OKEEHEELEE VILLAGE VOICE
Hello Warriors!
As we look to enter the Winter holidays, we know that we have been exceedingly
busy for the first semester of this school year. Just when it seems that we are
getting used to some of the mandates that come from our State Department of
Education in Tallahassee, we are given other changes.
Among the changes for this school year is the fact that we are testing our students
more than before, if you can believe it! In addition to the FCAT in the Spring, we
are also administering the Diagnostic tests which imitate the FCAT test and serve to
give our students practice for the high-stakes exam. We also administer SRI
(reading) testing and the FAIR (more reading) test.
If your child is enrolled in the high school credit Algebra 1 Honors or Geometry
Honors courses, he/she will be taking a test call the End Of Course (EOC) exam.
This is an exam which is given all over Florida and your child MUST pass this test in
order to get credit for it.

Sound like too many tests? Maybe it is. It has gotten to the point that our teachers
feel that we mostly prepare for one test or another rather than teach important
information that our students can put to use every day.
One of the new things we are doing at our school is our "houses". These house are
a smaller grouping of our students in order to increase student engagement and
interest in school. We just completed our first House Competition and are preparing
for at least two more before the school year ends. Ask your child about it!
Do you want your child to do well in school? Then spend time with him or her. No
matter what your child may say, your child wants to be with you, to watch how you
handle things, to observe what a grownup must do to be an adult. And it does not
have to be some expensive activity, either. Just doing chores around the house,
working on a project, or quietly being in the same place makes a difference.
Remember: the most important influence for a child is the parent!
All the best,
David Samore, Ed.D.

Tips for Better Math Grades
Attend class daily, bring all
materials and complete all
assignments.
Organize your time. Do all
assignments the day they are
assigned.
Before beginning a new assignment,
review the topics and homework
discussed in class that day, review
the new notes, and read the
section(s) in the textbook.
Study for a test or quiz by giving
yourself a "quiz" by redoing
problems.
Find a "study buddy". Exchange
phone numbers.
Tutoring: Monday - Wednesday Thursday
7:30 to 8:30am in Room 196
The Okeeheelee Garden Club is now
working to expand and beautify the
butterfly garden located in the courtyard of
our school. Students cleared debris and
weeded the garden last week. Plans are
underway to add new foliage. Students are
learning about the different variety of plants
that attract butterflies and how to grow and
care for exotic plants. This week we will be
hanging orchids in the garden. Everyone is
encouraged to stop by the garden. We are
seeking donations in the form or plants,
trees, cuttings and advice to help the garden
along. Special thanks to the club members
for their hard work in the clean up: Jean
Jasme, Zoe Clark, Ilisha Strassler, Tatiana
Benvenuto, Conner Moniger and Maynor
Janes.

OCMS Commemorates the 10th Anniversary of September 11th
It's been a decade since the horrific terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Many Americans
participated in ceremonies to honor the many lives lost on that day and since then. Likewise, Okeeheelee
Middle School took part in the remembrance of September 11th
with the cooperation between all OCMS students and the Art
department. Using 3,000+ paper cups, each student selected
the name of two September 11th victims and wrote these names
on the bottom of each cup. The cups were then given to the Art
department, where they were painted and assembled to display
a symbolic message of patriotism.
It read:
9/11 OCMS United We Stand
Along with the message the New York skyline
was constructed showing the Twin Towers.
Meanwhile, special videos were aired by Mrs.
Greene that included reflections from various
faculty members of OCMS.
The entire Social Studies department wants
to thank Mrs. Santiago and Mrs. Greene for
their hard work and assistance to make this
commemorian possible.
