Program Guide – April 2012 and May 2012
Schaumburg Township District Library ProgramGuide A P R I L - M AY 2 0 1 2 Join the Festivities! Celebrate National Library Week and Our Golden Anniversary This year’s National Library Week celebration will be double the fun, as we also celebrate the library’s 50th anniversary! Please join the festivities from Noon-3 p.m., Sunday, April 15. In the lobby, all ages are welcome to indulge in mini cupcakes created by Harper College’s Culinary School. Upstairs in the Rasmussen Room, children ages 12 and younger are invited to carnival games and face painters (we’ll have three to prevent long lines). But that’s not all! A wandering magician will be dazzling and entertaining from 1-2 p.m. amidst the games and face-painting. All ages are welcome to participate in a book walk (similar to a cake walk…but with books!), which will take place periodically in the Rasmussen Room. And still there’s more! Back by popular demand, Fast Eddie and the Corvettes will rock the Audiovisual Theatre from 1:30-3 p.m. with popular 1960s music to commemorate the founding of the library in 1962. This group plays a variety of tunes that filled the radio waves from the time John F. Kennedy was elected president to the year Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. If you’d rather just relax and enjoy a flick, come at 5 p.m. for The Music Man in the Audiovisual Theatre. This classic 1960s movie is appropriate for all ages. Each year, part of the National Library Week celebration includes a drawing to benefit a local charity. Come and see our display of hand-painted watering cans and pick up drawing tickets at the Check-in Desk for a chance to win one. The library is asking for a donation of 50 cents each for drawing tickets. All proceeds will be given to the Schaumburg Township Food Pantry. Remember the date: Sunday, April 15. Hope to see you there! Library Gears Programs Toward Readers and Writers Whether you prefer reading stories culled from a writer’s imagination, or creating such tales yourself, the library has programs, speakers and resources just for you. Within these pages you’ll find plenty of opportunities to share your reading and writing experiences, hear from authors or learn tips for improving your writing skills. Do you have stories in your head? Is there an author inside you, straining to break free? You can still catch the two remaining programs in our annual Inside Writing and Publishing series. Getting it Done: Plans, Goals and Models for Writers will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 4. Come and meet Allie Pleiter, author of numerous novels released by Harlequin’s Steeple Hill Press, as well as some parenting books published by Zondervan. Her latest, Falling for the Fireman, was just released in February. The last program in the Inside Writing series is Spoken Song, slated from 7-9 p.m.,Thursday, April 12. Music producer and singer-songwriter John Hegner of Starbell Hatchery Recording Studio will provide an interactive program for those with a creative flair. See details about both of these free programs on page 4. But that’s not all! Aspiring authors are invited to attend the Writer’s Group from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the first and third Saturday of each month. Share your ideas and experiences with others. Participants are encouraged to bring a page of their writing to be critiqued by others in the group. There is no fee to join, and no obligation, so stop by and see if this is the group for you. Love to read? If the answer is yes, and you also enjoy sharing your observations and opinions with fellow readers, consider joining one of our many book groups. Choices include American Cinema and Literature, Book Discussion, Polish or Korean Book Discussion, Eat,Chat, Read (which meets at local restaurants), and Second Floor Reads (our non-fiction book group). Details on each of these reading groups can be found on page 2. No matter which side of the page you prefer, the library has a group or program for you. Come and enhance your reading and writing experiences by sharing them with other like-minded spirits.
