Greetings,
We are coming to the end of our Church
Year and the Year for Mercy. It has been a great
year of renewal in the Church. During this year
our Holy Father has set the tone for families. He
has helped to show mercy to those who are struggling from separation and divorce. He has
reached out to the Homeless, the prisoner and
the dying. He has helped to join peoples of different religions together. He has set the example of
how all of us must live in this world.
The Year of Mercy may be officially over
but it does not mean that we go back to our old
ways. Mercy must always be at the heart of how
we live our lives. The works of mercy must always be at work. Our Holy Father has given us
an example of how the Gospel must come alive in
our lives.
This weekend is Christ the King. Christ is
our only true ruler and we must always follow his
direction to love one another. The criminal at
Jesus’ side sought out mercy and forgiveness.
“Lord remember me when you come into your
Kingdom.” And Jesus’ response is priceless.
“This day you will be with me in Paradise.” That
is our King!
The other criminal however desired to remain in his sins. One of the reasons for all of the
discord is that we are lacking a solid relationship
with the King of Kings. Our sins keep us from letting Jesus into our lives. Presidents come and go
but Jesus is everlasting.
We ask Jesus for guidance, to be with Him
in Paradise. Our choice to follow Jesus is lived
out in the reality that we show mercy toward others. We continue to feed the hungry and embrace
the lowly. The year might be over but mercy
never ends. With our King by our side we face all
that is set before us.
Have a great week!
Your friend,
Fr. John
Fr John Henderson

WINDOW INTO DIVINE MERCY
The Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy
closes today, the 20th of November. Just as the
pilgrims from World Youth Day were asked what
they would take back home with them, so we can
also ask ourselves what this Jubilee Year of Mercy has meant to us and how it has incorporated
itself into our lives. As Pope Francis stood before
the Holy Door at St. Peter's Basilica and released
the papal bull Misericordiae Vultus in which the
opening words are, “Jesus Christ is the face of the
Father's mercy,” he announced the motto for the
Jubilee Year of Mercy, “Merciful like the Father.”
The message of Pope Francis' pontificate is mercy
as was the message of the pontificate of St. Pope
John Paul II. Both popes teach us that mercy is
the answer to evil and we find in St. Pope John
Paul II's last book Memory and Identity, “The
limit imposed upon evil, of which man is both
perpetrator and victim, is ultimately Divine Mercy.” The Jubilee Year of Mercy offered us many
graces.
One of the greatest summaries of God's
Mercy is the Image of Divine Mercy. Our adoration chapel has an almost life size image from the
convent in Cracow, Poland where St. Faustina
lived for several years and died. The image was
also blessed there. The image is often referred to
as an icon. Like an icon, it offers us a richness of
meaning which calls us to meditation. The image
leads us into the interior of God.
In the image, Jesus stands against a black
background. The only light on the image comes
from Jesus himself. Jesus stands in our darkness
found in our pains, sinfulness, anxieties, blindness, doubts, and problems. Jesus accepts us as
we are, wanting to bring us His mercy and lead
us into the light. Pope Francis has told us that the
greatest heresy of today is that man defines his
own faith and how he understands it and not how
God teaches us. This attitude sometimes also applies to those who go to Mass every Sunday. Man
places himself in the center of his existence and
thus places himself in darkness. When Jesus becomes the center of our existence, we learn to live
in the light according to God's will receiving His
mercy. We need to look into our lives and find
the place where our darkness is, where we do not
allow God to enter. In the image, we find Jesus
walking towards us with His hand raised in blessing. It is He who goes out to meet us first.
There are two rays coming from the unseen in the image heart of Jesus. One ray is red
and the other is pale. These rays represent the
graces poured out on mankind especially through
Baptism and the Eucharist. They represent the
sacraments as well as the Church. Jesus tells us
that the two rays were born in His heart as it was
opened by a lance. The graces are given to us
through the Church, which offers us an intimate
relationship with God. God is mercy and He invites us into His interior, into the interior of His
heart from which His graces flow.
Jesus did not come to tell us about Himself. He came to tell us about the Father. He came
to us because the Father sent Him. He came to
renew the image of God in us. Jesus is mercy because the Father is mercy. He is love because the
Father is love. In the heart from which the two
rays come is an immense world of the Father.
This heart is filled with love. The Holy Spirit who
is love also dwells in His heart. The Father gave
us His Son as well as the Spirit and the three
forming one God love one another and call us to
love. To understand Jesus, we need to look at the
Father and the Spirit. Looking into the heart, we
can ask ourselves who God is. God is the Father
who loves us and who we have a right to precisely
because He is our Father.
The rays in the image are roadways to the
Father, which should increase our trust in God
the Father of mercy. When we form a good relationship with Jesus, we learn who the Father is.
The Holy Spirit brings Jesus to us and brings us
our spiritual life.
At the bottom of the Image of Divine Mercy are the words, Jesus, I trust in You. Trust in
Jesus is the key to receiving graces.
Continued on Page 8
Page 8
Continued from page 7
Jesus told St. Faustina that we receive graces in
proportion to how much trust we have. T r u s t
is like a vessel. The greater the vessel, the greater the number of graces it will hold which are
drawn from Jesus' “fountain of mercy”. In her
diary St. Faustina wrote the words of Jesus to
her, “By means of this image I will grant many
graces to souls. It is to be a reminder of the demands of My mercy, because even the strongest
faith is of no avail without works”.
Divine Mercy can be summed up in two
words, which are mercy and trust. We are required to show mercy to everyone at all times
and are to trust in Jesus who is mercy itself.
These two elements are the foundation of how
we should live. Jesus told St. Faustina that we
would be judged on mercy.
With this bulletin, The Window into Divine Mercy closes, as The Jubilee Year of Mercy
has ended, but it should be the beginning of our
learning to become merciful as the Father is and
more trusting in God who only wants our good
and who loves us immensely. It's all about love,
being merciful, and trusting Jesus. What could
be more beautiful?!!

HISPANIC MINISTRY
Saludos,
Tu amigo,
Fr. John

Evangelio Lc. 23; 35-43
Cuando Jesús estaba ya crucificado, las autoridades
le hacían muecas, diciendo: "A otros ha salvado;
mismo y a nosotros.
