SEMINARIO “Enseñanza del Pensamiento Crítico a través del Dialogo Socrático” Universidad de Los Andes, Santiago de Chile 10 de diciembre 2015 Taller área de Ciencias On Ancient Medicine, Hippocrates Biological evolution, adaptation, diet/nutrition Talk with students about what they normally eat in a day. Ask them to imagine how they would feel by eating all raw food, wild berries nuts, etc. Have students do a brief pre-write (5 minutes) in response to these questions: What is medicine? Is the food you eat more for fuel or pleasure? Share, when appropriate, that Hippocrates was Greek and lived in 460 B.C. (refer to world map and timeline) and is known as the Father of Medicine. The Hippocratic Oath is one of the oldest binding documents in history and is still held sacred by physicians: to treat the ill to the best of one's ability, to preserve a patient's privacy, to teach the secrets of medicine to the next generation, and so on. Distribute the text and ask students to say something that they have read that it looks like. Guide students in numbering the sentences: 1-8. Read the text aloud with students. 1 SEMINARIO “Enseñanza del Pensamiento Crítico a través del Dialogo Socrático” Universidad de Los Andes, Santiago de Chile 10 de diciembre 2015 Taller área de Ciencias Assign selected students to find definitions (and share) for the following: indisposed, regiment, lapse, brutish, perish, befitting, macerating, hull, maza. Discuss the meaning of “claim” in order to anticipate the post-seminar writing. Have students read the text a second time and work with a partner to think about how this text might be chunked. In other words, if they were going to break this writing down into smaller paragraphs, where would one start and another start? Have students mark 3-4 chunks for this text and have them label each one according to the key point. Share whole group noting the logic and common ground across groups. “A Paideia Seminar is a collaborative, intellectual dialogue about a text, facilitated with open- ended questions. The main purpose of seminar is to arrive at a fuller understanding of the textual ideas and values, of ourselves, and of each other. “I am primarily responsible for asking challenging, open-ended questions, and I will take a variety of notes to keep up with the talk 2 SEMINARIO “Enseñanza del Pensamiento Crítico a través del Dialogo Socrático” Universidad de Los Andes, Santiago de Chile 10 de diciembre 2015 Taller área de Ciencias turns and flow of ideas. I will help move the discussion along in a productive direction by asking follow-up questions based on my notes. “I am asking you to think, listen, and speak candidly about your thoughts, reactions, and ideas. You can help each other do this by using each other’s names. “You do not need to raise your hands in order to speak; rather, the discussion is collaborative in that you try to stay focused on the main speaker and wait your turn to talk. “You should try to both agree and disagree in a courteous, thoughtful manner. For example, you might say, ‘I disagree with Joanna because...,’ focusing on the ideas involved, not the individuals. “Now, think about how you normally participate in a discussion as a group. You know yourself better than anyone. What goal can you set for yourself that will help this be a really good seminar? “Use this (distribute handout) Paideia Seminar Participation Rubric and please mark what will be your personal participation goal for this seminar—the next 20-30 minutes.” For this seminar, I will suggest our group goal (TO Look at the person speaking). [Set group goal and display it for all to see.] 3 SEMINARIO “Enseñanza del Pensamiento Crítico a través del Dialogo Socrático” Universidad de Los Andes, Santiago de Chile 10 de diciembre 2015 Taller área de Ciencias What could be another title for this essay (3 word maximum). Why would you give this essay that title? According to the text, what is the relationship between diet and disease? What is medicine according to Hippocrates? How does what is written here compare with other things you’ve heard or read about medicine? What is important to remember about what Hippocrates says about medicine? 4 SEMINARIO “Enseñanza del Pensamiento Crítico a través del Dialogo Socrático” Universidad de Los Andes, Santiago de Chile 10 de diciembre 2015 Taller área de Ciencias “Please take a few minutes to reflect on how you did with your personal participation goal. Note in writing to what extent you met the goal. (Give time for reflection.) “Now let’s think about how we did on our group goal. (TO look at the person speaking). On a scale of one to five, FIVE being perfect, how would you say we did? Why? (Pause for hand rating. Discuss briefly by asking a few volunteers to say why they gave the rating they did.) “Now, would someone be willing to (volunteer) to share what you set as your personal goal and how you did?” (Allow a few to share depending on time.) “Keeping in mind, our goal is continuous improvement, let’s make note of what we might focus on next seminar both as individual seminar participants and as a community of thinkers. Thank you again for your participation.” Have students spend 3-4 minutes jotting down notes on important ideas they heard, read, and thought during the Seminar. 5 SEMINARIO “Enseñanza del Pensamiento Crítico a través del Dialogo Socrático” Universidad de Los Andes, Santiago de Chile 10 de diciembre 2015 Taller área de Ciencias After reading and discussing Part 3 of On Ancient Medicine about medicine and food, write a magazine ad in which you describe your favorite food. Make at least two claims about the benefits of the food and quote the text at least once. Work to identify and write some notes about your favorite healthy food. Do some research about your food of choice as needed. Identify one quote from the text that you will use for your ad. Decide on how you want to organize your ad and how you will place your points. Sketch out the key parts of your ad. Write the phrases and sentences about your favorite healthy food. Draft the sentence when you will include a quote from the text. With your partner, take turns sharing what you have designed and written. After listening to your partner say back the two claims you heard. Based on what your revision partner offered, make additions and revisions to your ad. Post your ad on our dedicated shared space. 6 SEMINARIO “Enseñanza del Pensamiento Crítico a través del Dialogo Socrático” Universidad de Los Andes, Santiago de Chile 10 de diciembre 2015 Taller área de Ciencias 7
