REFLECT:
How strong is my own founda on in Scripture?
Consider this ques on in three dimensions: intellectual
strength (knowledge, understanding), spiritual strength
(prayer, virtue, contempla on), moral strength (decisionmaking, guidance for living).
ACT:
Make a commitment to read the Sunday readings, either
before or a er you go to Mass. Take me just to “be”
with the Word. Allow your own inner dialogue with God
to con nue beyond the celebra on.
PRAY:
Holy Spirit, breath of God, through Sacred Scripture you
reveal who you are, and who we are called to be.
Breathe on us. You enter the house of our worship and
speak lovingly to each of us. Help me to listen with my
whole hearts.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT
The second reading from Saint Paul to the Romans is a
favorite of those involved in the ministry of evangelizaon. There are no “secret” disciples of the Lord. Those
who exercise good stewardship of their faith realize that
publicly iden fying themselves as followers of Christ has
a cleansing effect on their lives. Openly confessing Christ
makes them more conscious of how they live their daily
lives. Are we content to priva ze our faith or are we
good stewards of a faith that we share, make public, and
regularly iden fy as a life in Christ?

A QUOTE FROM POPE FRANCIS
PARISH LIBRARY NOTES
On this first Sunday of Lent let me recommend some of
the DVD’s we have for this Season [264.1] – Celebra ng
the Seasons of Advent & Lent; The Church Celebrates
Lent & Easter; A Lenten Journey and Journey to Easter.
These DVD’s will give you a good start for your Lenten

Lent is tradi onally the season for Prayer, Fas ng and
Almsgiving- Carole Rogers has wri en a wonderful and
insigh ul li le book on Fas ng [264.1Rog];The Li le Book
of Biblical Jus ce- C. Marshall [259.7] gives a fresh approach to the underlying ra onale for alms-jus ce.
If you have some library items at home bring them back
so others can benefit from them.
BUILDING FUND CONTRIBUTIONS
Did you know that your contribu ons to our “Building
Fund” help us to establish a much needed reserve for the
MANY repairs and projects that are needed on our aging
buildings? Unlike the regular Sunday Collec on, which is
used to meet normal opera ng expenses, all Building
Fund dona ons are specifically designated for improvements, repairs and special projects. Contribu ons can be
made through your monthly envelopes, online at
www.sanluisreyparish.org or by contac ng our
bookkeeper, Elizabeth Rose, to set up an EFT dona on.
I think this is truly the most wonderful experience we
can have: to belong to a people walking, journeying
through history together with our Lord, who walks
among us! We are not alone; we do not walk alone. We
are part of the one flock of Christ that walks together.” The Church of Mercy
MENTAL HEALTH MINISTRY PRESENTS
"FINDING A PURPOSE IN LONELINESS"
Almost all of us have experienced the pain of loneliness. While we generally think of it as a nega ve and
unwanted thing, loneliness can actually be a gi in disguise. It signals that we need to take care of ourselves; it
can even be a way God gets us to look at new possibilies in our lives. What a perfect focus as we start a new
year! Come to an interac ve presenta on on Thursday
on Saturday, Feb. 27, at 10 a.m. in the parish dining
room. Everyone is welcome.
For more informa on about this workshop or about
any other mental health need, leave a message on the
Mental Health Ministry voicemail: 760-757-3250 x203.
We love because he first loved us.

Thoughts for the Year of Mercy
HUNGER FACTS – DID YOU KNOW
• 795 million people around the world, just over 1 in 9
people, are undernourished.
• Poor nutri on causes nearly half of the deaths in children under 5—more than 3 million children annually.
• Nearly half of the world’s popula on lives on less than
$2 dollars a day.
Imagine what it is like to live on less than $2 a day. Reflect for a moment on a typical living situa on for billions
of poor people in the world: First, imagine your living
room. Take away all the other rooms of your house. Your
whole family lives in this one room. Take out the furniture, except for a few blankets, a kitchen table and one
chair. Take away all the clothing, except one set of clothing for each member of the family and one pair of shoes.
Empty the pantry and refrigerator except for a small bag
of rice, some sugar and salt, and a few vegetables for
tonight’s dinner. Shut off the water in the bathroom and
remove the sink, the toilet and the electronic wiring.
Take away your TVs and cable, computer and internet,
etc. Look around your new home. That is how billions of
people live in the world today.
Our faith calls us to respond to the scandal of hunger. Pope Francis has asserted, “If there are children in
so many parts of the world who have nothing to eat, that
is not news, it seems normal. It cannot be so!” In James
2:14-16, James urges us, “What good is it, my brothers, if
someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can
that faith save him? If a brother or sister has nothing to
wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to
them, ‘Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,’ but you do
not give them the necessi es of the body, what good is
it?”
As we search for the spirit of the Lord and peace in our
hearts and our lives on our Lenten journey, St. Francis
suggested this path -- “all those who love the Lord with
their whole heart, soul and mind, with their whole
strength, love their neighbors as themselves. Happy and
blessed are these men and women while they do such
things and persevere in doing them, because the Spirit of
the Lord will rest upon them.” (1LtF 1:-7)
Today, may we
have the grace to
live conscious lives
of care and service
and so respond to
the scandal of hunger.

Año de la Misericordia
LA REALIDAD DEL HAMBRE - ¿Sabías tu?
•
•
•
Confesar a
No estamos solos; no caminamos solos.

NEWS FROM THE PARISH ADVISORY
BOARD ABOUT THE PARISH SURVEY:
BEING INVOLVED & CONNECTED
NOTICIAS DEL CONSEJO PARROQUIAL
SOBRE LA ENCUESTA PARROQUIAL:
ESTAR ACTIVO Y CONECTADO
The intent of the survey was for the Advisory
Board to listen – and learn. One important thing we
learned was that a great number of parishioners who
a end church on Sunday are involved and feel connected to the parish, in many different ways. There’s
no one best way, other than Mass & Sacraments, to
be connected to the Church. 34.6% find a ending
func ons as a way to be involved. A significant umber, 29% are not currently involved outside of Mass –
many of those falling into the age group that would
likely have small children at home.
