FORAN has always pursued the same goal: to maximize automation of the production process in order to build better ships at lower cost and ” in less time. That initial idea to improve SENER’s efficiency has become, 50 years on, a complete CAD software for the design, construction and engineering of all kinds of ships and marine units. FORAN is considered the technological leader in its sector and is completely international. The system is installed in shipyards and technical offices across 30 countries and is used in world renowned programs. of the production process in order to build better ships at lower cost and in less time. By and for marine engineers FORAN allows for the efficient creation of a complete and detail 3D virtual model of the vessel, from which it is possible to automatically obtain all the information needed for its manufacture and assembly. In addition, this 3D model can be reused as a data source for other tools, such as Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), procurement management or planning applications. FORAN is the only software designed by naval architects for naval architects to solve the problems they themselves face. To this end, it has always pursued the same goal: to maximize automation For this reason, it was envisaged from the very beginning as a modular and perfectly integrated system with great versatility. As such, FORAN is used “ Hasta la fecha, SENER ha diseñado con FORAN más de 1.200 buques de todo tipo, a los que se suman el número incalculable de barcos y artefactos flotantes que, a partir de FORAN, han desarrollado los clientes de SENER. To date, SENER has used FORAN to design more than 1,200 different types of ships, in addition to an incalculable number of boats and floating components that have been built by ” SENER’s clients using FORAN. SENER noticias diciembre / December 2014 7 Reportaje / Article for all types of vessels: from sailing ships to tugs, ferries, RORO, fishing vessels and large cargo vessels, as well as offshore platforms. Although it is notably marine, it can also be applied to other sectors in which SENER is active thanks to the synergies within the organization itself. One example is the 150,000 m3 third storage tank at the BBG regasification plant in Biscay, Spain, which was designed and built using FORAN. First and foremost is the company’s vision of FORAN, both in the short term and the long term. In this sense, it is vital that FORAN stay ahead of the times and foresee the state of technology in the next decade. Only in this way will it be able to offer an immediate response to new demands from the market in the moment they arise. For this it is necessary to evolve in step with technological evolutions, and FORAN has the advantage of a long pioneering history that commends it as a technology leader: it was the first software to implement a database in the product model, and the first to release a version for Windows, an Oracle database and integration with lifecycle management applications such as PLM. It is currently working on collaborative and distributed engineering applications with advanced visualization, virtual reality and augmented reality, and on concepts such as digital shipyards and robotization. In fact, two virtual reality rooms with FORAN have been delivered by SENER in a turnkey project for Navantia. referencias DESTACADAS DE FORAN: dimensiones máximas para atravesar el Canal de Panamá) del mundo. largest in the world, with 46,000 m3 capacity. 2010: The British Navy’s new aircraft carrier, the HMS Queen Elizabeth, built by BAE Systems. This contract has made FORAN an actor at the highest level of the naval sector. Also worthy of note is its involvement in naval construction, with two industry giants designing with FORAN: BAE Systems, in the UK, and Navantia, in Spain. Their programs, which are very long term and with highly restrictive demands, benefit from FORAN’s integration with PLM and the concurrent work capacity, which enables clients to operate from different production centers on the same projects lasting for years, and 2008: La draga Leiv Eiriksson, para Construcciones Navales del Norte, que es la mayor del mundo, con 46.000 m3 de capacidad. 2010: El nuevo portaviones de la Armada Británica HMS Queen Elizabeth, construido por BAE Systems. SENER noticias diciembre / December 2014 In next few months, FORAN will launch version 80 with state-of-theart developments and significant functionalities for the offshore sector, which is set to be a niche for growth in coming years. Living in a permanent future This versatility is achieved thanks to the exhaustive work of the FORAN team, which is made up of IT specialists, mathematicians, naval architects and marine engineers. They all work together to configure the system and implement improvements under two criteria. SOME RECENT OUTSTANDING WORKS INVOLVING FORAN: 1996: The Texaco Captain Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessel (FPSO) for Navantia, with a storage capacity of 550,000 barrels. This was a milestone in that it was the first vessel in which FORAN’s integration was successfully tested. 