JUAN CARLOS VENTIN
Por Angie Bach
A partir del año 2009 empezó a jugar
por Argentina, clasificando durante
el Campeonato Sudamericano para
jugar la Bermuda Bowl por ese país
y conviertiendose así en el único
jugador español en haber jugado dos
veces esta copa en la historia.
Participó de dos Campeonatos
Sudamericanos Open, siendo uno de
los ganadores de la ultima edicion
que se jugó en Santiago de Chile en
el mes de Mayo 2014.
Otros resultados importantes son:
tercer puesto en la Cavendish de Las
Vegas y la Medalla de Bronce en el
Europeo Categoría Mixta en el año
2007.
JUAN CARLOS VENTÍN:
Maestro Mundial Vitalicio (WIM),
además cuenta con innumerables
oros en Campeonatos de España,
ha jugado por el Equipo Nacional
Español cinco veces en la categoría
Open y tres veces en la juniors. En
la categoría “juniors”, obtuvo la
Medalla de Plata en el año 1980. En
el año 2002 una Medalla de Plata en
Open, así como una presencia en la
Bermuda Bowl.
Este año su equipo Juan Carlos
Ventín-Frederic Wrang – Johan
Upmark (de Suecia) y Sabine AukenRoy Welland (de Alemania) logró
la Medalla de Bronce en la Copa
Rosenblum (Campeonato Mundial
Transnacional) durante la 14 Serie
Mundial disputada en Sanya (China),
siendo un logro único no solo en
Catalunya sino en toda España.
Sigue abajo una entrevista donde
Fernando Lema, editor de la
Csbnews.org le formuló las siguientes
preguntas:
Juan Carlos: Bridgísticamente
hablando, tuviste un año casi
soñado, -¿que puedes comentarnos al respecto?
Sí. Realmente he sido muy afortunado en poder encadenar una serie
de resultados que han hecho que
el 2014 sea el mejor año bridgístico de mi vida. Sin embargo, los
resultados en cualquier deporte de
alta competición son el resultado
de mucho esfuerzo, armonía en tu

