Our Lady of the Assumption Mission Statement
We, as faithful followers of Jesus Christ, create, nurture, and maintain a community of love
through worship, reconciliation, healing, formation, education and service.
Through Word and Eucharist, we seek the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit,
embracing the love of our Creator in each thought, word, and action.
As humble servants of God, we remain faithful to the teachings of the Holy Roman Catholic Church,
waiting in joyful hope for our Lord’s coming.
Weekly Reflection
Loving God and One Another
Amar a Dios y al prójimo
Today’s readings and prayers bring us to the understanding that Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies and laws. We focus on the Ten Commandments which are enumerated in the first reading
from the Book of Exodus. The first three commandments govern our relationship with God as we
acknowledge that He is the one and only God, whose
name we reverence and whose day we keep holy. In
today’s gospel, when Jesus drives the money changers
from the temple, He reminds us that these three precepts must govern our relationship with His Father. He
challenges the Jews to remember the commandments
and He tells them that there will be a new sacrifice. The
old ways will give way to the new as He promises to
“destroy this temple and in three days raise it up.” He
is speaking of His passion and resurrection which they
do not understand. Paul references this misunderstanding in the epistle when he writes, “we proclaim
Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.” Jesus has become the Paschal Sacrifice. The refrain of today’s psalm captures the joy of
this realization, “Lord, you have the words of everlasting life.” The psalm reminds us that
when we embrace God’s precepts, “the
fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever.” This is the relationship we seek
with the Father, to be in awe of His everlasting love. If our relationship with
God is holy, our relationships with one
another will also be holy. The two are
intrinsically woven. The commandments show us the way to love one
another. We rejoice knowing that Jesus
showed us how to embrace the commandments which ensures us a path
way to heaven.
eterno. Si nuestra relación
con Dios es santa, nuestra
relación con los demás también será santa. Nos regocijamos sabiendo que Jesús
nos enseño como abrazar
los mandamientos que nos
aseguran el camino al cielo.

What’s Going on Around the Church?
MASS INTENTIONS FOR March 09 — March 15
The security camera project is complete. There are 22
cameras total throughout the church, rectory, parish center and school, both indoor and outdoor. In the next
month or so, our volunteer construction team will evaluate the location of all cameras and make any recommendations regarding positioning of existing cameras and/or
the need for additional cameras. Thank you to our construction team for overseeing this project and to Taft
Electric for making a generous donation that made this
project possible.
Exterior Lighting – We are working with Taft Electric to
evaluate our outdoor lighting needs« Stay tuned for
more information in the next few weeks.
Church Entrance - We completed grinding off of the overlay on the concrete in front of the church and had the
concrete sealed. We will now work on getting the edges
on the top and bottom steps painted to help delineate
between the steps. If you have any questions please contact Lauren Burns at [email protected].

Safe Environment
DID YOU KNOW?
Teaching children about boundaries and safe
touches is healthy
Teaching children about boundaries and safe touches is
not sex education. There are many safety issues we
teach children: bike safety, water safety, fire prevention,
driver's training, etc. Personal safety programs should
have age appropriate lessons that give children the skills
they need to protect themselves without frightening them.
Keeping children unaware of the dangers around them
does not keep them safe. Predators count
on children not knowing what to do. For
more information, please visit:

LA CUARESMA EN OLA
Synod of Bishops

In preparation for the Synod of Bishops to be held in October 4–25, 2015 on “The Vocation and Mission of the
Family in the Church and Contemporary World,” the Vatican has asked the world’s bishops for a “broad consultation.” In order to facilitate the response from the Archdiocese, an on-line survey has been established that enables Catholics to respond to a set of questions that the
Vatican has proposed for reflection. The survey can be
accessed on the Archdiocesan home page: http://www.laarchdiocese.org/
or
directly
at:
http://survey.laarchdiocese.org/. Responses are to be made by Monday,
March 9 in order to be included in the report that the
Archdiocese will present to the United States Catholic
Conference.
 Cada Viernes de Cuaresma: cena en el
Centro

Blessing of Food on Holy Saturday
In many Easter European countries it is a tradition to
have a basket of food blessed on Holy Saturday, a practice dating to the 15th century, or earlier and one which is
still maintained by many families. Our
Lady of the Assumption Church is
keeping with this tradition and will have
the Blessing of Food Baskets on Holy
Saturday at 12:00 noon in the church.

Lenten Prayer Vigil for Life
-8-
For more than 60 years, men from our local parishes
have taken time from the overwhelming busyness of life
to go to the tranquil Franciscan setting of Malibu to quiet
their souls and calm their minds. They reflect on the multifold blessings God has bestowed on them. Most men
arrive at approximately 4pm on Friday evening. Dinner is
served from 5-7pm. If you would like to attend, the web
site for packet and info is www.serraretreat.com or
(310)456-6631. Any questions, please contact Jerry
Thomas, 805-647-4898.
