Con mucho amor, tus pastores: Daniel y Susana Venturini 28 with people who are in an adult age and even in some young people, ages 23 to 25 and above). There are plenty of cases of courtships that have left at three or more years and then end up finally broken with much frustration left over. If a couple is truly Christian and they want to stay pure until matrimony, we recommend a relatively short courtship. We recommend this time period so that the courtship is such that it has a sufficient amount of time for the couple to get to know each other and to make their plans. Some Final Words: As a young Christian, you have the opportunity to begin and to maintain a relationship that is different from the rest of the world; a pure relationship that is honest, responsible and Christian in every sense of the word. This is a relationship that is truly happy and satisfying. This is a relationship that is formed inside the will of God and which assures you a beautiful future. This is a relationship that would lead to a family that God has dreamed for you. It does not matter whether your parent’s marriage was not a good example. But you have the opportunity in your own hands to form a family that is different. Don’t lose this opportunity. Take advantage of it. Always prepare yourself in mind, in body, in soul and above all in spirit until God gives you the partner of your life. There will never be somebody who is perfect or ideal, but the person that God has chosen for you is the best. Search and follow the will of God for your life. With love, your pastors: Daniel and Susana Venturini El noviazgo cristiano, desde la perspectiva bíblica pastoral DEDICATORIA Dedicamos este escrito a nuestros hijos Pablo y Lucas. 6 El noviazgo cristiano, desde la perspectiva bíblica pastoral “ “ Give your relationship during the courting years to the Lord and serve him together. It is a beautiful experience when this happens. My wife and I have personally lived this and we wish that our children will also experience this. It is the firmest foundation for beginning to form a family that will stay together strong in the middle of adversity. “ Do not separate yourself from your healthy relationships outside of a young couple relationship. Maintain a strong relationship with your parents, groups of friends, brothers in Christ, and your family in general. Share with them the beginning of a relationship and throughout. This will help you have a healthy relationship. “ Have a spiritual covering. Make sure you share with your pastors your intention to become boyfriend and girlfriend in order to ask for advice, and for prayer, since they are your spiritual leaders who can guide you and give you advice. Once you are dating, stay under the spiritual covering of God. A relationship that is under a spiritual covering of God and of your pastor’s church and family will be protected, guarded, blessed and will have a much smaller probability of ending poorly. Who wouldn’t want to begin and to continue in such a relationship as this? It is not recommended that you have “ a long courtship before marriage (especially The christian engagement, from the biblical pastoral perspective 27 El Noviazgo The Engagement una nueva oportunidad de comenzar otra vez, haciendo las cosas bien, como el quiere. No te conviene. “ 26 Resolve that your courting years be a strong foundation that will support your future home with your partner, and that ultimately these years will be an example for others to imitate. Young woman I say to you: Do not allow your boyfriend, believer or not, to convince you to have sexual relations. Do not allow him to seduce you or pressure you. If he does this, he does not love you. Love respects the other partner and knows that it must wait. In 1 Corinthians 13:5 it says “Love does nothing that is indiscrete. It does not search for itself only.” A Little Advice For Young Couples: “ Converse frequently and come to know what your partner thinks in many areas of life. Make plans for the future. Above all talk, talk, talk. “ Pray together and read the word of God together. Talk about the things of the Lord. It is much harder to fall to sin and temptation when we do this. “ Speak about all of these topics written above and make it a contract of purity between each other that will last up until the time of m a rriage. Submit yourselves to the Holy Spirit, so that he can give you control of these issues. “ Visit things that you are both interested in and come to know each others’ parents well as well as all of each others’ families. After one’s decision to follow Christ, the most important decision a young person has to make in life is with whom they will get married. For this reason, there is a period of time that is both important and beautiful which we call “dating”. To say the word dating or courting brings forth all kinds of different responses and reactions. Many of us have good memories of our dating life: happiness, dreams of the future, romanticism and periods we were going out. Others may not have these same memories perhaps related to bad experiences or simply because they never went through these experiences that are so important prior to matrimony. What are your thoughts about courting? As a Christian do you believe and do the same things as the majority of people or do you do those things which are based on the Word of God? Is it possible that