vida personal, además de un punto
de fortuna.
En concreto – ¿Qué resultados
obtuviste?
A nivel Internacional: Durante el
mes de Enero de 2014 quedé segundo en el 5º TGRs Auction Pairs de
Londres. En Febrero participé de
la “Slava Cup 2014″; un prestigioso
Torneo de Equipos que se juega en
Moscu, Rusia donde repetí el puesto y también finalicé tercero en el
5º Open de Parejas de Barcelona,
en esta oportunidad jugué de compañero con Dennis Bilde.
En Mayo gané el Oro en el
Sudamericano de Equipos, luego
jugué en una Calcuta de Turquía y
quedé tercero.
Para finalizar la temporada con
el Bronce en la Serie Mundial de
Sanya, China.
A nivel Nacional, gané las Parejas
Open de Argentina y los Equipos de
España (hace unas horas).
¿Cuál de ellos te hizo más ilusión?
Sin duda alguna el Campeonato
Sudamericano.
Tenía una deuda conmigo mismo
y algo que demostrar a la entrañable comunidad bridgística
sudamericana.
Sin embargo, el Bronce en los
World Series de Sanya fue el que
más repercusión tiene a nivel de
puntos en el Ranking Mundial de
Maestros de la WBF.
¿Cuál fue el que más disfrutaste?
¿Y el que más sufriste?
Como no puede ser de otro modo,
en todos ellos disfruté. La felicidad
en la competencia es directamente
proporcional al resultado obtenido.
El que más sufrí fue el
Sudamericano, pues mis amigos
Diego Brenner, Tito Muzio, Gabriel
Chagas y Marcelo Castello Blanco
jugaron fantásticamente. Después
de estar perdiendo por 30 Imps en
la última etapa, logramos empatarles y tuvimos que jugar cuatro
manos adicionales.
Finalmente ganamos el oro ambos equipos. Decisión justa, en mi
opinión.
Como decepción, te contaré que
en Londres finalizamos primeros,
pero un ajustaje arbitral de puntuaje, nos pasó a segundos por
décimas de IMPs.
Fuimos primeros durante 10
minutos y el doble de ricos, pues el
torneo tiene cuantiosos premios en
metálico. Si bien, el segundo puesto
también estaba muy bien dotado.
¿Cómo se formó el equipo con
Sabine Auken y Roy Welland?
Con Sabine me une una gran
amistad de mucho tiempo. Hace
dos años cuando Sabine empezó la
relación con Roy, ella dejó de jugar
en Damas y pasó a jugar en la
Categoría Open, formando pareja
con Roy.
A consecuencia de ello, era
cuestión de tiempo que encontráramos un torneo para jugar los
cuatro.
¿La pareja Sabine Auken y Roy
Welland, es tan buena como se
dice?
Para mi son mejores que buenos.
Admiro su sistema, que pone
muchísimas dificultados a los
contrarios, al tiempo que es súper
preciso para las manos de slam.
A mi modo de ver, su sistema es
una de las grandes novedades del
Bridge. Sin duda escucharemos
hablar de ellos durante mucho
tiempo.
-Háblame de tu partner, Frederic
Wrang.
Frederic es un gran tipo y jugador
fuera de clase. Para mi el encontrarlo (por cierto, se lo debo a
Sabine), ha sido como la culminación de un aprendizaje durante
los muchos años que hace que
juego.
De todos mis compañeros aprendí
algo: de Carlos Fernández, la
importancia del carteo al inicio de
tu vida bridgística. Con Amadeo
Llopart, la buena onda con tu
pareja. Con José Manuel Peidró,
el arte de la defensa. Y con Pablo
Lambardi, la importancia absoluta de la subasta (el remate en
Argentina) para competir a nivel
internacional.
Con Frederic he consolidado todo
ello y ahora recojo los frutos de mi
trayectoria vital.
¿Qué planes tienes para el 2015?
Como cada año, mi temporada
consta de 40 días al año de competición. Hay varios invitationals que
jugaré por EUROPA y luego como
torneo principal el Campeonato
Europeo.
A USA iré al NABC 0 National de
Verano (Chicago) y en Argentina
uno o dos Torneos oficiales.

–¿Juan Carlos: ¿Tienes alguna anécdota divertida para contarnos?
¿Conoces el golpe de la Coca
Cola?…te lo cuento.
Tenia yo veintitantos y estaba
jugando con un maestro que tenia
fama de piola. En la contra dos
viejitas despistadas. Mi partner
estaba en la mano pero necesitaba jugar desde el muerto hacia la
tenaza de AQ de su mano…lamentablemente a 4 cartas del final
ya no quedaban entradas en el
muerto.
El tardaba, tardaba…y tardaba….
Hasta que dijo: Phampa juega
pequeña del muerto. Yo le dije,
No…estas en la mano (en aquella
época todavía se podía advertir).
El siguió pensando y las viejitas
seguían medio dormidas…
El lo volvió a intentar y dijo…: Mira
no se que hacer, juega pequeña del
muerto. Yo cabreado pero creyendo aun en su despiste le volví a
repetir: Te recuerdo que estas en la
mano…
El me miro y dijo, es verdad…
mira… puedes ir a pedirle al camarero una coca cola por favor…
Cuando regrese las cartas estaban
en el estuche así que pregunte:
¿Cuantas has hecho?
Dijo: mas uno, lo que significaba
que había hecho las 4 ultimas bazas jugando hacia su As Dama.
La jugada la bautice como el golpe
de la Coca Cola.

