Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 18, 2016 God . . . wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth. — 1 Timothy 2:4 OUR RESPONSIBILITY FOR OTHERS The Second Vatican Council has called us to envision the Church as the people of God. As a community of believers we are responsible for our brothers and sisters, their salvation, their journey of faith, their physical well-being. Many of the documents of Vatican II and volumes of work since the mid-1960s give us advice, guidelines, and encouragement to take care of one another: the poor, the elderly, the unborn, the broken, the infirm. Because Vatican II is part of our recent history—indeed many of us were already born—this may strike us as a new and revolutionary idea. But today’s readings show us the agelessness of the issue of social justice. Eight hundred years before Christ was born, Amos warned the wealthy not to cheat the poor. In Paul’s first letter to Timothy, he encourages all prayers to be for all people; and finally, the Gospel urges the wise use of money. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. On September 4, two weeks ago, Pope Francis officially made Mother Teresa of Calcutta a Saint and she is now Saint Teresa of Calcutta. Most all of us have heard of Mother Teresa, and have known of her works for years. Her story is our story, and she lived her life full of faith and the love of God, as a good steward of God`s gifts to her. Mother Teresa of Calcutta was originally from Albania. While serving in India as a school teacher, one day she looked a poor person in the face who was begging for help. She saw Christ looking back at her. Called to be a sister of charity, she devoted the rest of her life to the poorest of the poor. She saw the face of Jesus in the faces of every woman, man, child she ministered to in the streets of Calcutta. Mother Teresa was a disciple of Jesus Christ yet it did not come easy for her. When one reads of her life, she met many challenges yet followed where the Lord lead her. She opened wide the doors of mercy and charity for the poorest of the poor in Calcutta, and she directed her missionaries of Charity throughout the world to serve" the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, and all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people who have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone". But rather than admiring her, maybe we could all try to imitate her, in whatever way is available to us in our current state of life. She understood that stewardship is more important than anything else. Not all of us could do as Mother Teresa did, but we can all look at our lives to see how we can become or continue to be disciples of Jesus Christ and good stewards of God`s blessings, gifts and talents given to us. On this Ministry Fair Sunday in our parish, may Saint Teresa of Calcutta pray for us !!
