Verb Conjugation in The Present Tense
LESSON 3 – Reflexive Verbs (The ‘SE’ verbs)
With REFLEXIVE VERBS
THE SUBJECT (Doer) DOES THE ACTION to himself.
(The action reflects back to himself).
You can know a reflexive verb by its VerbName.
It always has ‘se’ attached to the end of the VerbName.
EXAMPLES:

Sentarse:

llamarse:
to get up (to lift up oneself)
to sit (oneself) down
to stop (oneself)
to call oneself

CAREFUL!
Some verbs have two meanings: as a reflexive, and as a non-reflexive:
NON-REFLEXIVE (NORMAL)
Llamar (to call)
REFLEXIVE
llamarse (to call oneself)
Yo llamo a la policía.
(I call the police.)
Yo me llamo…
(I call myself…/My name is….)
Yo llamo a Sally por teléfono
(I call Sally on the phone.)
Yo me llamo Sally.
(I call myself Sally/My name is Sally.)
Levantar (to lift up)
Él levanta el libro.
(He lifts up the book.)
levantarse ( to lift up oneself/to get up)
Él se levanta.
(He gets up.)

With reflexive verbs, write the subjects as follows:

Vosotros os
(I…myself)
(You…yourself)
(You… yourself)
(He…himself)
(She…herself)
(You… yourselves)
(They…themselves)
(They…themselves)
(We…ourselves)
(You… yourselves)
Each case indicates that the subject is doing something to /for himself, herself, etc.
You will note that ‘se’ has several translations, depending on the subject it appears with:
(’SE’ is used with Vd./él/ella; Vds./ellos/ellas; and with the VerbName)
SE:
yourself (Vd.), himself, herself, yourselves (Vds.), themselves, oneself (VerbName),
