Introduction: Celebrating a Charismatic Jubilee
by Fr. Bob Hogan, BBD
“Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks, for this is
the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise
prophetic utterances. Test everything; retain what is good. Refrain from every kind of
evil” (1 Thess 5:16-22). A Jubilee is a time of celebrating, rejoicing and giving thanks.
It is also a time to look back and learn from the years that have passed. By welcoming
a process of testing and purifying our experiences, we can retain what is good; refrain
from what is evil or unhelpful; and stir up, rather than quench, the work of the Holy
Spirit.
2017 is a Jubilee Year for Charismatic Renewal in the Catholic Church. It is the 50th
anniversary of the events that led to a surprising current of grace that sprang up after
the Second Vatican Council which came to be known as the Catholic Charismatic Renewal.
This movement is in 238 countries, influencing over 120 million Catholics. International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services (ICCRS) has its offices in the Vatican;
works closely with the Pontifical Council for the Laity; and is recognized as an Ecclesial
Movement in the Catholic Church with Pontifical status (official recognition by the
pope and directly under the pope). The popes since Vatican Council II have called the
Church to a greater awareness of the importance of the Holy Spirit.
I want to challenge those who have been called to serve the Church through Catholic Charismatic Renewal not to settle for a narrow vision of the Holy Spirit’s role. In this
Jubilee Year, may those involved in this Ecclesial Movement seek to learn from the
popes’ and bishops’ messages to the Movement; from the history of Catholic Charismatic Renewal; from our mistakes and failures; and from the many ways that God has
used Charismatic Renewal for the good of the Church.
Come, let us celebrate! “Come, Holy Spirit, come!”

This movement is in 238 countries, influencing over 120 million Catholics. International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services (ICCRS) has its offices in the Vatican;
works closely with the Pontifical Council for the Laity; and is recognized as an Ecclesial

This movement is in 238 countries, influencing over 120 million Catholics. International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services (ICCRS) has its offices in the Vatican;
works closely with the Pontifical Council for the Laity; and is recognized as an Ecclesial

This movement is in 238 countries, influencing over 120 million Catholics. International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services (ICCRS) has its offices in the Vatican;
works closely with the Pontifical Council for the Laity; and is recognized as an Ecclesial
