A TOWER OF FAITH Immaculate Conception, Astoria The Second Decade 1934-1944 Reverend Edward J. Higgins, pastor of Immaculate Conception, Astoria had been Lieutenant Chaplain in World War I. He felt that his fellow Catholic veterans could be a tremendous source of good if they could unite under the banner proclaiming their Catholicism and Patriotism. In May, 1934, with the permission of Bishop Molloy and the blessings of Pope Pius XI, Father Higgins founded the Catholic War Veterans "for the glory of God and Nation." The CWV is a National Organization with 1600 Posts carrying forward "for God, for Country and for Home." Fr. Higgins placed the protection of the Catholic War Veterans society into the hands of Mary, The Immaculate Conception, Mother of God. In 1934, a Fife and Drum Corp was formed. Post 1 of the Catholic War Veterans organized a Brass Band. These organization won several World's Fair Competitions. During 1936 and 1937, the Church sponsored camps for the neighborhood boys. Under the guidance of Fr. E. Kelly, several plays and minstrels were performed. In 1937, the Community of Sisters of St. Francis had increased in number and needed a better residence. A new duplex residence was purchased by the Pastor as their Convent. The growth of the parish also made it necessary to have visiting Priests celebrate Mass over the weekend. The Vincentian Fathers of St. John's University served our parish in this capacity. By 1939, the Parish facilities needed to be updated. On the advice of Bishop Molloy, the present Rectory was constructed. When Fr. Michael Lopez passed to his reward, he left $63,000 to Immaculate Conception Parish for a new Church! Due to the beginning of World War II, all plans for the renovations of parish buildings had to be temporary halted. Immaculate Conception Parish was represented by 1,757, both men and women, who joined the Armed Forces. A Servicemen's Committee was formed to keep those who were at War in mind and in prayer. 25 parishioners sacrificed their lives during World War II. With the end of the war in 1945, change came to Immaculate Conception. The Community of Franciscan Nuns departed after 21 years of service to the parish. The Holy Union Sisters from Fall River, Massachusetts, came to serve in their place, continuing until the present time. The campaign for the parish buildings resumed. Property for a school playground as well as the building bordering church property were purchased. The parish societies were revived. The Holy Name, the Rosary Society, and the Catholic War Veterans all increased their membership and diversified their activities. The Nocturnal Adoration Society was created as well as "Lady of Fatima" First Saturday Communion Group. Younger parishioners joined the "Confraternity of Christian Doctrine". "Club Immaculata" existed for those who were over 18 years old. Three troops of Boy Scouts were also formed during this time of parish growth. OUR LADY'S PRESCHOOL Our Lady's Preschool offers a Sunday Program for all children- ages three, four and five. The program introduces the child to our Catholic teachings on their own level. Classes are from 9:00 - 10:00 AM in the school beginning on October 5. Registration is $50.00 for one child and $75.00 for two children. If you have any question, please contact Mrs. Crum at 718-9564494 email to [email protected] 9/11 MEMORIAL CANDLELIGHT CEREMONY The Annual “9/11 Memorial Candlelight Ceremony’’ will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. at McManus Memorial Park—81st Street & Grand Central Service Road.