2008: Dredger Leiv Eiriksson for Construcciones Navales del Norte, the 2011: The Spring Aeloian vessel for Sanoyas, the largest PANAMAX class (dimensions adapted to cross the Panama Canal) bulk carrier in the world. 2014: The British nuclear submarine series Successor, also of BAE Systems, which is the largest engineering project in Europe in the last decade. The aformentioned projects of BAE Systems credit FORAN as one of the most significant software programs for naval shipbuilding in the world. Reportaje / Article The second path of evolution for FORAN consists of detecting and attending to demands that arise externally, which come from clients and users of the system. In this respect, SENER’s Ships Section is a key ally; as a privileged user of the software it test drives every improvement and is quick to provide first-hand knowledge of the reality in the sector. The combination of these viewpoints –the more strategic company vision and the more immediate market vision– come together in FORAN to make it the most complete CAD software available in shipbuilding. In its forecasts, FORAN is looking towards solutions that are increasingly global, such as turnkey projects, to meet the future demands of large construction companies. Other turnkey projects include the Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRU) designed by SENER. These offshore terminals connect SENER’s ample marine experience with its knowledge of regasification plants, civil marine construction and combined cycles. The longest standing software on the market The creation of FORAN was, to a certain extent, fated by the innovative spirit of SENER’s founders, brothers Enrique and José Manuel de Sendagorta. It was the 1960s and the dawn of the computer age, but SENER –purely a ship design office at the time– could not find computing tools to boost the efficiency of its projects. And so they decided to make them. FORAN started out as an endeavor almost solely driven by José Manuel de Sendagorta, a Doctor in Aeronautical Engineering who had studied Combustion Aerodynamics at the Spanish National Institute for Aerospace Technology (INTA). Applying this knowledge to the marine sector, he developed an interest in using mathematical formulas to represent the underwater hull in a system based on coordinated modules. In 1965, the first version was launched (for internal use only) under the name FORAN, an acronym of FORmas ANalíticas (ANalytic FORms). It was soon realized that this system could eventually be marketed and exported to other technical offices. With 50 years of active service, FORAN is the longest standing software on the market. It is also a technological asset for SENER, which has placed its trust in this project throughout its history as a hallmark of its identity. Pioneer in becoming international The first external client was secured in 1969, with version 4. This was the former Bazán, now part of the Navantia group. The British shipyard Vickers followed suit in 1973 and FORAN soon spread across Spain, Europe and the Soviet Union. At the end of the 1970s, it reached Argentina, and later on, in the 1990s, Brazil. Currently, FORAN is used in 30 countries around the world. Among the most significant clients are Navantia (Spain), BAE (UK), Sanoyas (Japan), UDIN (South Korea) and Severnoye DB (Russia). In Spain, it is the standard tool, being employed in almost all technical offices. It is also a benchmark system in Europe and is installed in shipyards in Latin America and in the United States and Canada. In recent years, FORAN has determinedly set foot in Asia, where SENER has opened offices in China, Japan and South Korea. Almost 90% of the world’s commercial shipbuilding is concentrated in these countries, which will be the main market for FORAN in the short term. SENER noticias diciembre / December 2014 9 Entrevista / Interview “FORAN ostenta el liderazgo tecnológico del mercado” “FORAN is the technological pioneer in this market” Entrevista con Rafael de Góngora, director general de Naval, y Rafael Martínez–Abarca, director de Operaciones de Naval. Interview with Rafael de Góngora, General Manager of the Marine unit at SENER, and Rafael Martínez-Abarca, Marine Operations Manager. F ORAN is the longest standing CAD/CAM/CAE software on the market, and also one of the most successful. What do you attribute that to? Rafael de Góngora: There are other systems that have been used for almost as long as FORAN, but they’ve changed both in name and ownership, gradually merging together, so nobody recognizes them as the systems they knew back in the 70s. FORAN is unique in that it has always kept the same name and the same developer. This is without doubt one of the reasons for its success; it’s made by a company that has never seen it as a financial asset, which it is, but rather as a technological asset, and that inspires trust in our customers. You assert that FORAN is the market leader when it comes