INTERVIEW WITH JUAN CARLOS VENTIN

Upmark (Sweden) and Sabine AukenRoy Welland (Germany) won the
Bronze Medal at the Rosenblum Cup
(Transnational World Championship)
during the 14 World Series in Sanya
(China), being a unique achievement
not only in Catalonia but throughout
Spain.
Bellow you can access an interview,
where Fernando Lema, Csbnews.
org editor asked him the following
questions:
Juan Carlos; speaking strictly about
bridge you had an almost dreamed
year. What can you tell us about it?
JUAN CARLOS VENTÍN: World
International Master (WBF: WIM),
also has countless Golds in Spain,
he has played for Spain in the
National Open Team five times and
three times in the juniors category.
In the “juniors” he won the Silver
Medal in 1980. In 2002 he won a
Silver Medal in the Open and he
earned his presence to play the
Bermuda Bowl.
From 2009 he started playing for
Argentina, and in the South American
Championship he also earned the
possibilty to play the Bermuda Bowl
by that country and thus becoming
the only Spanish player to have played
twice this cup in history.
He has played two South American
Open Teams Championship, and he is
one of the winners of its last edition,
played in Santiago de Chile, May 2014.
Other important results are: third place
at the Cavendish in Las Vegas and the
Bronze Medal at the European Mixed
Category Championship in 2007.
This year his team: Juan Carlos
Yes. I’ve been really lucky to achieve
a series of results that have made
2014 the best bridge-year of my life.
However, the results as in any top sport
are a result of hard work, harmony in
your personal life as well as a point of
fortune.
-In Particular – Tell our Readers
what results did you get?
At international level: During the month
of January 2014 I was second in the
5th TGRs Auction Pairs of London. In
February I participated in the “Slava
Cup 2014″; one of the most prestigious
teams tournament that is played in
Moscow, Russia where I repeated my a
third position, the same position as in
the 5th Open Pairs of Barcelona, this
time playing with Dennis Bilde.
In May I won the Gold in the South
American Teams Championship, and
then I played a Calcutta in Turkey and
finished third.
To end this season calendar, I won a
Bronze in the World Series of Sanya,
China.
Nationally, I won the Open Pairs in
Argentina and the Spain Open Teams
Championship (a few hours ago).

Which one made you more excited?
Undoubtedly the South American
Championship. I had a debt with myself
and something to prove to the beloved
South American bridge community.
However, the bronze in the World
Series of Sanya was the one who got
more visibility and points in the World
Bridge Federation Master Rankings.
What was the one you most enjoyed? And the one you suffered the
more?
It can not be otherwise, I enjoyed all
of them. Although happiness in competition is directly proportional to the
result. The one I suffered the most was
the Sudamericano, because my friends
and opponents Diego Brenner, Tito
Muzzio, Gabriel Chagas and Marcelo
Castello Blanco played fantastically.
After being 30 Imps below, in the last
phase, we tied and had to play four
extra boards.
Finally both teams share the gold. Fair
decision, in my opinion.
As disappointment, in London I finished
first, but because of a tournament
director decision the score was reviewed changed and for tenths of an
IMP we finished second. We were first
for 10 minutes and twice as rich, as
the tournament had substantial cash
prizes. The second place was also very
well endowed.
How was that you played in a team
with Sabine Auken and Roy Welland?
With Sabine me share a great friendship for a long time. Two years ago
when Sabine began her relationship
with Roy, she stopped playing in Ladies
and went on to play in the Open
Category, with Roy as her partnership.
As a result, it was a matter of time that
we could find a tournament to play all
together.
¿Is the Sabine Auken and Roy
Welland partnership, as good as all
comment?
this and now I am gathering the fruits
of my bridge-life story.

For me they are awsome. I admire their
system, which get the opponents in lots
of troubles, while being super accurate
for the slam hands. In my point of view,
their system is one of the great innovations in Bridge. No doubt we will hear

¿Your plans for this 2015?

Like every year, my season has 40 days
a year of competition. There are several invitationals I’ll play in EUROPE and
then the most important one Tromso
2015: the European Championships.
After a while he said: Phampa play a

I will go to USA to play the Summer
NABC (Chicago) and in Argentina one
or two official events.

