Welcome to Spanish 211, the third semester that follows 111 and 112 in UNR’s Basic Spanish Language Program where you will cover Chapters 12, 13, 15, 16 & 18 of Puntos de Partida, 9th edition. What follows is basic information about the course, information that you should understand thoroughly. This course is for students who have taken SPAN 111 and SPAN 112 at UNR. Students who have studied Spanish before coming to UNR and want to continue must take the online placement exam. The first is to develop some basic communicative skills in Spanish as a second language. These include, but are not limited to, the following abilities: • to give directions and orders • to express what you have done • talking about feelings and uncertainty • talking about your wishes and desires • expressing hypothetical events A second objective is to develop some rudimentary knowledge about cultural differences between the United States and the Spanish-speaking world. Some examples are: • geography and culture of Columbia, El Ecuador, Bolivia, La Argentina, el Uruguay, el Paraguay, and Spain. • differences in technology, the arts, living in the country, automobiles, sentimental relationships, stages of life, and how news and the government function. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) As a means of assessing for success in this course, the student will focus upon the following objectives: 1. Give directions and orders. 2. Talk about feelings and uncertainty. 3. Discuss wishes and desires. 4. Express hypothetical events. 5. Produce written and spoken dialogue about past experience. 6. Identify geography and culture of selected Spanish-speaking countries. 7. Compare U.S. and Hispanic/Latin cultures in regards to technology, the arts, living in the country, automobiles, sentimental relationships, stages of life, and how news and the government function.