to technology. What do you base this on? RG: Our track record speaks for itself: we were the first to launch a version with a single database, under Windows NT, through a relational database, the first to have software integrated in all disciplines... Historically, we’ve been pioneers in making technological strides with new functionalities and new characteristics. That’s technological leadership. SENER noticias diciembre / December 2014 11 Entrevista / Interview What are the greatest advantages of FORAN per se, and what sets it apart from other marine software on the market? RG: FORAN is the only shipbuilding system to be developed by a company that is also a ship design office, conceived to solve its own problems. This means that we speak the same language as the users and understand our customers’ problem areas. Rafael Martínez-Abarca: We’re the first users of FORAN and we’re from SENER’s own Ships Section, which performs marine engineering. That’s something the competition doesn’t have. RG: This has two advantages: first, that we ourselves test the program; and second, that we have firsthand knowledge of what the market requirements are. We don’t have to ask any customers about the latest design trends or the functionalities they need, because we have this information in our own backyard. Over the last 50 years, what range of ships have been designed and built using FORAN? RG: FORAN has been used to design and build all kinds of vessels, from fishing boats to merchant vessels, offshore platforms, warships and even sailboats. There’s no type of ship that hasn’t been made using FORAN. RMA: To give you an idea of its versatility, the same applications have been used to design and build ships of very different statures and with lengths ranging from 15 m to over 400 m. What have been the most outstanding innovations in the last five years with FORAN? RG: The most innovative development is the interface with PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) applications. To link a CAD with a third-party PLM 12 SENER noticias diciembre / December 2014 is a very significant breakthrough, and that capacity is only offered by FORAN. Another commendable innovation, although it may not be so apparent, is the revamping of all of the software, from the user interface to the data structure. RMA: The ability to work concurrently is also an important innovation. FORAN allows centers in different geographical locations to work simultaneously on the same database. Thanks to this, any changes made are immediately visible to everyone, thereby guaranteeing total integration in the design and preventing inconsistencies. SENER recently opened a new office in Manchester, motivated in large measure by marine contracts. What activities will be carried out from this office? RG: This office owes its presence to the contract with BAE Systems and the consequent use of FORAN in the design of the Queen Elizabeth Class (QEC) aircraft carriers and the new generation of submarines, our star project right now. Work on this scale requires a local presence. Manchester combines proximity to the customer with easy connections to SENER’s other marine customers in the UK. RMA: This project will span many years, as military agreements oblige the manufacturing shipyard to keep the same CAD system used in the design phase throughout the ship’s entire operational life. Because of this, with every contract you’re guaranteed the duration of the design, manufacturing and operational life of each one of the units. The first unit of the QEC aircraft carriers was recently launched in the water, but BAE is now getting started with the Successor series of the nuclear submarines project. These will also be designed using FORAN and will remain in operation for several decades. Delivery of the first unit is still years from now, meaning FORAN’s presence in BAE is assured for a considerable length of time. RG: And now in Glasgow, design is starting on a series of 15 frigates. It’s the third BAE project to be undertaken using FORAN. Delivery of the first of these frigates is forecast for 2021, meaning the system will have to remain active for much longer. What challenges exist in the Marine sector that FORAN must help surpass? RG: The main one is to achieve the much sought-after emergence in China, Japan and South Korea, where we’re making significant investments. RMA: The second challenge is to make a strong entry in the offshore industry, a sector where there is a great load work of engineering all around the world, and where FORAN can make a big difference. We’ve analyzed this market in minute detail, and we’ve come up with a plan that starts off with the inclusion of a good number of functionalities for this sector via FORAN version 80. How will you commemorate FORAN’s 50th anniversary? RG: We want to give FORAN the visibility it deserves. This celebration is a milestone for all of SENER. RMA: If Manu (José Manuel de Sendagorta) could see where FORAN is now –this project that he set in motion with such enthusiasm 