Frederic is a great guy and an excelent
player. For me finding him (by the
way, I owe it to Sabine) has been the
culmination of my learning experience during the many years I’ve been
playing.
From all my colleagues I learned
something: Carlos Fernández, the
importance of the declarer play at the
beginning of my carreer. With Amadeo
Llopart, the good vibes with your partner. With José Manuel Peidró, the art
of defense. And with Pablo Lambardi,
the absolute importance of the auction

¿Do you know the Coca Cola Coup?…
I was twenty and was playing with a
bridge master who had a reputation
for being very quick… Playing against
two old ladies. My partner had the
lead but needed to play from the table
into his AQ … unfortunately in the 4
He kept thinking and the old ladies
were still half asleep.
He looked at me and said, it is true …
look … can you go and ask the waiter
for a coke please …
When I returned the hand was over
and so I asked: How many tricks have
you done? He answered: plus one,
which meant he had made the last 4
tricks playing to his strength A-Q.
The coup was baptized as the Coca
Cola Coup.

El mundo del Olimpo, sede de los dioses, que observaban,
se metían y jugaban con el mundo de los seres humanos,
y que tenía características utópicas-míticas, se encontraba
en Grecia y por lo tanto, en el centro del mundo griego
(Homero, Ilíada, Odisea).
The world of Olympus, seat of the gods, who observed, meddled and played in the world of human-beings, also had
mythical utopian characteristics and was located in Greece,

Homero lo describió como un lugar totalmente apartado
del mundo humano. Nunca se vio sacudido por los vientos, ni mojado por la lluvia, ni la nieve caía sobre él, el aire
era siempre fresco y puro, el cielo era claro y sin nubes,
y una blancura radiante se cernía sobre él. En resumen,
era un paraíso de otro mundo, aislado del mundo de los
humanos y de sus luchas.
Homer described it as a place totally apart from the human
world and as one which stood forever (Odyssey 6.41-47). It
was never shaken by the winds, nor was wet with rain, nor did
the snow fall upon it, but the air was always fresh and pure,
clear and cloudless and a radiant whiteness hovered over it.
In short, it was an otherworldly paradise, isolated from the
world of humans and their strife.
Cuando estoy como kibitzer en BBO me siento un poco
en el Olimpo… Allí abajo observo a cada uno de los jugadores viendo solo sus 13 cartas, mientras yo tengo el
privilegio de ver las 52. Mientras ellos tratan de descubrir
la posición de una cierta carta clave, yo me río de sus esfuerzos…sabiendo donde están cada una de ellas…Ohh…
alli un aprieto en una mano que se ganaba con la finesse…
When I am kibitzing in BBO I feel a bit on Mount Olympus …
down there I observe each of the players seeing only their 13
cards, while I have the privilege of seeing all 52. While they try
to discover the position of a certain key card, I laugh at their
efforts … knowing where they are all of them… Ohh … down
one, on a squezze in a hand that my granny would have won
with a finesse …
Y lo más llamativo, es que en mi caso, son los dioses del
bridge los que están jugando, y yo una simple mortal la
que está observándolos…Así reflexionaba esta mañana cuando empezó el Campeonato Sudamericano de
Equipos de Bridge en Medellin, Colombia y en el primer
match que transmitió BBO, estaban en una de las mesas
Auken-Welland y en la otra Lall-Milner.
And the most striking thing is that in my case, the gods are
down there playing bridge, and I, a mere mortal is watching from above… These were my thoughts this morning when
the South American Bridge Teams Championship begun in
Medellin, Colombia and the first match that aired BBO was
one where Auken-Welland was in one of the tables and LallMilner in the other.

mas corazón… Ana falló, Milner cubrió con su rey de trebol…la declarante tuvo que entregar al final un diamante para una abajo = -200.
En la otra mesa la subasta que había
comenzado parecida… finalizó de
otra manera:
Cuando Hammer, reabrió con doblo
y Auken escuchó el paso de Oeste…
Redobló pidiéndole a su compañero
que buscara otro lugar donde jugar.
Welland eligió su otro palo largo…
y dijo 2♦. Piza dobló y ese fue el contrato final.

