Descripción de la asignatura 3.1. Presentación Esta asignatura trata del uso del inglés en un entorno de ingeniería. Está diseñada para mejorar las habilidades de comunicación y conocimiento del lenguaje especializado de los estudiantes de ingeniería. Con un énfasis especial en vocabulario técnico y habilidades del lenguaje como la comprensión oral y escrita, cubre temas comunes a diferentes campos de la ingeniería, tales como las propiedades de materiales, los casos de problem-solving, el dibujo técnico o las técnicas de fabricación. También se incluyen actividades reales basadas en contextos cotidianos de ingeniería, así como variadas ocasiones para el autoaprendizaje. 3.2. Ubicación en el plan de estudios Segundo curso, segundo cuatrimestre. 3.3. Descripción de la asignatura. Adecuación al perfil profesional La asignatura se incluye en los descriptores del inglés profesional y académico (IPA) o inglés para fines específicos (IFE), especialmente diseñados para perfiles profesionales determinados (en este caso, de ingeniería). 3.4. Relación con otras asignaturas. Prerrequisitos y recomendaciones La asignatura está diseñada para favorecer la transición del nivel B1 al B2 del European Language Passport, así que se presupone un nivel mínimo de B1. Aquellos que no posean los conocimientos mínimos requeridos tendrán que procurárselos por su cuenta. 3.5. Medidas especiales previstas Ninguna. 4. Competencias 4.1. Objetivos generales / competencias específicas del título (según el plan de estudios) -Dominar las principales funciones lingüísticas del lenguaje en contextos técnicos: describir, comparar, explicar procesos y funcionamientos, resolver problemas, ilustrar, categorizar, medir, interpretar. -Conocer y usar con corrección las expresiones con las que se realizan las funciones antedichas: conectores, comparativos, relativos, verbos de acción, preposiciones, unidades de medida, adverbios de matización, etc. 4.4. Resultados esperados del aprendizaje Que el alumno se haya familiarizado con el vocabulario técnico de su especialidad; que conozca y use con relativa facilidad las funciones del lenguaje asociadas al contexto técnico y profesional de su especialidad; que sea capaz de trabajar tanto en grupo como de forma autónoma, auxiliado por herramientas de autoaprendizaje. 5. Contenidos 5.1. Contenidos (según el plan de estudios) Unit 1 -Vocabulary: prefixes and suffixes. -Listening: preparing for a lecture. -Speaking: commenting lecture notes. Unit 2 -Vocabulary: headwords, definitions, parts of speech. -Reading: using topic sentences to get an overview of the text. -Writing: summarizing a text. Unit 3 -Vocabulary: stress patterns in multi-syllable words. -Listening: using different information sources. -Speaking: reporting research findings / summarizing a text. Unit 4 -Vocabulary: computer jargon, abbreviations and acronyms. -Reading: evaluating internet searching results. -Writing: reporting research findings. Unit 5 -Vocabulary: word sets: synonyms, antonyms. -Listening: understanding signpost language in lectures. -Speaking: making effective contributions to a seminar. Unit 6 -Vocabulary: sentence-level paraphrasing. -Reading: locating key information in complex sentences. -Writing: writing complex sentences. Unit 7 -Vocabulary: compound nouns / fixed phrases from mechanical engineering -Listening: understanding speaker emphasis. -Speaking: asking for clarification. Evaluación 7.1. Técnicas de evaluación Instrumentos A theory writing test. (35%) A group oral interview. (35%) Practice sessions: a listening comprehension exercise. (30%) Realización / criterios Students will be required to answer some questions related to all the subject blocks. Each answer must be answered with 25 words approximately (1-2 sentences) Besides they will have to show their use of grammar Students will hold a 10-15 minute discussion, similar to the ones held in the class sessions, about a subject topic of their choice. The teacher may also ask general questions about other subject blocks. Groups will be formed by 3 or 4 students. Students will complete one of the listening comprehension exercises which they will have previously dealt with in the practice sessions. BESIDES, STUDENTS MUST DELIVER A PRINTED DOCUMENT WITH THE COMPLETED EXERCISES OF THE PRACTICE SESSIONS THE DAY OF THE EXAM.