50 years ago– he’d be very proud. We’ve been pioneers in making technological strides with new ” functionalities and characteristics. President of the Cotec Foundation for Technological Innovation. T he long financial crisis that we have suffered (the effects of which we continue to suffer today in Spain) has proven the unsustainability of an economic model based on speculation and activities that generate little value. This has prompted an urgent need to find a new growth model that puts innovation at the center of our economy, recognizing it as a key factor in creating value on the basis of knowledge. Fortunately, many Spanish companies –whether they operate in high-tech 14 SENER noticias diciembre / December 2014 industries such as aerospace, engineering, biotechnology and ICT, or in more traditional sectors– have realized that innovation is their greatest ally when it comes to survival in an increasingly demanding global market. In recent years, such companies have been capable of opening markets and growing, despite the severity of the crisis. These companies are the seeds of the new, modern production system that our country needs. However, at the moment this system comprises a mere drop in the ocean that is the Spanish economy and is barely visible to the public eye. According to the latest data collected in the 2014 Cotec Report on Technology and Innovation in Spain, there are less than 12,000 companies investing in R&D of which only 4,500 have R&D departments. And, although between them they generate a turnover equivalent to half of the Spanish GDP, their spending on R&D only amounts to 0.69% of the GDP, compared to the average of 1.22% in EU-28, 1.51% in China and 1.95% by companies in both Germany and the US. For the last 15 years, a huge amount of material and human resources have been dedicated to helping this new production system take root and grow. It is a system that has certainly moved on from the one which made the growth of our economy possible, with cumulative annual rates of more than 10% in both the public and private sectors. The main challenge we face now is to foster the necessary conditions to sustain it and make it grow as fast as possible. One of the most important activities that we have started at Cotec this year, and in which I have become involved with great enthusiasm since I was elected to chair the foundation last June, has been the development of “Spanish Innovation in 2020” report. This document, which is currently under discussion with the main agents of the Spanish innovation system, identifies the qualities that Spanish innovation needs to have in order to become the driving force behind our economy by 2020. In the document we emphasize that research must be more orientated towards business needs: one of the main challenges facing the new innovation system. We also identified some core weakness of the public R&D system, which suffers from a fundamental lack of management and professionalism in the transfer of technology, a lack of awareness by companies concerning the capability of the public R&D system to solve their problems, the small size of research groups, and a scarce number of senior researchers dedicated to transfer activities. With regards to companies, we aim to boost their growth. A huge part of the success of our medium and large-sized enterprises resides in their ability to innovate in a systematic way. Our smaller companies need to be able to grow in order to compete in a globalized world, and to do so we need to move forward with a financial system that understands innovation and allows companies to flourish. We also need to improve training and to incorporate more qualified profiles to increase their technological capacity; to promote the creation of technologybased companies; to place more emphasis on becoming international; to devise financing formats that lower financial risk and facilitate private investment in innovative projects; and to reduce administrative obstacles. These are complex challenges that require a long term and truly collective commitment from the public administration, the scientific community, universities and businesses. A commitment that enables us to clearly establish the objectives and time frames of the public and private actions necessary to strengthen our innovation system and correct its weaknesses. Only then will innovation become the true driving force in our economic and social development. Doctor Antonia Andreu poses with AUTOPLAK. T he Microbiology Laboratory of Vall d’Hebron University Hospital in Barcelona (Spain) has been using the AUTOPLAK automatic sample inoculation and streaking system for Petri dishes developed by NTE Healthcare for over a year. We are speaking with Dr. Antonia Andreu, Head of Automation in the Microbiology Laboratory, about the results the system has produced so far. Since it came into operation, what is your evaluation of AUTOPLAK’s performance in the laboratory? Antonia Andreu: We have been able to adapt the AUTOPLAK equipment perfectly to