Overview
¡Bienvenidos! Welcome to Spanish 111, the first semester in UNR’s Basic Spanish Language Program
where you will cover up to Chapter 6 of Puntos de partida, 9th edition. What follows is basic
information about the course, information that you should understand thoroughly. This course is
for students who have had no prior experience with Spanish. Students who have studied Spanish
before coming to UNR and want to continue must take the online placement exam. Refer to:

help you review. Instructions on accessing Connect Spanish will be provided to you
by your instructor.

Course Goals
There are various goals of Spanish 111. The first is to develop basic communicative skills in Spanish as
a second language. These include, but are not limited to, the following sample abilities:
• describing yourself and your extended and immediate family
• talking about time, days of the week, seasons of the year, and the weather
• describing university life and shopping experiences
• talking about events in the present and planned future events
• discussing likes and dislikes
A second objective is to acquire basic knowledge about cultural differences between the U.S. and the
Spanish-speaking world. Some examples are:
• geography and culture of the U.S., Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and
Costa Rica
• differences in daily schedules, shopping and dressing, living accommodations, student life, and
family activities/roles.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
As a means of assessing for success in this course, the student will focus upon the following objectives:
1. Describe yourself and your extended and immediate family
2. Talk about time, days of the week, seasons of the year, the weather, likes and dislikes
3. Describe university life and shopping experiences
4. Produce written and spoken dialogue in the present and planned future.
5. Articulate in writing your understanding of significant dialectical variants of the Spanish
language.
6. Identify geography and culture of selected Spanish-speaking countries.
7. Compare U.S. and Hispanic/Latin cultures in regards to daily schedules, shopping and dressing,
living accommodations, student life, and family activities/roles.
