Fr. Paul’s Message
The following is a excerpt from Pope
Francis’ most recent apostolic exhortation, Amoris Latitia (nos. 27-30). It makes for a beautiful
meditation:
with the bands of love, and I became to
them as one who eases the yoke on their
jaws, and I bent down to them and fed
them” (Hos 11: 1, 3-4).
Christ proposed as the distinctive sign
of his disciples the law of love and the gift of
self for others. He did so in stating a principle
that fathers and mothers tend to embody in
their own lives: “No one has greater love
than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s
friends” (Jn 15: 13). Love also bears fruit in
mercy and forgiveness. We see this in a particular way in the scene of the woman caught in
adultery; in front of the Temple, the woman is
surrounded by her accusers, but later, alone
with Jesus, she meets not condemnation but
the admonition to lead a more worthy life.
With a gaze of faith and love, grace and fidelity, we have contemplated the relationship between human families and the divine Trinity.
The word of God tells us that the family is entrusted to a man, a woman and their children,
so that they may become a communion of
persons in the image of the union of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Against
this backdrop of
love so central to
the Christian experience of marriage and the
family, another
virtue stands out,
one often overlooked in our
world of frenetic
and superficial
relationships. It is
tenderness. Let
us consider the
moving words of
Psalm 131. As in
other biblical texts, the union between the
Lord and his faithful ones is expressed in terms
of parental love. Here we see a delicate and
tender intimacy between mother and child: the
image is that of a babe sleeping in his mother’s arms after being nursed. As the Hebrew
word gamûl suggests, the infant is now fed
and clings to his mother, who takes him to her
bosom. There is a closeness that is conscious
and not simply biological. Drawing on this image, the Psalmist sings: “I have calmed and
quieted my soul, like a child quieted at its
mother’s breast” (Ps 131: 2). We can also
think of the touching words that the prophet
Hosea puts on God’s lips: “When Israel was a
child, I loved him… I took them up in my
arms… I led them with cords of compassion,
Begetting and raising children, for its
part, mirrors God’s creative work. The family is
called to join in daily prayer, to read the word
of God and to share in Eucharistic communion,
and thus to grow
in love and become ever more
fully a temple in
which the Spirit
dwells. Every family should look to
the icon of the
Holy Family of
Nazareth. Its daily
life had its share of
burdens and even
nightmares, as
when they met
with Herod’s implacable violence.
This last was an
experience that,
sad to say, continues to afflict the many refugee families who in our day feel rejected and
helpless. Like the Magi, our families are invited
to contemplate the Child and his Mother, to
bow down and worship him. Like Mary, they
are asked to face their family’s challenges with
courage and serenity, in good times and bad,
and to keep in their heart the great things
which God has done. The treasury of Mary’s
heart also contains the experiences of every
family, which she cherishes. For this reason,
she can help us understand the meaning of
these experiences and to hear the message
God wishes to communicate through the life
of our families.

Fr u to del
intimidad consciente y no meramente biológica.

VOCATIONS CORNER
PRIESTS AS A SPIRITUAL FATHER
In a special way the church has referred to the homes of the
faithful as the "domestic church" where values, morals, social
graces, right conduct, faith, and piety are fostered. The love
of families, the love of husband and wife, the love of mothers
and fathers are fruitful that build the kingdom of God. This
Sunday we celebrate the role of fathers in society, culture, and
in our very own homes. As we continue to build a vocation
culture there is an aspect in the priestly and consecrated life
that we often dismiss, which is that consecrated persons too
are called to be fruitful in their chaste celibacy. We would like
to share a reflection by Redemptorist Father Dennis J. Billy,
C.Ss.R. who speaks about connection of priesthood and spiritual fatherhood:
Since Jesus told His disciples not to call anyone on earth
their father (Mt. 23:9), some of us may be wondering why
we give our priests this title. The answer requires some explaining. We obviously do not call a priest “Father,” in the
same sense that Jesus called God “Abba, Father” (Mk.14:36).
God alone is our true Father. A priest is a father in another
sense.
When he preaches, he breaks open God’s Word and tells the
people not what they wish to hear, but what they actually
need to hear if they are to deepen their relationship with
Christ. When he celebrates Mass, he stands in the place of
Christ and provides spiritual food and nourishment for those
in attendance.
When he anoints the sick and ministers to the dying, he fortifies others in their weakness and prepares them for the
journey ahead that will bring them either back to health or
to a new life beyond the pale of death.
As spiritual fathers, priests have many responsibilities that
spill over into other areas of life. They guide, protect and
nourish all those who are under their care, especially those
who are defenseless and without a voice.
They look out for the needs of the poor and the marginalized, those who can no longer fend for themselves. They are
deeply concerned for the well-being of those at the very
beginning of life’s journey and those at the very end. They
stand up for the dignity of the unborn, the handicapped, the

hemos dado respuestas distintas.
Jesús no buscaba admiradores o
fans, sino seguidores e imitadores.
su hijo para salvarnos. “Como el Padre me ha amado, yo los he amado a ustedes”, nos decía Jesús;

