. The powerful role a physician can play
in people’s lives has inspired Derek to study
medicine at the University of Washington
Medical School. Derek plans to become
not only an exemplary physician, but also a
compassionate healer for those marginalized
by either their sexuality or gender.
8
In one of many notable CSPs from the past
year, Izzy Pellegrine surveyed Mississippi school
superintendents about their perspectives on
school bullying as part of a research project
that addresses the experiences of LGBTQ youth
and best practices about school safety policy. In
another, Jeremy Bearer-Friend, a current scholar
at Stanford Law School, worked with the Dean of
Admissions to improve outreach and resources
for transgender law students and applicants.
News and updates about scholar CSPs can be
found on the ViewPoint Scholar and Alumni blog
at www.pointfoundation.org/viewpoint.
“The funds I receive from Point provide crucial help
in fulfilling an immediate financial need, but the
mentoring program is how Point can help me for
a lifetime. Growing up, I did not know any gay
men who could serve as role models for how to
navigate the obstacles that stand in the way of
LGBTQ people. My mentor, Jim Dabakis, has met
his challenges in a way that I find inspiring. He
has already provided invaluable support helping
me plan my Community Service Project and is
enthusiastic about my success going forward.
He is my cheerleader, confidante, and friend.”
Men tor i ng
Each Point Scholar is provided with a mentor
who is a prominent and caring professional
in the LGBTQ and straight-allied community.
Point Mentors assist their Point Scholars with
career decisions, including the pursuit of
graduate studies and job opportunities after
graduation. Through lending their professional
expertise and career guidance, Point Mentors
become important role models to scholars,
while meaningfully broadening their own
experience.
Point conducts mentor training forums,
provides each mentor-scholar pair with a
mentoring handbook, and distributes the
online newsletter Mentoring Messenger.
Mentors are also encouraged to join scholars
at Point’s Regional Leadership Forums and
other events.
Scholars are not alone in benefiting from
Point’s Mentoring Program. Mentors have
the opportunity to enrich their own lives and
contribute to the building of intergenerational
communication and support networks to
benefit the LGBTQ community.
For more information on Point’s Mentoring
Program, visit www.pointfoundation.org.
Cary Crall
Wells Fargo Point Scholar
Born into a devout Mormon family, Cary
values his religious tradition for teaching him
to serve others. However, Cary often felt the
strain of a religious institution that failed to
validate his sexual identity. While at Brigham
Young University, he submitted an opinion
piece to the school’s newspaper challenging
the Mormon Church’s support of Proposition
8, the California ballot proposition denying
recognition of same-sex marriage.
The letter drew national media attention
after it was censored. For his efforts in writing
and defending his letter, Cary was named
one of the “Forty Under 40” by The Advocate.
He is currently studying at the Harvard
Medical School.

Thanks to the generous support of The Palette
Fund, for the third year in a row, Point was able
to provide three scholars with an innovative
paid internship at the nonprofit organization
of their choice.
Maggie Keenan-Bolger, Derrick Miller-Handley, Sarah Young
“My internship revealed to me how
under-resourced most Southern LGBTQ
organizations are, and yet how amazing
these organizations are at fighting for
social justice in a very hostile region.
I’m humbled to have been able to work
with the Southern Poverty Law Center,
thanks to Point Foundation and
The Palette Fund.”

For more information about providing
internship opportunities to Point Scholars,
please contact Point Foundation at
[email protected].
This year’s internships were awarded to
Maggie Keenan-Bolger at the NYC Division
of Green Chimneys, an organization that is
dedicated to creating safe space for LGBTQ
youth who are in foster care or homeless; Sarah
Young at the Southern Poverty Law Center, a
nonprofit civil rights organization dedicated
to fighting hate and bigotry, and to seeking
justice for the most vulnerable members of
society; and Derrick Miller-Handley at the
Hetrick-Martin Institute, an organization
that serves LGBTQ youth between the ages
of 12 and 24 and their families, through
comprehensive direct services and referrals
that foster healthy youth development. These
nonprofit organizations benefited by having
a gifted student work for them during the
summer without incurring the expense of
paying for the internships, while each scholar
received invaluable hands-on work experience
in the LGBTQ community.

2012 Alumni Conference
A lu m n i
Point’s fourth Alumni Conference was held
in Washington, D.C. in conjunction with the
organization’s Leadership Conference from July
19-22, 2012. At the beginning of the conference,
Point Alumni joined scholars, board members and
staff for a private tour of the U.S. Capitol Building,
as well as an exclusive White House briefing with
LGBTQ staff members of various government
agencies and offices. At the conference, Point
Alumni divided into affinity groups to focus on
topics such as leadership, career development,
finance and wellness, and goals and objectives
for the upcoming year.
Point’s current 145 alumni are committed to
using their talents and education to contribute
to society and to the LGBTQ community. Recent
graduates have gone on to work at corporations
and law firms, teach at prestigious universities,
direct and perform in award-winning film and
stage works, as well as devote their leadership
skills to helping nonprofits in their communities.
We are fortunate and grateful that our alumni also
are giving back to Point, through donations and
volunteering as regents, trustees, mentors and
subcommittee members.
Diego Arango
Diego Arango was raised in New Jersey and
Florida. He graduated from Columbia University
in 2012, where he majored in architecture and
now works at Joeb Moore + Partners. Diego
hopes to eventually own his own architecture
firm, and will continue his involvement in the
LGBTQ community and be a positive role model
to gay youth.
“I wasn’t always sure it would be possible
for me to achieve my dreams as an
openly gay man, but Point Foundation
recognized my hard work and promise
and invested in me. Point Scholars and
Alumni are a community that I feel
grounded in, and I can feel comfortable
being myself at all times.”

