Pastor’s Corner
Unfortunately, in contemporary society, just as in the time of Jesus, the prevailing
mentality is a hedonist one, that considers pleasure and personal well-being as the
only goals in life. That pagan mentality is manifest everywhere, and it invades even
Christian environments. There are many Christians who reject love when it
involves sacrifice, and look only for wealth and pleasure. For some, sacrifice and the
cross are meaningless. They think that having a good time, dancing, playing, eating,
drinking and spending time doing nothing is what life is all about. Without realizing
it, they are wasting their life. Paradoxically, a life of pleasure is an empty and sterile
life. On the contrary, a self-denying life is always vigorous and fertile. That is what
Jesus teaches us today, when he says: “Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever
hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life.” This means that man’s
happiness and salvation do not lay in living selfishly for himself, but in dying to sin
and living for God and for others. Just like the grain of wheat which “if it dies
produces much fruit”, by dying to sin we live for God and obtain salvation.
Many thanks to the organizers and participants of the Black and White Gala and
especially to the members of the parents association for their generous help.
Thanks as well to Marta Vargas for her excellent presentation Del Desierto a la Vida
during our Lenten nights of reflection in Spanish.
significa sacrificio, y sólo buscan dinero y placer.

St. Turibius of Mogrovejo, March 23—Born in Spain, he
became professor of law at the highly reputed University of
Salamanca. His learning and virtuous reputation led to his
beinh named Archbishop of Lima, Peru, in May 1579. He
began his mission baptizing and teaching the natives. Three
times he traversed the 450,000 square kilometers
(170,000 sq mi) of his diocese, generally on foot, baptizing
and confirming nearly one half million souls, among them St.
Rose of Lima and St. Martin de Porres. He built roads,
schoolhouses and chapels, many hospitals and convents, and
at Lima, in 1591, founded the first seminary in the western
hemisphere.

The POPE SPEAKS/HABLA EL PAPA
Lenten Message, 2015
As individuals too, we have are tempted by indifference. Flooded with news reports
and troubling images of human suffering, we often feel our complete inability to
help. What can we do to avoid being caught up in this spiral of distress and
powerlessness? First, we can pray in communion with the Church on earth and in
heaven. Let us not underestimate the power of so many voices united in prayer!
Second, we can help by acts of charity, reaching out to both those near and far
through the Church’s many charitable organizations. Third, the suffering of others is
a call to conversion, since their need reminds me of the uncertainty of my own life
and my dependence on God and my brothers and sisters. If we humbly implore
God’s grace and accept our own limitations, we will trust in the infinite possibilities
which God’s love holds out to us. We will also be able to resist the diabolical
temptation of thinking that by our own efforts we can save the world and ourselves.

A huge thank you to all of our Gala Committee
members who worked so incredibly hard over the past
several months to make this year’s Black & White Ball a
possibility! A special thank you to Renne Domenech
and Angie Triana who co-chaired the event.
We greatly appreciate all the time, passion and heart
that these members give to our church and school.
The Miami-Dade County Youth Fair &
Exposition supports youth achievement by
providing opportunities for students to
showcase their talents and compete against
other students.
This year, St. Hugh Catholic School
competed in the drama division for the
first time. Students were asked to select
and memorize an excerpt from a play,
dramatic literary work or an anthology of
monologues and develop it into an audition
piece to be performed in front of several
judges. It is with great pride that we announce that all three students that participated won
first place in the solo monologues category. Our winning students were as follows:

Isabella De Sousa: “I’m the Greatest Star” from Funny Girl

Valeria Bigott: “Queendom” from You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown

Alexandro Garces: “Marc Antony’s Speech” from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar.
Congratulations to our talented students and to our wonderful music teacher,
Ms. Gentzschein who helped them prepare for the competition.
