Fourth Sunday of Advent December 20, 2015 A NEW ORDER “O, Little Town of Bethlehem.” A Philadelphia clergyman named Phillips Brooks penned these popular words back in the mid-1800s, but the prophet Micah could have used them first. Micah knew that from small packages great treasures come. In today’s first reading, he knew that from tiny Bethlehem would come the Lord. The writer in Hebrews explains that Christ came to us to do the will of God by establishing a new order and by becoming our perfect sacrifice. And Luke tells us that Elizabeth and John, the infant in her womb, understand that great and wondrous things are at hand with the coming of the Lord. This is the Fourth Sunday of Advent. Soon we celebrate anew the fruit of Mary’s womb. As we are told in Hebrews, Jesus’ new order is being established even today. And as Micah proclaims, his greatness is reaching even now to the ends of the earth. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. This week we celebrate Jesus' Birth. It is the event that made visible to the world the fulfillment of all of our desires. And, of course, we are still in need of more grace and mercy. We are still in need of Christ to be born into our world. We are still in need of light in the darkness of our fears and doubts. In Christ is the fulfillment of the promise given to us in Numbers 24:17, "A star shall arise from Jacob and from the roots of Israel shall spring a royal scepter." As we enter these final days of preparation for Christmas, I want to share with you an except from a poem describing Jesus as the Star: From a Poem by, Boris Pasternak. "Among them, unseen until now, More dimly lit than an oil lamp Hung in a watchman's window, A Star shone in the road to Bethlehem. It rose in the sky like a haystack aflame, Of fiery straw and thatch. All creation shuddered in awe, Astonished by this new Star. Its scarlet nimbus grew wider and deeper-A portent for all to see; Three stargazers saw the blaze from afar; They hurried after its beckoning light." Feliz Navidad! I pray that all of us keep our eyes and desires fixed on Jesus alone and hurry after the beckoning Light! Merry Christmas! Feliz Navidad! God bless you, Fr. Do you prepare for Mass each week or do you just show up and expect to be entertained?