as parents and pastors we have forgotten and have placed less importance on that time period prior to matrimony called courting? Is it possible that we have begun to accept what the rest of the world considers normal and perhaps lost the meaning of that very special time period prior to matrimony that we called courting? In previous times, the way in which a young man and woman initiated their relationship as boyfriend and girlfriend in their courting years was very different to that which we are accustomed to in this day and age. In previous times, the parents were The christian engagement, from the biblical pastoral perspective 7 El Noviazgo The Engagement los arreglos. Young people did not have the opportunity to choose who would be their partners in the future. Even in this day and age, there are cultures which continue to do this and in which these customs continue to exist. This may seem strange. What a relief it is that we have the liberty to choose now who our partner will be. But with this liberty comes a great amount of responsibility. Knowing who to choose in the correct fashion and to know how to have an appropriate relationship in those courting years in the way that pleases God is a major responsibility. In this day and age, in lots of our churches much is discussed with potential married couples but very little is spoken about that initial period prior to marriage and its importance in relation to our relationship with God. For this reason, we wanted to take this opportunity as pastors of our church to create this written article that we hope will be of great blessing and help to open the eyes of a lot of young adults in our church. The courting years are the beginning of an entire life together. We could define it as that period in which a man and a woman decide to come to know each other more with the idea that they will be committing to one another one day and getting married. In 1 Corinthians ch. 6 v. 12 it says “All things to me are permissible but not all things are good for me. All things to me are permissible but I will not allow these things to dominate me.” In 1 Corinthians 6:18 it says “Flee from fornication”. Every other sin of man committed by man is outside the body; but he who fornicates against his own body, he sins”. It says in 1 Corinthians 3:16 “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Holy Spirit lives in you?” Read also Galatians ch. 5 v. 16 through 19 and Ephesians ch. 5 v. 1 through 3 as well as 1 Corinthians ch. 7 v. 2 and 9. And What Happens If You Have Already Done It? You can be restored if in reality you have truly repented and you come to the Lord searching for His forgiveness. There is nothing that the Lord cannot or does not wish to forgive, and having fallen is no reason that your life should be destroyed. Read in Psalm 51 in order to fully understand the heart of King David. The Lord can do something that is new in you; he can give you a new opportunity to begin again, and to do things well as he wishes. God is good and He is the God of opportunity and new beginnings. “I do not condemn you, go and sin no more.” This is a quotation which the Lord said to the adulterous woman when they were about to stone her. The dating years must be a relationship that blesses you. If the other person does not bless you and does not elevate you and help you grow as a person and as a Christian, then this person is not for you. Allow Jesus to be in the middle of the relationship during your courting years. The christian engagement, from the biblical pastoral perspective 25 El Noviazgo Cuando las caricias “intimas comienzan, habrá urgencia por terminarlas en el acto sexual.” The Engagement ¿Cómo evitar la tentación? La atracción física entre un hombre y una 24 Avoid being alone at home or in other places for a long time and learn to say no and to put on the brakes at the point of physical contact. We believe that the great majority of the responsibility for this belongs to the woman. A woman must know that for a man it is much more difficult because of the way he was created by God. Too much petting and touching makes things much more difficult for your boyfriend than it does for you as the girlfriend. One must remember that intimate physical affection is the first stage of a sexual relationship. So for this reason, one must remember that in caressing or petting one is really in the beginnings of a sexual act even though it is not consummated. These acts also alter the emotional system and when they cannot be consummated and completed, they often produce irritation and frustration. Affectionate caressing and touching in an intimate way may cause urgency in wishing to finish in a sexual act. As one reaches a higher point, the situation becomes more difficult to stop. Physical attraction between a man and a woman is natural and created by God. There is no reason to feel guilty for this, but precisely because of this, we must be responsible. Because there is a strong attraction and a lot of time spent together each day, it is even more necessary to be careful to avoid temptation and to control one’s instincts. It was once said “Sacrificing a momentary satisfaction in the short run for the sake of a long term satisfaction that lasts is a sign of maturity.” Remember, that which is physical is not the most important thing. “The courting years are not consumed in and of themselves