our processes with great ease. In turn, this has allowed us to increase the productivity of the streaking process for clinical samples that enter the laboratory, and also reduce the space required for this process. What is the main advantage of having introduced this system? A.A.: Without a doubt, the standardization in the streaking processes, the reproducibility of results and the perfect traceability it achieves. Thanks to the automation, a number of laboratory personnel have been freed up from tedious repetitive tasks, enabling them to dedicate their time to activities with greater added value. SENER, through its brand NTE Healthcare, has signed a collaboration framework agreement with Vall d’Hebron University Hospital to jointly develop projects for the improvement of bioengineering equipment and systems. SENER noticias diciembre / December 2014 19 Tecnología Sanitaria / Healhcare Technology Al día / Up-to-Date Aeronáutica y Vehículos / Aeronautics and Vehicles Al día / Up-to-Date How many samples did you process before introducing AUTOPLAK and how many do you process now? A.A.: Incorporating AUTOPLAK has been a major factor in the integration of primary healthcare laboratories Manso and Bon Pastor (both in Barcelona) with the laboratory at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital. With the new system we have gone from processing 2,160 urine cultures per month to more than 10,300. The new collaboration means we also do streaking on 1,180 stool cultures per month and 2,500 genital cultures. Are there any other processes in the microbiology laboratory that might be automated with AUTOPLAK? A.A.: The streaking and inoculation function performed by AUTOPLAK is only the first stage in the processing of samples at the microbiology laboratory. Other tasks that are currently done manually but appear to be candidates for automation would be the incubation and inspection of the Petri dishes, inoculation on the Mueller-Hinton agar, and the placing of antibiotic discs in order to perform the antibiogram in the disk diffusion method. I understand that NTE Healthcare is already working in this direction. Characteristics of the train The mountainous terrain and environmental conditions in which this network is being built present a major challenge; the result is a design where 92% of the track is either in tunnels or on viaducts. Altogether, the 57.8 km of the route comprises almost 49 km of viaducts and a 4.7 km twin tunnel with cross-tunnel connections every 240 m. The main characteristics are: a design speed of up to 160 kmph; 25,000 Vca; international gauge track; exclusively passenger traffic; and a journey time of 39 minutes that represents an average speed of 90 kmph including stops. This compares favorably to the highway, which averages 55 minutes by car and 2.5 hours by bus. Besides, it will have a ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) in level 2 signaling system, and an additional Assistance To Operation (ATO) system. The line will have six stations: Zinacantepec, Terminal de Autobuses, Metepec, Lerma, Santa Fe, and Observatorio — all of them at viaducts. Furthermore, the project encompasses the definition of the following systems: track, catenaries, traction substations and all of the intercity train systems, including equipment for signaling, ticketing and telecommunications in stations, service areas and storage areas, as well as rolling stock. LNG process Through a dual nitrogen expansion cycle, the liquefaction plant generates LNG at -160 °C and has a storage capacity of six days. In this liquid phase, the gas is loaded onto cryogenic transport tanks T his past September, the first test was conducted on the virtual pipeline that SENER is providing for the state-owned petrol company Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales using Tank Lorry Filling (TLF) and is delivered to 27 satellite regasification stations throughout the country. At these destinations, the LNG is put in storage tanks so it can then be distributed to the municipalities. To do this, the liquid goes through a regasification process in which rising temperatures convert it back into a gas. Next, the natural gas is odorized and connected to the pipe network destined for homes, industries with minor consumption, etc. This is what is known as household gas. This facility is of special importance since it is the first of its kind in Bolivia and will contribute to the promotion of natural gas as the main energy source for the country’s population. ENER has been awarded a contract for the simultaneous modernization of two hydrocarbon plants of Petroleum Development Oman LLC (PDO), the foremost exploration and production company in the Sultanate of Oman, and a reference company worldwide in the Oil&Gas market. It is a turnkey contract (EPC) that SENER will carry out in an horizontal consortium. Once modified, the plants will allow PDO to maximize the recovery of hydrocarbon condensates present in natural gas that is extracted from the wells. For SENER, the