MSGR. FERRARESE’S SABBATICAL—PART V
I have so many rich memories of my time in the Middle East!
Our journey to Jordan and the desert in which the Hebrews wandered before they entered the Promised land was
unforgettable. The Desert was so vast and we were able to actually wade in the Jordan and renew our Baptismal
Vows.
Another highlight was the Church over the Well of Jacob where Jesus spoke with the Samaritan woman. We also
spent a few days on a Kibbutz in the Negev Desert. That was especially unforgettable. Around 300 adults and
children live on this plot of land. Because it is sunny 365 days a year, they invested in solar panels which is better
termed a Solar Field (the size of a large city block). The Solar Fields generate enough electricity for the whole
commune and for half of the city of Eilat on the banks of the Red Sea. They also have 5,000 kilometers of glass tubing
that they use to pump water through and grow high grade algae that is used for cosmetics and medicines. It sells for
$15,000 a kilo. All the money they make goes into the community. No one gets it. They are given a small stipend and
a place to life for their families. Health care is free and so is education. When the children reach college age, they
can go anywhere for their education: Harvard, Oxford, etc. and the community pays for everything!
Once grown, the children can either join the commune (after two years of observation) or they are free to go
anywhere they want. They are all Jews but they have a project with Palestinian Muslims and Christians so that they
can share in the development of the country. Not all are religious, but many are. They make no demands that way.
We were able to say Mass each day in one of the assembly halls.
It is, as you might imagine, a highly educated group. One of them took some date pits found at Masada that were
2,000 years old and brought them back to life. There is a date tree in the Kibbutz named “Mathuselah” (the oldest
person mentioned in the Bible) that they grew from one of those pits. They want to see if the fruit of that tree varies
from the present date tree since it use to possess wonderful medicinal properties!
We also spent a rainy day at Masada! It only rains one day per year there and we got it. We blamed the English Priest
for that!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Ordinary Time beckons, and so on this Sunday we
surrender the last glimmers of paschal joy as we
celebrate the renewal of our life around the table of the
Eucharist. This feast reminds us that the goal of the
catechumen’s journey through Lent is not the baptismal
font at Easter, but rather the experience of Pentecost. It is
all about life lived in the Spirit’s embrace in relationship
to the Body of Christ, which is found both “on the table”
and “at the table.” The season of confirmation is also
drawing to a close, and this feast serves as a reminder
that this sacrament, a solemn sending from font to table,
is keyed to renewed vigor. Confirmation has sometimes
been sadly misunderstood as a kind of graduation from
religious formation, but it is nothing of the sort. It is
about being led by the Lord Jesus to the place where the
Spirit flourishes, and where the gifts of the Spirit are
most easily detectable. After next week we will resume
our consideration of the sacrament of confirmation, its
rich and somewhat tangled history, its challenging
theology, and its changing celebration.

TRANSFORMATION
The effect of our sharing in the Body and Blood of
Christ is to change us into what we receive.

PRAYING
One prays best who does not know that one is
praying.
—St. Anthony of Padua
francesa, santa Margarita María Alacoque a quien Jesús
Si
regresamos a él, Jesucristo nos promete doce bendiciones
de paz, consolación, fervor y otras gracias.
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — Never forget the LORD your God, who
brought you out of slavery (Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14b16a).
Psalm — Praise the Lord, Jerusalem (Psalm 147).
Second Reading — Because the loaf of bread is one, we
who partake of it, though we are many, are one body
(1 Corinthians 10:16-17).
Gospel — Jesus said, “I am the living bread; whoever
eats this bread will live forever” (John 6:51-58).
THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST
AMEN
Take a look around the walls of your church. Even if it’s
only a year or two old, the word “Amen” has resounded
off those walls countless times at the conclusion of the
Eucharistic Prayer and as the faithful have come forward
to receive the Body and Blood of Christ. Today’s feast is
about those “Amens” offered in faith, offered in times of
trouble or doubt, spoken in joy, spoken mindlessly, but
all given to God in a multitude of ways. It is our very
lives that lie behind our “Amens” and are touched by the
presence of Christ, the presence we celebrate today.
More importantly, we celebrate the love of Christ for us
shown in the sacrifice on Calvary and that he continues
to give to us in every celebration of the Eucharist. What
can we do but rejoice in that great love, and then go out
into the world and live that love in sacrificing for others?
No importa