but rather point towards a future goal of consummation which is called matrimony” (Day of the Weddings, by Pablo Deiros). With regard to the issue of the formation of a couple, there are certain issues which are cultural and others which are opinions related to basic common sense; for example: the age at which one can become a boyfriend or girlfriend, the difference between the age of one partner and the other, the length at which the courting years should last etc. On a lot of these issues, we as pastors can give advice. This advice may be based on either common sense or cultural issues, but the root of teaching must be based on the Word of the Lord. As Christians, we must base all of our decisions on the Word of God. We can not live based on our own opinion or based on what we think is best or what our culture considers best or what is in fashion at the time, but rather we live in conformity with the will of God. If we say that we are disciples of Christ and we want to follow him in everything, then we must be disciples with regard to this issue that is so important as well. We believe that this is the most important point that we must clarify from the beginning. The question is: what does the Word of God say with regard to the courting years? In reality this concept appears not to exist in the bible. The bible speaks to us about the formation of a couple, the matrimonial commitment and marriage itself. The bible relates to us The christian engagement, from the biblical pastoral perspective 9 El Noviazgo The Engagement Quien no tuvo la oportunidad de escoger fue Isaac, pero Dios escogió por él. Otros entran al matrimonio sin haber pasado el suficiente tiempo por este periodo inicial y tan importante y simplemente “ 10 certain cases or examples; for example, the search for a bride for Isaac in Genesis 24. In this particular situation Abraham sends his servant in search of a wife for his son Isaac. In biblical times of the Old Testament this is quite different. In the beginning, wives were chosen, although in this particular case we saw that the young woman is asked if she desires to go with Abraham’s servant. She went along with him without having even seen the potential suitor. She did this only because she thought it was God’s plan for her. Isaac had no opportunity to choose for himself, but rather God chose for him. As we can see, though the bible does not specifically speak of courting, it does give us great principles and examples by which we can guide our lives. We can see by this particular story that God places a tremendous amount of importance on the selection of a wife for Isaac. She could not be just anyone. She had to be someone with the same customs, and she had to be chosen with great care under the guidance of God because Isaac was a son of promise. Choosing a Partner This principle is the same for us. You and I also are children of promise. We are children chosen by God and purchased by the blood of Christ. God’s desire for his children is that the selection of a partner be done with great care and under his direction. For God, it is an issue of great importance. In our times, we tend to go to the other extreme; and many take their relationship with the opposite sex and with courting in a very liberal way and for the purpose of pleasure, entertainment and diversion. Dios te bendecirá y tú te librarás de grandes dolores de cabeza. friend, you are one flesh with them, and in a way have become married but without the blessing. My question to you is “Are you in a marriage without having the blessing of God?” Another interesting point in the text from Genesis 2:24 is where it says “A man will leave his mother and father”. This suggests that there is a relationship of total commitment with the other person and in which a new family will be started. According to the word of God, there is no possibility for the existence of having sex outside of a relationship that is blessed by God in matrimony. So as you can see, sex at the time of dating and premaritally is outside the plans of the will of God. When we as children of God choose to do this, we feel guilt even and when we don’t wish to recognize it. We also feel shame and pain, and the actual sex act is not really fully enjoyed. The courage to wait and the rewards for waiting are very great. Sexual relations are enjoyed much more fully when it is done within the commitment of matrimony and knowing that God has approved it, and God sees this as something holy. God will bless you, and you will free yourself from great pain. How do we resist temptation? In Proverb 6:28 it says “Will man walk over hot coals without that his feet should burn?” The best way to resist temptation is by not playing with fire. Avoid compromising affections. Avoid excessively passionate kissing. The christian engagement, from the biblical pastoral perspective 23 El Noviazgo Noviazgo The Engagement Dios comparó la relación matrimonial a la relación de Cristo y su iglesia. Efesios 5:25; 31-32. “ 22 that is never broken other than by God at the time of death. In the word of God it says “For man shall leave his father and mother and he will be united to his wife and they will be one flesh” Genesis 2:24. From this scripture we can see that sexual union is what makes a man and a woman one flesh. God compared marital relations to the relationship with Christ and his church in Ephesians 