importance of this contract lies in the fact that it is its first in the strategic Oil&Gas sector in a country that has very significant hydrocarbon reserves, and for a client such as PDO, that executes a multitude of projects throughout the year. All told, this represents an opening in a market that is of considerable importance for the company. At the same time, SENER’s arrival in Oman reasserts the group’s presence in the Middle East. Currently it has offices in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar and is taking on projects there. Created in 2003, it is in a continuous process of improvement and inclusion of new features. SENSOL has been used for plant design in all the solar projects in which SENER has been involved to date, 25 in total, both with central tower and heliostat field and trough configuration, with 1,510 MWe installed (see table). Furthermore, SENSOL has been used as performance model or guarantee benchmark in most of them. One of the most remarkable features of SENSOL is a performance simulation model fine-tuned with real plants in commercial operation. This is especially important in the case of Gemasolar, the only operational molten salt central tower system in the world. The aiming strategy In central tower plants, the heliostat field aiming strategy controls in every moment the actuation of each heliostat, guaranteeing that the reflected radiation onto receiver surface is below its limits, maximizing at the same time the absorbed energy. This is a key aspect both for plant operation and receiver integrity, as pointing all the heliostats to the centre of the receiver would exceed its limits, thus producing a permanent damage. Heliostat field aiming strategy simulated in SENSOL has been applied in Gemasolar and checked during plant operation. This way, SENSOL can very accurately calculate the annual performance of any given molten salt central tower plant. In fact, not considering the actual field aiming strategy in the performance simulation will lead to overestimations in the range of 11% w.r.t. what can be obtained in real life, during plant operation. © BAE Systems Portaviones HMS Queen Elizabeth a flote. The initial challenge was to develop an early 3D model of the Hull Structure for the first Queen Elizabeth Class (QEC) ship during the Stage 1 of the design. Based on the success of this phase, BAE Submarines (Barrow), BAE Naval Ships (Glasgow) and later on Babcock (Rosyth) decided to carry MS Queen Elizabeth was floated out of the Babcock dock in Rosyth (UK). The aircraft carrier, the first of the Queen Elizabeth-class, was officially named by the Queen of Great Britain. Designed and built by BAE Systems, and assembled at Babcock, it is the biggest, and most powerful, surface warship ever to join the Royal Navy and capable of carrying up to 40 aircraft. BAE Systems selected in 2006 SENER’s CAD/CAM/CAE System FORAN as its tool for this important project. For SENER, the most important challenge was derived from the size and the complexity of the vessel together with the requirement to work in a multi-CAD and multi-site environment. Scalability, for both number of users and amount of data, and performance were also critical for the project: it was necessary to train a huge number of users (more than 1,000) as well as to provide on-site support from SENER to the main QEC design centres, as for BAE and for Babcock it was the first project developed with FORAN. As part of the implementation process, SENER was required to develop additional capabilities in FORAN like more powerful access control functionalities or specific manufacturing links (e.g. for NC profile cutting robots). The use of FORAN in the QEC has represented a step forward in the use of digital mock-up techniques in all disciplines and stages of the carrier’s design, with satisfactory results in both cost and schedule. T he world market of printed plastic film for packaging is very important and is growing at a fast rate. Very advanced films of PP, PE, PET and other polymers are used in this market. The printed films are used in various kinds of packaging for industrial or end products, such as Esquema de la futura planta de reciclado de plásticos. Scheme of the future plastic recycling plant. 40 SENER noticias diciembre / December 2014 bags, sacks or packs. The printing of film, to show brands, the characteristics of the contents, or instructions for their use or consumption, generates significant amounts of printed waste, while the machines are being adjusted and the plates changed. Recyclers buy this printed plastic waste and produce a dark, low quality, low price material since, at the moment, there are no industrial processes in the market that can deink plastic during recycling. As a result of the research of a group of scientists, Universidad de Alicante patented a deinking technology of plastic film waste in 2012, which has been used by OLAX 22, a spin-off of the “ A día de hoy, ésta es la única tecnología que permite el destintado durante el reciclado. Today, this