“Your determination to advance the civil rights
of our community inspires future generations to
do the same. Thank you for your contributions
to Point Foundation, which is helping me fulfill
my dreams of becoming the first openly gay
astronaut and to serve my country.”
Named Scholarships
Named Scholarships in Perpetuity
The Named Scholarships program allows
individuals, organizations, foundations and
corporations to provide substantial support
to Point Foundation by honoring the name of
an individual or organization and by making
a significant impact in the life of a deserving
student. A Named Scholarship requires a
minimum commitment of $100,000. This gift
can be donated either in one payment, or
through a commitment to make four annual
$25,000 donations in consecutive years.
Named Scholarships are a living and public
testament to one’s commitment to diversity
and leadership through education.
Endowing a Named Scholarship in Perpetuity
creates a lasting legacy that will fund the
education of Point Scholars in perpetuity.
Point Foundation will invest a contribution
of $500,000 or more in our endowment fund
and use the investment income to finance the
education of Point Scholars now and far into
the future. A Named Scholarship in Perpetuity
makes it possible to honor the name of an
individual or organization and to create an
ongoing legacy of learning and leadership.
Ved Chirayath
Wells Fargo Point Scholar
Born to Belgian and Indian immigrants
in Arizona, Ved Chirayath grew up with a
passion for human space exploration. Before
enrolling at Stanford University to study
aeronautics and astronautics, he studied
for four years at Moscow State University’s
Physics Department—the first American
to do so. Ved is determined to stand up for
LGBTQ rights and become the first openly
LGBTQ-identified astronaut, as well as a
spokesperson for the LGBTQ community in
aerospace and the natural sciences.

Introduced in 2006, the Legacy Circle was
established to honor, memorialize and thank
those friends of Point Foundation who have
arranged a bequest or planned gift to the
organization. Point works with Legacy Circle
donors and their executors to create a program
that meets both the wishes of the donor
and the needs of our scholarship recipients.
Bequests can be used to fund Point’s leadership
and mentoring programs, in addition to
Named Scholarships, ensuring recognition of
the donor’s generosity for generations to come.
If you would like to provide for Point in your
estate plans, please contact our development
department at [email protected] or

When Point was founded in 2001, there were four contributing donors. Today, Point is happy
to count 8,300 individuals, corporations and foundations as contributors over the past 11 years.
This includes members of the Cornerstone Society, a philanthropic group of dedicated individuals
who recognize the importance of helping young people reclaim their own self-worth through
education. Cornerstone Society members ensure that Point can continue its mission of providing
scholarships, mentoring and leadership training well into the future by supporting the important
work of Point Foundation with a minimum annual contribution of $500.
The Cornerstone Society is a national donor
campaign aimed at expanding Point’s
membership enrollment and growing
our philanthropic support. To accomplish
these goals, a series of Cornerstone Society
events, planned in conjunction with local
host committees, are held throughout the
country. This year, Cornerstone Society cocktail
receptions were held in Boston, Chicago,
Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco,
Seattle and Washington, D.C., and typically
featured presentations by host committee
members, Point Scholars, Alumni and staff.
Additional benefits are available to Cornerstone
Society members based on the level of their
financial support.
A contribution to Point’s Cornerstone Society
helps revolutionize the face of the LGBTQ
community through the impact of education.
For their convenience, donors to the
Cornerstone Society can also contribute in
quarterly or monthly installments.

Valedictorian Society members, many of whom are new
professionals, are taking an important step in fostering a
personal culture of philanthropy. Whereas fewer than
three percent of LGBTQ adults contribute to national
LGBTQ organizations, members of Point’s Valedictorian
Society understand the need to invest in the LGBTQ
community’s future.
Members are part of a nationwide network of advocates
for educational opportunities and leadership development
for Point’s LGBTQ scholars and alumni. Membership is an
annual minimum contribution of $240.
The following list of donors reflects individual gifts totaling
$240 - $499 between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012.

Federal employees can donate to Point Foundation through their workplace fundraising initiatives, managed through the Combined Federal
Campaign (CFC), which is an easy way to support Point through payroll deductions. You can donate to Point through the CFC using CFC# 11634.
If you are not a federal employee, and your workplace giving is administered via America’s Charities, you may also donate via payroll deduction.
Look for the “Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Scholarship Fund - Point Foundation” code under the America’s Charities member listings on/or
accompanying your pledge form.

The Annual Report presents a summary of the
financial position of Point Foundation as of
June 30, 2012.
Each year, the Board of Directors engages an
independent and accredited audit firm to
review the financial and accounting practices
of Point Foundation and to provide an
independent Auditor’s Report. This year, the
audit was conducted by Green Hasson &
Janks LLP, 10990 Wilshire Blvd. 16th Floor,
Los Angeles, CA 90024-3929. The Foundation
has received unqualified opinions on the
Foundation’s financial statements since
its inception. The audits are conducted in
accordance with U.S. generally accepted
auditing standards. An audit also includes
examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting
the amounts and disclosures in the financial
statements and includes assessing the
accounting principles used and significant
estimates made by management, as well as
evaluating the overall financial statement
presentation.
An independent Auditor’s Report, including
the complete Financial Statements and
Supplementary Information for June 30, 2012
and 2011 and the Federal Tax Form 990, for the
Point Foundation may be requested from
[email protected] or found at
www.pointfoundation.org.