5:25; 31-32. Sexual union is a union that is not only of the flesh but also profoundly spiritual. This expression of “one flesh” has significance that is quite profound. It is a relationship between body, soul and spirit. It is the most intimate of unions between two people and it produces an affective dependence and a spiritual dependence between one and the other. For this reason, a couple of young people in this setting that have already had sexual relations before marriage and who later decide to separate or have to separate find it so exceedingly difficult to do so. They have had a relationship of profound emotional dependence for such a long time. Marriage is a relationship that is blessed by God for all of life. It is a relationship consisting of a total compromise between two people. If you have sexual relations with your boyfriend or girl- El noviazgo cristiano, desde la perspectiva bíblica pastoral “comienzan a vivir juntos”. Entonces, ¿Cómo vas a elegir? Muchas veces, eso que llamamos amor o estar enamorados, es solamente una emo- “ school or feel pressured simply because they like the girl or boy of their choosing. The vast majority of the time, they do not think about following the guidance of the Lord with regard to these issues or when they attempt to pray they manipulate God in order to obtain their own desire and end up fooling themselves. They also do not ask for the opinion of their parents or of their pastors, and they may not even communicate any of the information with regard to these issues. Others enter into matrimony without even having gone through a sufficient amount of this initial period of time of courting. They simply begin by living together. Others have courting periods that are very short and enter matrimony very hastily. Others get married under pressure due to unexpected pregnancy or even get married with people who do not share in their religious faith. As pastors, unfortunately, we have seen these lamentable situations many times in our own church and other churches due to the above causes. We have seen lives destroyed by poor decisions. These are decisions made without prayer, without wise advice or counsel, under mere impulse, or in the name of “love”. Broken marriages because of a poor foundation are common. To young men and women today I say: When you choose correctly with regard to these issues, you are placing these decisions on a solid foundation for the rest of your matrimonial life. The courting years are the cement of that foundation from that point forward for the rest of your marriage and on which you will begin to build a new family. Thus how are you going to choose? Will The christian engagement, from the biblical pastoral perspective 11 El Noviazgo The Engagement ción o es pasión. ¿Necesitas consultarle a Dios? Para 12 you base your decision on physical beauty, a pretty face, a muscular body, a bank account? Will you base your decision on external and superficial issues? Is it sufficient that you simply love somebody or think that you love somebody in order to get married with him or her? Are there other factors involved? We believe that there are other factors. Believing that you love somebody is not the most important thing. Many times that which we call love or being in love is simply an emotion or a passion. In reality one decides to love another person, and this is constructed and built with time. To love is to give and to give of oneself unconditionally to another person in order to bless and benefit that person. Many believe that the choice of a partner is like a lottery. That it is something based on luck or chance. As Christians, however, we do not believe this. Nothing is a question of luck but rather it is based on how we decide to choose. Do we choose based on the wisdom of God which he comparts to us and which is guided by him? He is the one who knows what is best for us and who is best for us. In reality we must chose more with our head than with our heart. And so the first point in choosing a partner is the following: Recognize that the choice of a partner is very important. The purpose of the courting years is to begin a relationship that we hope will ultimately end in matrimony, and matrimony El noviazgo cristiano, desde la perspectiva bíblica pastoral Listen to those who surround you, especially your family. This is important, although it won’t be the only source for making your final decision. Your family loves you, and they will always want the best for you for the most part. Listening and asking for advice from your spiritual leaders who love you is also important. Your relationship with God and your determination to do his will is the best guide. There is still time to go back on a decision if it were necessary. Dating, going steady or even being a fiancé with one another is not matrimony. If this is done responsibly and the feeling is serious and has been consulted with the Lord, I think that young people can begin to have a healthy relationship. With the passing of time, perhaps years, this relationship can be strengthened and even result in matrimony. What is the purpose of courting or dating? Dating is convenient for the follow reasons: 1) Getting to know one another. Getting to know what one thinks, what one feels or believes, whether you like each other, what you think about raising children and so many other things that are an