is the only technology that can deink plastic during recicling. ” Impresion de plásticos en una instalación industrial. university, to develop a deinking process of plastic film waste on a small scale. They have obtained a recycled product that has similar properties to virgin polymer pellets manufactured by the petrochemical industry. SENER and OLAX 22 agreement Last May, the SENER group and OLAX 22 reached an agreement to jointly develop the process at a larger scale and to license the technology. This was formalized at the end of June in a 50% participation in the company CADEL Deinking, S.L. Previously, both companies had collaborated in a study to estimate the international market of the deinking technology. Recyclers and plastic film printers of Spain, Europe and other countries were contacted during this study, which showed that said market was very large and that there were many potential users interested. Meanwhile, SENER developed the preliminary basic engineering for an industrial recycling unit, estimated the investment budget for said unit and Printing of plastics in an industrial facility. prepared a business plan that indicated its economic attractiveness. The new technology has been presented at international conferences, and has generated considerable interest and demand for information. What is more, companies that have witnessed the deinking process live in the small scale experimental units of CADEL Deinking in Alicante (Spain) have shown a firm interest to use the technology. Agreement with THE UNIVERSITY In the month of September, CADEL Deinking and Universidad de Alicante signed an agreement that granted the company an exclusive license to develop the patent. CADEL Deinking has applied for an extension to the patent to cover the most important countries in the world, and started work developing and scaling up the process in its pilot plant in Alicante. This will allow CADEL Deinking to sublicense the technology to build and operate deinking recycling plants on a commercial scale after 2015. Gemasolar entró en operación en el 42 SENER noticias diciembre / December 2014 A person from Torresol O&M team carries out an inspection at Valle 1 and Valle 2. año 2010, y Valle 1 y Valle 2, en 2011. H ealth and Safety was chosen as a cornerstone for Torresol Energy when it first started out in 2008, and it has remained so since then. Alongside people, quality, and respect for the environment, safety constitutes one of the company’s four corporate values. Specifically, in its Commitment to Health and Safety, Torresol Energy’s Management explicitly establishes “excellence in Health and Safety as a priority and highly strategic objective in all our activities, from early planning through to the operating phase.” For this reason, Operation and Maintenance (O&M) work in plants share the same corporate culture. This is reflected in the group’s subsidiary that is in charge of this work, Torresol O&M, which team has registered zero accident record since operations began on the company’s three thermosolar plants. Gemasolar started operations in 2010, with Valle 1 and Valle 2 following suit in 2011. However, the preventive culture first extended itself long beforehand. From the earliest construction stages and in the coordination and tracking meetings of the projects, safety was meticulously dealt with first and foremost. As such, from the very beginning the company used the slogan Safety First to transmit the absolute priority of adherence to corporate safety protocols. In this sense, ever since beginning the construction works, Torresol Energy’s Management wanted to incorporate the industry’s best practice. For this reason, the safety procedures and management tools were designed from the start to gain certification under international specification OHSAS 18001:2007 (occupational health and safety) and international standard ISO 14001:2004 (environmental management systems). These were obtained in 2012 and 2013 in all of its plants and also in Torresol O&M. Additionally, tools and techniques were incorporated such as LOTO (Lock-Out, Tag-Out), a procedure for identifying and blocking de-energized systems which makes accidental reactivation impossible. Use of this system is widespread in high-risk industrial plants (e.g. refineries) and guarantees the maximum level of safety. Currently, Gemasolar, Valle 1 and Valle 2 operate through a system of issuing work permits, which is coordinated by the Operations team and the Health, Safety and Environment Manager, a first-level organization role filled at all of Torresol Energy’s plants. Besides, the Torresol O&M team receive training in health and safety, emergency response and environmental matters. This training is updated every year and complemented by periodic simulations (drills) in which the local emergency services at each plant usually collaborate (fire fighters department, law enforcement, emergency medical personnel, etc.). At the same time, the Management of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) carries