September and October is a blur for
me due to several archdiocesan
priest events, the annual convention
for my other job as Vocation Director, and the annual priests’ retreat.
My work as Vocation Director will
have me out of town from September 12-20 for the annual convention
of the National Conference of DiFr. Stephen
ocesan Vocation Directors
Hamilton
(NCDVD). It is an excellent conference. I count myself fortunate that this work in vocations allows me to interact with some of the finest
priests, religious men & women, and lay faithful I have
ever met. I ask for your prayers while I am away for
this convention. The convention will be more work
this year because our region of the country is hosting
it, meaning that all vocation directors in the region
Peru Potluck is Sept. 8
The potluck will be on Sunday, Sept. 8, from 1:30 to
3:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. While eating, you will be
able to watch a video show of mission teams helping
this summer in the parish of Santisimo Sacramento in
Piura, Peru. Fr. Joe Uhen, pastor, and two of his staff
will talk about what our joint efforts are doing to
build and strengthen our Catholic communities. If you
sponsor a family there you can get your letters translated during the luncheon.
Sponsors of families in Peru, other supporters, and
anyone who wants to learn more about this ministry
are invited. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Lesley Dunlevy at 341-7947 or [email protected]. The
potluck is free, but those attending are asked to bring
a side dish or dessert to share.
Baptismal Class
A Baptismal Class will be held Wednesday, Sept. 18,
at 7 p.m. in the Holy Innocents Room. To have your
baby baptized, one must be an active member at St.
Monica for six months. Also those who want to be
Godparents must be active Catholics and attend the
class.
For more information and to register, contact the
Parish Office at 359-2700.
(Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas) have various tasks to
accomplish to make the national convention successful. As always, pray for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life from our parish and from
within your very family. Two of the most important things a parent can do to promote priestly
and religious vocations are: (1) Live fully and
without compromise what it means to be
Catholic in your own vocation; and, (2) Say
something positive to your son about the
priesthood and to your daughter about religious life! I count on your gift of prayer to assist me in the work of Vocation Director.
Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Stephen Hamilton

religiosos, religiosas, y laicos que he conocido.
Padre Hamilton

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
In the midst of the Great Recession many construction plans were abandoned. Back in February, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis released a report analyzing the effect of the restrained construction environment on the economy. From a peak of 400,000
housing starts per quarter to just over 100,000 in the
final quarter of 2012, the total industry (construction
and real estate), which once accounted for ten million
jobs, lost 2.5 million of its workers over five years.
Data used by the Fed showed that employment was
on a growth trend if you excluded the construction
industry. Add that industry into the picture, and employment in the past few years continues its downward march. The report also points to the fact that
construction has a large indirect effect on the economy as well, since more building increases demand for
things like furniture and banking and legal services.
In the Gospel this weekend, Jesus uses the example
of calculating the cost to build a tower as a way of
inviting those who heard him to consider what it
means to become one of his followers. The life of the
Gospel is more than just a quick acceptance of Jesus
into one's life. There are costs associated with becoming a disciple. Jesus puts it rather bluntly at the
end of this week's text when he states, "Anyone of
you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot
be my disciple."
The Great Recession certainly saw many people losing all of their possessions. Jobs were lost, retirement
savings were used up, homes were foreclosed, and
plans for college were abandoned. But this kind of imposed loss is not what Jesus is speaking of. He is inviting those who have-and there are still many of us that
fall into that category-to not become overly attached
to all of our possessions. Love of material things can
keep us from seeing Christ, most especially from seeing Christ in our brothers and sisters in need.
Attention High School Girls
We are looking for leaders who want to:
GROW in their friendship with Christ,

40 Days for Life Campaign Kicks off Sept. 26
Rally -- “We truly hope that this fall’s 40 Days for
Life campaign will mark the beginning of the end of
abortion in Oklahoma,” said Debby Krisch, who coordinates the local 40 Days for Life effort. “The pro-life
community will join together for our area’s 40 Days
for Life kickoff event at The Connor Center 3214 N
Lake in Oklahoma City at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept.
26. The speakers for the evening will be Archbishop
Paul S. Coakley, Heidi Wilburn for the Baptist Convention and Karen Herzog from “And Then There
Were None.”
Oklahoma City is one of the many cities from coast
to coast conducting simultaneous 40 Days for Life
campaigns from September 25 through November 3.
We start this effort by drawing members of the community together to share the vision of 40 Days for
Life and to pray for God’s blessings on this effort. It is
time to focus attention on the harm abortion has
done to our city and our world.
This rally will begin 40 days of prayer and fasting,
with special attention to prayer in the public right-ofway outside the abortion facility at 6112 NW 63,
Oklahoma City, as well as various types of community
outreach. For more information contact; Debby
Krisch at 824-5578 / [email protected] or