DAILY MASS INTENTIONS
GET ON THE BUS
The Get on the Bus trip to the Corona Women’s Prison
took place on Friday May 27th. The bus departed St.
Margaret Mary Church at 7:30 am and returned at 4:30
pm giving the children a good long visit with their
moms. As usual our volunteers worked relessly to
make this event a success. The members of our parish
were generous as they have been each me we have
requested funding. A total of $5,460.00 was collected
on one Sunday. You are terrific. Our volunteer commi ee is looking forward to next year and perhaps visi ng the men’s prison. Below is a short story of the experience of two volunteers who traveled on the bus and
volunteered to take and distribute family photos.
There’s the old saying, “A picture is worth a thousand
words.” A million words could not begin to describe
the outpouring of love in the pictures I took during our
recent Get on the Bus visit to the California Ins tu on
for Women in Corona, CA.
My wife and I were asked to take family portraits during
the visit. Standing in front of a tropical beach scene
painted on a wall in a corner of the prison, each child
took an individual picture with his or her mom along
with a family portrait. So many words might be used to
capture what we saw: happiness, playfulness, laughter,
along with hugs, kisses, and tears. One mom, standing
alongside her son, paused in amazement at how much
he had grown. In each picture, it was easy to see the
joy of being together . . . even if for only half a day.
Thank you, St. Margaret Mary, for making this trip possible. Your generosity was a profound gi impac ng
every mom and every child in a way words cannot fully
describe.

St. Margaret Mary supports Zambian
Students for the 10th Year!
17 High School students and 5 college students
are the beneficiaries this year. We are working for permanent changes in Chilubia, a rural Zambian community. Girls
are now staying in school past sixth grade. Before long educated students will be available to work in rural areas.
In the past seven years, we have raised up to $12,000 annually (last year $9000). The monies have provided primarily tuion support, but also solar panels (providing electricity for

Fr. Rodger, a priest who served here for 4 years, says that the
children we support come from ordinary families that cannot
support them. Your financial support has made a huge impact in the lives of these children. These contribu ons have
brought hope to the children of Chulibi Basic School. The connua on in school of female students is especially gra fying.
If you wish to donate please put check made out to St. Margaret Mary in an envelope labelled Zambia and place in the
church collec on or bring to the parish office. The deadline is

Our Seminarian, Emmanuel Delfin is spending the summer in Mexico on a Spanish immersion . He will be sending us regular updates
on his experience. Please keep him and his classmates in your prayers.
What a way to begin my immersion into
Spanish: Aguascalientes. My connecting
flight from Houston to Aguascalientes was
cancelled due to a storm that grounded
many flights. We couldn't even land our
flight from California in Houston and were
detoured to land in San Antonio and were
detained until the storm subsided. Upon
arriving in Houston, my connecting flight was replaced for
the next flight which was the following day. I stayed at a
nearby hotel but had to wake up in 4 hours to make the
flight.
After landing in Aguascalientes and having gone through
customs, I was very happy to be greeted by the program
director as I walked out into the lobby. The pastor with
whom I would be staying was also there to welcome me. I
immediately broke into the most Spanish I could muster
with many pauses in between sentences reaching for the
right words in my mind. After much introductions between
us, Padre Chuy (Jose Maria) asked me about my vocation
story, which took me aback since I had not prepared for such
a heavy loaded question. To my surprise, I managed to describe my experience from secular living to that under our
loving Christ's.
- at menial laborious jobs. The way they described their
work, gave me a lot of respect for their vocations as they
reminded me of the labor and duties monks do in some monasteries. But when I thought back on the bit of construction
work I did one summer, I wondered how I even managed to
survive all the sweating under the sun. Oh yeah, I remember
- I was the beer runner at the end of the day. Comradery and
beer was payment enough!
P. Chuy has plans for me to participate in a few canta
misa this week as well as visiting some parishioners who are
home sick. He has already had me introduce myself to the 2 daily
masses here and to tell them my vocation story. I stumbled
through the longest few minutes in my life. After saying all that
I can say, P. Chuy commented to everyone how my Spanish is
better than his. Of course we all laughed and my face turned even
more red.
I love being here in this parish neighborhood. Everywhere
we go, the people knew the pastor and greeted him with respect and love. They sincerely adored him. But I know that
they adore Christ and his eternal love, which they see in P.
Chuy. We all need to express our love for God, and as P.
Chuy said in his homily last night, what better way to do
this than to love those who is difficult to love in our lives as
Jesus commanded in the gospel. And that is how I saw what
I met two other seminarians for the diocese of Aguascalientes everyone saw - we all saw the loving words of God in P.
Chuy, and were thus compelled to respond in kind. It is so
who were also staying at the parish, a few years under my
level. I loved the way that they can pray so eloquently with inspiring to be in a place where everyone share your faith.
such beautiful Spanish! I longed to be so expressive in their How I want to ever more live this reality back in our archdiocese, especially to those who don't know us and our love for
language of my own relationship with God. I learned that
they must work during their summer stay here at the parish Christ!