out constant supervision, including regular meetings at different levels (at individual plants, throughout all of Torresol Energy, and also with external personnel working at the facilities). The Management endeavors to stay informed about the latest innovations and advances in the area of safety and environment, and to update and improve existing protocols. The overall goal is to maintain and prolong the zero accident record. Continual improvement is a premise that is actively sought after by Torresol Energy, as it allows the whole Operation and Maintenance team to prepare for and take on new challenges. In a similar vein, efforts are made to spread this culture of safety beyond the limits of Torresol Energy’s team of professionals. An HSE coordination protocol exists to involve all companies it works with. The aim is to instill the safety procedures in partners and suppliers, and, most importantly, in subcontractors who also operate at the facilities. This continual safety effort, both by Torresol Energy personnel and by external people who contribute daily to the operation and maintenance of its plants, has an invaluable reward: zero serious accidents since the start of operations. An excellent record that Torresol Energy intends to maintain... and improve. Estación de Seguridad de Torresol Energy. Torresol Energy’s Safety Station. Acoustic photo of a device with separate internal systems. S ENER has been deepening its knowledge on the analysis and evaluation of noise and vibration problems for over 15 years, culminating in the creation of the Acoustics and Vibrations discipline, made up of a team of experts in simulation and experimentation. There have been significant advances in this group’s capabilities thanks to the use of sophisticated prediction tools and the acquisition of testing equipment. Recently, the Acoustics and Vibrations group expanded its portfolio of services with new techniques, particularly: Near/far field acoustic mapping. SENER uses progressive acoustic measurement techniques, with latest generation sensors that enable on site testing and profiling of the acoustic properties of all kinds of products: vehicles and sub-systems (automobiles, aircraft, trains, etc.), industrial facilities (generators, turbines, transformers, etc.), commercial machines and devices (printers, home appliances, etc.), and even civil engineering works (enclosures, HVAC – Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning - facilities, partitions, etc.). The acoustic mapping solution is especially impressive; in minimal time it gives a graphic representation of the acoustic field—an ‘acoustic map’ or ‘acoustic photo’—, which helps considerably to locate the origin of the noise problem that needs solving. Expansion in structural testing capabilities. Similarly, SENER Acoustics and Vibrations group has also been adding to its experimental analysis equipment through the acquisition of new multi-channel systems and complementary sensors. Particularly worthy of mention is the use of solutions developed by LMS and based on LMS SCADA, a type of multi-channel data collection platform that allows for the 62 SENER noticias diciembre / December 2014 Prototipo del sistema de actuación para JPCAM. JPCAM actuator system prototype. use of an extensive range of sensors (accelerometers, microphones, pressure sensors, gauges, etc.), all with minimal instrument installation time. In addition to offering a quick solution for experimental evaluation in any situation with noise and vibration emissions, this tool has successfully been used to carry out structural checks on prototypes, including correlation with finite element predictive numeric models. Recently, this type of evaluation/correlation was applied in the space project JPCAM, where it was used in the high-precision actuator system, based on a hexapod mechanism for the real-time positioning of the panoramic camera installed in the Javalambre Survey Telescope. Static and dynamic loads observed on the prototype’s flexures were evaluated using strain gauges, and SENER’s Acoustics and Vibrations group’s structural testing capabilities were also used to carry out correlation tasks with the finite element predictive model. Specifically, SENER offers tests on a floating slab that isolates the object being measured from external vibrations. The anti-vibration slab weighs more than 50 tons and has a resonant frequency of less than 4 Hz. In addition, the group has developed an Alpha chamber, which enables evaluation of the acoustic transmission properties of any type of material (sandwich structure, composite materials, etc.) thanks to its adaptable samples system. The latest innovation is that it also has the capacity to evaluate acoustic absorption coefficients of any material by way of its reverberation chamber. www.sener.es Próximos eventos con participación de SENER Next events with SENER participation ENERO - ABRIL 2015 / JANUARY - APRIL 2015 Exhibición de Salud y Tecnología Sanitaria Arab Health 01/26-29/2015.
