Postdoc on Arundo donax metabolic engineering
Arundo donax is a promising non model crop for biomass and bioethanol production from marginal lands in the Mediterranean area.
The project aims at (1) the development of genetic and genomic resources for this non model species by next generation sequencing,
(2) the characterization of selected biosynthetic pathways for isoprenoids production, (3) the manipulation of Arundo donax volatile
organic compound emissions and (4) the characterization of photosynthetic performance, secondary metabolism and stress tolerance.
DUTIES: Preparation of constructs and their transformation in Arundo. Experimental setup and data mining of next generation
sequencing RNA-Seq data for the characterization with statistical methods of gene expression in Arundo key metabolic pathways.
Data mining by homology and gene ontology searches. Phylogenetic and molecular evolution comparative studies. Characterization of
Arundo and other high emitting species in terms of volatile organic compound production, photosynthetic performance and stress
tolerance. Reporting, dissemination of results, manuscript preparation. Supervision of PhD students. REQUIREMENTS: Post-Doc
(preferred at least 2 years of experience). PhD in biology, biotechnology, agriculture or corresponding. Strong preference will be given
to candidates with hands-on experience on molecular approaches for the modification of plant metabolism. Experience with molecular
biology skills (DNA extraction, PCR, cDNA synthesis, RT-PCR, cloning, etc) and plant transformation are required. Basic knowledge
about metabolic analyses and stress physiology is required. Hands on experience with next generation sequencing/metabolome data
analysis is highly appreciated. Proficiency with software for the analysis of large volumes of data, in particular RNA-Seq and
metbolome analyses is highly preferred. Data mining by homology searches, biosynthetic pathway analyses. Advanced expertise with
MS Excel and Word. Perl scripting and R programming highly appreciated. Ability to work in team and supervise PhD students. Good