Welland ganó con el A♥ , adelantó
el A♠ y jugó otra espada. Cuando
Hammer volvió el 10♦, tomó con su
A♦ y jugó un trebol chico. Piza ganó
la baza con el 10♣ , y volvió el 9♦ .
Welland ganó la baza con el K♦ y falló
un trebol en la mesa viendo caer el as
en Este. Falló una espada en la mano,
jugó corazón a la dama del muerto y
continuó con diamante, dejando en la
mano a Piza, que al final tuvo que entregar la dama de trebol.

The declarer won the lead with the A♥,
crossed to the dummy with the Q♥ and
run the 8♣, Milner won the trick with his
10♣ and switched to the 3♠. Ana Alonso
covered Lall’s J with her A♠ and played
the 5♣. Lall won with the ace to play a
heart.
Alonso ruffed with the 9♣ but Milner
overruffed with the J♣ to return another
spade. Lall won the trick with his Q♠
and more heart… Ana ruffed and Milner
covered with his king…At the end she
had to lose a diamond for one down =

When Hammer, reopened with double
and Auken listened West’s pass … she
redoubled, asking her partner to find
another place to play. Welland chose his
other long suit…
and said 2♦. Piza doubled.

compañero a elegir uno de los menores. Después de escuchar que su
compañero prefería el palo de trebol,
esperando alguna ayuda en ese palo
declaró el slam… Mala suerte, el único
honor de su compañero estaba en su
fallo… Una abajo.
En la otra mesa, la pareja en E/O jugaba NT débil, así que Piza abrió su
mano. Auken aprovechó para mostrar
los mayores, Hammer mostró su mano
débil con palo de espada y Welland
mostró su mano fuerte con un cuebid.
Piza dobló, y Auken pasó esperando
la reacción de su compañero, Welland
redobló pidiendo mas información, y
cuando Auken dijo 4♥, cambio a 5♦…
todos pasaron.

Welland aflojó la salida, y Piza cambió a una espada chica. El declarante ganó la baza con el as del muerto
desprendiéndose del corazon perdedor de su mano. Vino a su mano con
trebol, fallo un trebol en el muerto y
volvió a su mano fallando una espada.
Destriunfo y se tendió, reclamando 12
bazas. 10 IMPs para Milner.
Quizás, si Piza hubiera observado un
poquito mas al muerto, con su singleton de trebol y un solo triunfo…hubiera vuelto el 10 para dejar sin posibilidades al declarante…
En la siguiente tablilla, Piza rápidamente recuperó los 10 IMPs anteriores
cuando declaró y cumplió 3NT, mientras que en la otra mesa solo jugaban
un parcial a diamante.

1NT. Auken took the opportunity to
show the majors, Hammer showed
his weak hand with long spades, and
Welland showed his strong hand with
a cuebid. Piza doubled, and Auken
passed waiting for his partner reaction,
Welland redoubled and when Auken
said 4♥, he defined the final contract in
5♦… all passed.

Y siguiendo con lo de mi palco en el Monte Olimpo, tuve la
oportunidad de ver una batalla entre Dioses del Olimpo.
En la tercera ronda del Round Robin se enfrentaron los
equipos Welland y Chagas.
I was still in my box on Mount Olympus, when I had the opportunity to see a battle between Gods of the Olympus. In
the third round of the Round Robin of the Open Teams of the

the Chagas team.

Bianchedi tuvieron una visión diferente de
la mano, y elevaron la apuesta al nivel de

Welland abrió de 1♣ , Bianchedi paso,
Auken también, y Agustín mostró su mano
con la voz de 1NT. Alejandro interpretó que
para el 1NT de Agustín, el tenia lo suficiente
como para jugar game y dijo 3NT.

novena baza después de ganar sus cuatro tréboles…
