Ash Wednesday
March 5 is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. The purpose of this holy season is to prepare us, through penance and
conversion, to celebrate the Resurrection of Christ at Easter. Masses on Ash Wednesday will be celebrated in English at
8:25am and at 5:30pm, and in Spanish at 7:00pm.
On Ash Wednesday, Catholics ages 14 and above are required to abstain from eating meat. Animal flesh is not
consumed out of respect for Christ’s flesh, which was crucified for our salvation.
Catholics ages 18 to 59 are required to fast from the normal amount of food. When fasting, a person is
permitted to eat one full meal; two smaller meals may also be taken, but should not equal a full meal.
Catechumens
Congratulations to Emilio Hernández, Lizbeth Laguna, and Cody Willis, who became catechumens
(pronounced CA-TI-CUE-MENS) through the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens. The
term “catechumen” is derived from the Greek word eche (“echo” or “sound”) and means “hearer” of the
Word of God. A catechumen is an unbaptized person who has declared his or her intention to receive
Baptism (along with Confirmation and First Holy Communion). As a catechumen, one already belongs to
the Church, although the process of initiation is incomplete.
On the First Sunday of Lent, the catechumens of the parish will participate in the Rite of Election,
whereby Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo will “elect” (choose) them to receive the three Sacraments of
Christian Initiation at Easter: Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. Following the Rite of Election, the
catechumens will be known as the Church’s “Elect.” They will undergo special rites on the Third, Fourth,
and Fifth Sundays of Lent—the “Scrutinies”—in preparation for Baptism.
Discovering their Faith
Please keep our parish participants who are attending the Discovery retreat at Smith Mountain Lake 4-H Center this
weekend in your prayers. Participants are: Daniela Chacon-Salas, Angel Avelino, Manuel Zacharias, Audrey Manzano,
Hunter Crumpler, Cynthia Ramirez, Jose Amezaga-Mendoza, and Nashira Reyes. Also, please keep our local team
members in prayer: Liz Pineda, Sam Roche, Luis Avelino, Agustin Vazquez, Charles Crumpler, Becky Wales, Terrie Stone
and Katie Hall.

Collecting Palms
Palms that were blessed last year on Palm Sunday are now being collected in preparation for the beginning of Lent. The
palms will be burnt, and the ashes imposed on the forehead, on Ash Wednesday, March 5. Please deposit
the palms in the basket that has been placed in the commons.
The connection between Palm Sunday and Ash Wednesday highlights an important truth: We undertake
penance knowing that Christ has already conquered sin by his Passion, Death, and Resurrection. The Lord’s
victory is meant to be ours as well. The palm is a symbol of Christ’s victory, as we read in the Book of
Revelation: “After this I had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation,
race, people, and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and
holding palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice: ‘Salvation comes from our God, who is seated on the
throne, and from the Lamb.’” (7:9–10).
Christian Awakening
Attention 11th and 12th graders, Christian Awakening is fast approaching. It will be held in Fincastle, VA April 4–6. Please
keep our local team members in prayer as they prepare to serve the weekend: Nick Eckstein-Youth Coordinator, Lucero
Vazquez, Daniel Caccavelli, James Eckstein, Linda Hawker, and Eddie Dees.
Diocesan Youth Conference
Applications for the upcoming Diocesan Youth Conference (DYC) are still being accepted. DYC is being held at the
Richmond Convention Center March 14–16. Applications are available at Life Teen on Wednesday nights, at the parish
office, or bookstore after Mass on the weekends.
Oremus Study Program
Good news, you can overcome your difficulties with prayer, and it is easier than you might think. Sign up for the
OREMUS Study Program which will be held from Thursday February 20 to Thursday, April 10 from 6:00-7:00pm. Please
see the bulletin flyer and the promotional table in the parish commons. If you have questions, please contact Terrie Stone
at (434)792-9456, or [email protected]
Saturday Morning Retreat
Into Great Silence is a film that seeks to understand the lives of the Carthusian monks through their daily prayers, tasks,
rituals, and rare outdoor excursions. This film allows entrance into the monastic life rather than simply depict the
monastic life. Please join us Saturday, March 8 from 9:00am to 12:00N, as we take some time to enjoy the silence and
listen for God's quiet voice, while learning of the beauty and benefits of the monastic lifestyle. For more information or to
sign up, please contact Terrie Stone ([email protected]).
Roses are Red
It will now be possible to purchase flowers either for the altar ($50) or the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe
($25), in honor or in memory of someone. This noble custom makes the church beautiful and contributes to
the splendor of divine worship. (Please note that purchasing flowers in honor or in memory of someone is not
the same as a Mass intention, which applies the benefits of the Eucharistic Sacrifice to a specific person or
need.)
Racheal’s Vineyard Retreat
The retreat will be held March 28–30 at Shalom House Retreat Center, for women and men who have known regret,
sorrow, guilt or shame from abortion. Spend some time this Lent experiencing God’s great mercy. The weekend combines
living scripture meditations, spiritual exercises, and discussions in a guided process that leads to the heart of God’s love
and compassion. Please Contact Kay Marie Geiger, (804) 330-3137: [email protected] or Molly Smith at Richmond
Church of Epiphany (804) 794-0222 or you may view the website: www.rachelsvineyard.org
Join us for “A Mardi Gras Masquerade.” The event will
be held Saturday, March 1, from 6:00
to 10:00pm in the Holy Family Gym.
Tickets are $32.00 per person. Local
celebrity Chef Patrick Ruocco will be
preparing a New Orleans menu
featuring a recipe he prepared as a
contestant on Food Network’s
“Restaurant Express” TV show. The
event features live music by Third Stage, live and silent
auctions, and adult beverages. Babysitting will be provided by
8th grade students. Tickets may be purchased in the school
office.
El Vallarta Mexican Restaurant will donate 10 percent of
all sales on February 26 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm to the 8th
grade class for their spring trip. Advise the restaurant staff
you are supporting SHS!
8th grade is sponsoring a “ZUMBATHON” on Saturday,
March 8 from 10:00am-12:00pm led by Danya Zuniga. The
cost is $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Tickets may be
purchased in the school office.
To be eligible to apply for tuition assistance for the 2014–
15 school year, SHS parents must complete a FACTS form
online at www.factstuitionaid.com. The deadline is February
28.
The Sacred Heart School 2014 Annual Appeal is now
available. Copies are provided in the Commons area. Please
prayerfully consider your donation. Your gift will be an
investment in the school and community. Donations will be
accepted thru June 30, 2014.
Know of someone interested in providing a Catholic
education for their child/grandchild. Please encourage them
to visit our website at www.sheartschool.com for important
information about SHS.
MINISTERIO HISPANO

MORNING OFFERING TO THE SACRED HEART
O, God, I offer You all my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings in union with the Sacred Heart of Jesus, for the intentions for which He
pleads, and offers Himself in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, in thanksgiving for your favors, in reparation for my sins, and in humble
supplication for my temporal and eternal welfare, for the needs of our holy Mother the Church, for the conversion of sinners, and for the
relief of the poor souls in purgatory.
