La ruta de la costa 3 recorre una distancia que va desde el Monumento Natural
del Tómbolo de Trafalgar hasta el núcleo urbano de Conil de la Frontera, e incluye las playas y torres vigías del litoral de los términos municipales de Barbate,
Vejer de la Frontera y Conil.
El recorrido por el litoral ofrece una interesante muestra de sistemas dunares
con vegetación característica y bellas panorámicas marinas en toda la línea de
costa. La ruta parte del cabo de Trafalgar –frente al cual tuvo lugar la emblemática batalla el 21 de octubre de 1805–, donde se encuentra el faro y una
antigua torre de almenara. Ambos están ubicados en un tómbolo declarado
Monumento Natural y que contiene interesantes yacimientos, como una factoría romana y un asentamiento hispano-musulmán. Esta lengua de arena separa
las ensenadas de Barbate y Conil de la Frontera; entre sus barras dunares
queda delimitada una antigua laguna costera casi colmatada de arena que con
las lluvias se rellena de agua salobre, albergando una importante variedad de
fauna y flora.
El itinerario se traza paralelo a la costa por una mota elevada, entre las urbanizaciones y las playas de Las Plumas y Zahora. Al llegar a la playa de Las Calderas
se vadea el arroyo de San Ambrosio o Zahora, que además hace de límite entre el
término municipal de Barbate y el de Vejer de la Frontera. Cuando la ruta alcanza
la magnífica playa de El Palmar y su barriada, en la punta Roque del Este (límite
de pleamar) se ubica la torre vigía Torre Nueva o de El Palmar. Esta torre formaba

parte de un interesante sistema defensivo del s. XIII promovido por Alonso Pérez
de Guzmán, “el Bueno”, aprovechando las ventajas de visibilidad que ofrecía su
estratégico emplazamiento costero. Estas atalayas o torres de almenara constituyeron así la línea defensiva del territorio. A continuación se alcanza el arroyo
Conilete, que hace de límite entre Vejer y Conil, dando acceso a la playa y el prado de Castilnovo, donde se encuentra la torre del mismo nombre. En este punto,
en el que se produce el contacto de la campiña con el litoral, la ruta se adentra
en tierras ganaderas y cruza el río Salado, para acceder a Conil de la Frontera. El
casco antiguo de Conil posee un entramado de calles estrechas y empinadas unido a un conjunto amurallado originario de principios del s. XVI que actualmente
conserva sus puertas y algunas torres; el pasado agrario y pesquero del pueblo
mantiene su fisonomía de casas encaladas y una configuración urbanística de
calles ortogonal a la costa.

Coastal route number 3 covers the stretch that goes from the Natural Monument
of the Tómbolo de Trafalgar to the urban centre of Conil de la Frontera, and
includes beaches and watchtowers along the coast of the municipal areas of
Barbate, Vejer de la Frontera and Conil.
The coastal route offers an interesting example of dune system with its characteristic vegetation and beautiful sea views along the coast line. The route starts in
Cape Trafalgar –offshore from which took place the famous sea battle on the 21st
October 1805–, with its lighthouse and an old beacon tower. Both are located
on a tombolo that has been declared Natural Monument and which contains interesting sites, such as a Roman factory and a Hispanic-Muslim settlement. This
sand spit breaks up the coves of Barbate and Conil de la Frontera; among its dune
bars there is an old coastal lake almost full of sand which fills with salty water
after periods of rain, being home to an important variety of fauna and flora.
The itinerary runs parallel to the coast on an elevated hill, among housing developments and the beaches of Las Plumas and Zahora. On reaching the beach of Las
Calderas it is necessary to wade across the stream of San Ambrosio or Zahora,

which also serves as the boundary between the municipal areas of Barbate and
Vejer de la Frontera. Then the route reaches the gorgeous beach of El Palmar
and its small settlement; on the point of Roque del Este (the limit of high tide) is
situated the watchtower of Torre Nueva, also known as El Palmar. This tower was
part of an interesting defensive system developed by Alonso Pérez de Guzmán,
‘el Bueno’, in the thirteenth century, making use of the wide-ranging visibility offered by its strategic coastal location. These watchtowers and beacon towers thus
constituted the defensive line of the territory. Next it’s the Conilete stream, which
makes up the limit between Vejer and Conil, providing access to the beach and
the pastures of Castilnovo, where a tower with the same name can be found. At
this point, in which the countryside makes contact with the coast, the route goes
into cattle pastures and crosses the Salado river to reach Conil de la Frontera.
The old part of Conil has a network of steep narrow streets along with city walls
dating from the beginning of the sixteenth century, on which presently the doors
and some towers still remain; also, the agricultural and fishing past of the village
has given it its typical appearance of white houses and an urban configuration of
streets at right angles to the coast.