important part of the dating and courting phase of a relationship. In this time period it is important to be sincere and transparent and that there be a true friendship. Preparation for matrimony is the main purpose of dating. We encourage that you speak about every subject that you can. It is important to get to know each other in different circumstances out of life and in different moods that each one of you will be in. Get to know each others’ families. You won’t get to know everything about your partner, but at least you will know a sufficient amount to know whether or not there is a very good chance of sharing a life together in a healthy and successful way. 2) You must come to know whether this relationship is in the will of God. The will of God is confirmed in different ways. One of them will be in your own feelings and emotions and in being honest with yourself. “ is for all of life. As Christians we do not believe in divorce as an option. This is a biblical principle that is quite clear. Please see Matthew 19, verses 3-9 and 1 Corinthians 7, verses 10-16. You must learn to choose a partner with great care and to be tremendously sure before getting married. If you do not do it in this way, you can ruin your life or ruin the life of the other, and you will be outside the will and plans of God for you. Should You Consult God? What does God have to do with issues of a potential couple? In the Word of God, it says that we can chose with whom we wish to marry but that it should be in line with the Lord. This means that you choose under his direction and will, and it means you must choose somebody who shares in your same faith. If you have accepted Jesus Christ as the Lord of your life, then he is your master. Of course he gave you liberty with which to choose, but deciding under that liberty must be tied to the sovereignty and will of Jesus Christ if you truly are his disciple. You need his guidance to make such an important decision which is the most important decision of your life after the decision to follow Jesus Christ in the first place. In order to avoid bad experiences or errors, the most important thing is to decide the direction of the One who knows it all. If God is your Lord, you have to permit that he guide you and that he choose for you in the same way that the servant of Abraham did for Isaac. The christian engagement, from the biblical pastoral perspective 13 El Noviazgo The Engagement Decide casarte con alguien que comparte tu misma fe. For this you must pray. He will guide you, and he will confirm it with you in a thousand different ways. You must also be honest with yourself and attempt to follow and search for the will of God. When a relationship is of God, it is something quite natural and not forced. The Lord will make it such that that person that was chosen by him for you is the ideal person. It is possible that from the very beginning you like that person, but it is also equally possible that only with some time will you begin to like that person and love that person as you begin to deal with them more frequently. Experiences are different in each case. It is best that when you are attracted to a person, that you begin to pray and ask the Lord whether this feeling is correct and whether it comes from Him. Then you ask that it be affirmed and that those sentiments be mutual from the standpoint of the other partner if this truly is of God. If not, ask that these feelings be removed. One of the strongest surest signs for knowing that you are doing the will of God is that he places peace in your mind and heart. We will give you some advice with regard to this issue which is as follows: Look for the spiritual covering of your pastors and/or parents. Search for the guidance of the Lord. Ask Him if this is the person that he has chosen for you. This is an important biblical principle. Decide to get married with someone who shares your same faith This is also another biblical principle that is very important. There must be no obligation to get married with anyone, not even if it is the very day of the wedding. Breaking a relationship of course in these tender courting years is very difficult and brings a lot of pain and almost always a tremendous number of wounds. For this reason, it is very important to seek the guidance of God before beginning any loving relationship or courting relationship and to continue to search for that guidance during the entire course of that relationship up to the point of getting married as well. You will avoid a tremendous number of wounds and pain, and God will bless you. Never take this decision as a simple diversion or pleasure or like something of little importance. You are playing with fire if you do so. Becoming boyfriend and girlfriend at a very young age almost as children is not good either because they are generally not mature enough or prepared enough for this kind of situation. Our advice to very young children is that you have many friends. If you like somebody, meet with them only in groups of friends. Speak with one another in various different settings and different experiences. Have fun in a healthy way and come to know each other. It is normal that when a boy or a girl like each other that they desire to be together especially in a time of adolescence and especially in those moments of establishing one’s feminine or masculine identity. But to feel