La Europa del siglo XVIII fue un hervidero de descubrimientos de fuerzas invisibles y misteriosas. Newton demostró
la existencia de la gravedad. Benjamin Franklin capturó y
experimentó con la electricidad. Miles de espectadores se
reunieron en París para ver al inventor Jacques Alexandre
Charles, utilizar gases invisibles para tomar vuelo en el
primer globo lleno de hidrógeno. Por lo tanto, cuando el
carismático médico austriaco Franz Anton Mesmer afirmó
haber descubierto una nueva fuerza invisible – una que,
él explicó, corría por todo ser viviente y era la causa y la
cura de todas las enfermedades físicas – el hallazgo pareció totalmente dentro del reino de las posibilidades de las
personas que vivían en el siglo de las luces.
Mesmer, era muy popular en la corte francesa. En sus
salones especiales, solía tratar a pacientes combinando
la luz, la música y el encantamiento. Esto llegó a ser conocido como el mesmerismo. Mozart era un gran fan de
Mesmer. Solía organizar conciertos en honor de Mesmer.
Los miembros de la Academia de Ciencias Francesa fueron los encargados de investigar sus teorías. Entre sus
miembros se contaban los científicos Antoine Lavoisier,
el alcalde de París Jean Bailly, el Dr. Joseph Guillotin, y
Benjamin Franklin. Desafortunadamente no pudieron
probar sus teorías en ausencia de evidencia científica. Sin
embargo sobre la base de esta teoría, un cirujano escocés
James Braid desarrolló la hipnosis en 1842.
Por todo esto el término mesmerizar significa hipnotizar;
hechizar; fascinar…Y eso es lo que le ocurre a cualquier
bridgista que ve jugar a la pareja Auken-Welland…Ellos
ocuparon la primera posición del Butler del Round Robin
de equipos Open, ganando 1.56 IMPs por cada tablilla
que jugaron y jugaron 139 de ellas…Segundos en el butler, quedaron Chagas Gabriel con Villas Boas Miguel que
lograron ganar 1.17 jugando 112 tablillas, terceros con
1.15 IMPs por tablilla se colocaron Madala Agustín con
Alejandro Bianchedi con 111 tablillas jugadas.
Welland-Auken juegan en el equipo que ganó el Round
Robin clasificatorio, el equipo que en los Cuartos de Final
derrotó al equipo Caracci y el equipo que en las semi-finales se enfrentó y le ganó al equipo Perula, en el que juegan varios Campeones del Mundo. Veamos unas manos
que la pareja jugó en el tercer set de la semi-final, y vean
si al final de la lectura ustedes también se sienten mesmerizados por su juego…
El tercer set finalizó con Milner 115 y Perula 85.

Eighteenth-century Europe was abuzz with the frequent discovery of invisible and mysterious forces. Newton proved the
existence of gravity. Benjamin Franklin captured and experimented with electricity. And thousands of spectators gathered
in Paris to watch French inventor Jacques Alexandre Charles
harness invisible gases to take flight in the first hydrogen-filled balloon. So, when charismatic Austrian physician Franz
Anton Mesmer claimed to have discovered yet another invisible force — one that, he said, coursed through every living
thing and was the cause and cure of every physical ailment
— the finding seemed entirely within the realm of possibility
to people living in the Age of Enlightenment.
Mesmer was very popular in French court. In his special salons he used to treat patients with the combination of light,
music and incantation. This came to be known as mesmerism. Mozart was a big fan of Mesmer. He used to organize
concert in Mesmer’s honor. Members of the French Academy
of Sciences were commissioned to investigate his theories.
Among the members were scientists: Antoine Lavoisier,
Paris mayor Jean Bailly, Dr. Joseph Guillotin, and Benjamin
Franklin. Unfortunately they could not prove his theories in
the absence of scientific evidence. Based on this theory, a
Scottish surgeon James Braid, developed hypnosis in 1842.
That’s why Mesmerize means to hypnotize; to spellbind; to
fascinate; to compel by fascination. And that’s what happens
to any bridge player kibitzing Welland-Auken … They occupied
the first position of the Round Robin’s Open Teams Butler,
winning 1.56 IMPs per each board they played and they played 139 of them. ..Second position was for Gabriel Chagas
and Villas Boas Miguel who managed to win 1.17 IMPs/ board
playing 112 boards, third with 1.15 IMPs per board were
Agustin Madala and Alejandro Bianchedi playing 111 boards.
Welland-Auken team won the Open Teams Round Robin, they
defeated the Caracci team in the quarterfinals and in the semi-finals they faced and defeated Perula a team where several World Champions play. Let’s see some boards played by
Auken-Welland in the third semi-final set, and see if at the end
of the article you also feel mesmerized by their play…
The third semi-final set ended Milner 115 – Perula 85.

Auken abrió de 1♥, que muy seguido es desbalanaceada,
ya que las balanceadas las abren de 1 aunque tengan
palo quinto o sean las 5422. Upmark compitió con espadas, y Welland mostró una mano FG con apoyo cuarto
y corta a espada. Después de los 4♠ de Nystrom, Auken
preguntó keycards, y cuando escuchó que su partner
tenia 2, declaró el slam de corazón.
Auken opened his hand with 1♥, very often UNBAL, they
open 1 = any BAL hand incl. any other 5-cd suit also
5422. Upmark competed with spades, Welland showed
his FG hand with 4 cards support and short spades. After
Nystrom’s 4♠, Auken asked for keycards, and when she
saw Welland’s answer showing two of them, declared the
heart slam.

Edgar Kaplan fue muy conocido por los chistes que ofrecía
durante el curso de sus comentarios en el VG de los un campeonatos mundiales. Éstos son algunos de ellos:
Edgar Kaplan was well-known for the witticisms he offers during
the course of his commentary at a world championship. Here
are a few of them:
Como me gusta que me gusten las declaraciones que hago,
no habría hecho esa declararacion.
Since I like to like the bids I make, I wouldn’t have made that
bid.
Estoy dispuesto a abrir de 1NT con un mayor quinto con la
mano correcta. Lo que ocurre es que nunca he recibido la
mano correcta.

When my partner under leads ace-queen-jack, partner must
want me to do something. Maybe he wants me to waste my
brain power trying to figure out what he wants me to do.
Declarer has the opportunity to win 13 of the last nine tricks.
Unfortunately he’s already lost three.
I’ve never felt the need to raise my partner’s suit with the singleton six.
It’s really unsatisfactory to guess wrong, so might as well guess
right.

After Lambardi made the opening lead, Lasut thought and
