The 10:45 am and 12:15 pm Masses will be combined into one Mass at 11:30 am. The Sunday Mass schedule from July 3th through September 4th will be: Saturday Eve: 5:00 pm Sunday: 7:30 am 9:15 am (Spanish) 11:30 am 5:00 pm JULY 3, 2016 4 FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…… Last weekend, we heard Jesus remind us that before we follow Him, we should consider the cost; and that once on the journey with Him, we should not look back. Being His disciples means: putting our life with Christ first. This Sunday we hear that to be a disciple is to be “on a mission” throughout the journey with Christ. Jesus, in the Gospel of Luke, sends seventy –two disciples out on the mission, carrying a message of hope and mercy. Why were seventy-two sent out? Because there was too much to do for the Twelve. Jesus needed more hands and feet to spread His good news of Salvation. He also told His disciples to recruit more people for the mission, “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; pray for more workers for the harvest.” God is still looking for more people who can take the Gospel of Joy to the remote corners of the world. Jesus warns his disciples that it would be a serious task. People will oppose you at every step of your mission. He says, “I am sending you like lambs among wolves.” However, I will not leave you alone.” Let’s learn to rely on God for everything. Happy Fourth of July! This is a National holiday celebrated in our country, and by an international community especially in our neighborhood. Today we celebrate a freedom and independence that really isn’t free. It has cost each of us some of our independence and has helped us to be interdependent on each other. Unless we are Native Americans, we are all descendants, children of immigrants, or immigrants ourselves who live in a country that upholds “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” which claims them as “inalienable rights.” Our readings today are full of reminders of blessings and mercy, of freedom that was won upon a cross of suffering by a savior who spoke of peace, mercy and justice; we all bear the marks of that cross. Jesus calls us not only to follow Him but to “go in front” of the crowd and speak against cries of intolerance, violence, exclusion, hate and greed. That is the cost of freedom. This weekend, as we view the fireworks and lights at Lady Liberty, let us recall her words: “…give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free … send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” As we celebrate and give thanks to God for the gift of our freedom and independence, and as Christians and citizen of the world, let us remember that we are called to use our freedom in ways that help and heal each other rather than hurt and destroy one another. May God help our nation to walk in the way of peace and justice. God bless you, Fr. John Francis ST. NICK’S 100th ANNIVERSARY In 1916, plans were made to start a parish in the area of the Queensboro Hospital for Communicable Diseases, which is the location of Queens General Medical Center. Property was purchased in January of 1917 and a church was built on the corner of Parsons Blvd. and Union Turnpike by October of that same year. The area and the parish have developed into a diversified community with people of many different languages and cultures. This is St. Nick’s today! In order to celebrate our 100th Anniversary as a parish community, a different event has been planned each month to bring us together to celebrate, to pray and to work.