compromised at such a young age in a relationship that may be too close such as is in the courting years where kissing and certain physical contact may be involved, can be dangerous if this is not responsibly done. The christian engagement, from the biblical pastoral perspective 19 El Noviazgo The Engagement Siempre es preferible romper una relación de noviazgo si te has dado cuenta que no son el uno para el otro o que lo de ustedes no es una relación aprobada por Dios. Let him do the work in your life. In the Old Testament, we see that Abraham asked his servant to go to his previous homeland in search of a candidate and that he search for a girl for his son Isaac who was not among the Canaanites. In Canaan, there were pagan villages that adored idols and had strange customs. It was considered reasonable and convenient for matrimony and for the family to avoid these villages. We could see by this story the importance that Abraham gave to the careful selection of the potential wife of his son. That decision had to be guided by God. The servant took great care in making sure that it was God who was guiding him in this choice and for this reason he asked for a sign from above as we have seen in Genesis 24. He speaks to us in II Corinthians 6, verses 14-15 about unequal yokes and this is for all human relationships. How much more true is this for the relationship that will be for all your life in matrimony? If in religiously compatible marriage it is already difficult to just get along, how much more difficult will it be in a marriage where two people are not in agreement with regard to their faith? Whom will you share your periods of prayer with? With whom will you share your most intimate thoughts, your worries with regard to God, and your doubts? Who assures you that when you get married he or she with whom you have married will ultimately convert to your religion? Who assures you that when you get married that you won’t have problems because you are going to your church and you leave your partner at home? A friend of ours from our own church, once in speaking to his own son with regard to this topic, asked him, “If marriage is complicated enough by itself naturally, then why would you go and complicate it more by marrying somebody who is not of your own faith?” The Bible says in Amos chapter 3, verse 3 “Will they walk together if they are not in agreement?” Remember that your spiritual life is the most important thing of your life. With what spiritual and moral base will we do so? We will not have a firm foundation on which to rely because we will be a house divided against itself. Above all, from the very beginning we know that it is not the will of God. We have heard many Christian parents speaking with regard to their children who are in their courting years with people who are not Christian and saying things such as the following: “Well he is not a Christian but he is an excellent young man”, or “The most important thing is that he is a great worker and from a good family”, or “I am sure that when they get married he will come to our church”. These are but a few of various comments that we have heard in our church. How is it possible that Christian parents will be in agreement with this situation? And what about their spiritual life? What about that which is most important in our lives? Do we not realize that when somebody does not have the Lord in their life, in reality they are missing everything? Parents, please respond to this! Begin to pray for your children and open your eyes. The excuse is often used that the potential partner will convert later on or that the Lord has called us to evangelize them is a great lie of Satan. If in reality we search for the guidance of the Lord in this decision, it is not logical to think that he is going to unite us with a person who does not belong to us. – Génesis 24. that person prior to marriage and with time will unite that person with us. A famous preacher John Wesley in the 1700’s had the following experience. A young girl came to him wanting to get married with a young man who was not Christian. She, herself convinced of her own arguments and reasons, was filled with all kinds of excuses and explanations. Wesley let her speak for a good while and at the end he said to her, “Get on top of this table”. She got on top of the table and he said “Try to lift me up with you onto that table”. She said that she could not and he said, “Can I bring you back down from the table?” And she said “yes.” With one simple swoop of his arms, he brought her down easily. What is the moral of this story? It is much easier for a non-believer to bring down a believer, than a believer to bring up a non-believer. The young boy or girl who matches up with a partner who is a nonbeliever does so because their faith is an anorexic faith that is weak and without true commitment to the Lord. In another example, Martha was attracted to a young man who appeared to have all of the attractive physical qualities, intellectual abilities, and character that any girl would like. They became friends and soon they fell in love. One day he asked her that they go out as girlfriend and boyfriend. But he was not Christian. She rejected him because she wished to firmly do the will of God. They went their different ways, and they did not see each other. Two or three years passed, and he accepted Jesus Christ.
