Foundations of Catholicism Foundations of Catholicism is an 11-week course on the basic teachings, beliefs, history, and practices of the Catholic faith. All adults are invited to attend. Wed. evenings 6:30– 8:00pm at the new hall. Week 5 topic: "The Mass & the Eucharist" Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord ATTENTION ALL FUTURE GODPARENTS! It is a sad situation in our Church these days when parents who wish to baptize their infants cannot find suitable godparents because of one overriding issue: the question of marriage. To be a godparent in the Catholic Church – and we're not talking about just St. Henry parish in Buckeye, Arizona – to be a Catholic godparent anywhere in the world, means that the person(s) have themselves received the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, 1st Communion and if the person is married, he/she must have been married sacramentally in the Catholic Church. If there is any parish not following these requirements, they are not practicing what the Church teaches. With such a large number of Catholics marrying outside the definitions of our faith, the search for proper godparents becomes a real challenge for young couples. Let's take a look at the situation. The Catholic Church recognizes the legal status of civil marriages but does not view them as being sacramental (formed as a covenant between the couple and God). We respect the legal contract of civil marriages, the love and children within such a union, but since the Church claims marriage as her own, we require all believers who are called to the married state in life to be married in accord with the dictates of their faith! We need couples to publicly witness to the God-like aspect of their union, not just the practical, romantic, or legal aspects. This is no different than how the Church requires all men who want to be considered "preachers" or "ministers" to submit to the authority of the Church and to become ordained by the Catholic Church and not by some other institution or to self-profess that they are now "priests." If you are currently civilly married, we invite you to begin the process of raising your marriage to the level of a sacrament: a public witness to the presence of Christ in your family; an admission of the superiority of God and God's power to help you stay focused on the purpose for marriage; a statement that husband and wife have embraced the role of sacrifice in their lives and the movement away from selfishness; a sign that by the grace of God the two individuals will arrive in heaven through the vocation of service to spouse and family. Please contact Nancy Vela 386-6407 x301 to begin the discussion. The Easter Vigil The Easter Vigil is the Mass that first declares the Easter Pronouncement that "Christ is Risen!" If there are adults in need of baptism, this is the night for their entrance into the Catholic Church. This year at St. Henry, we have no adults being baptized, and so the Mass will be much like a normal Easter Mass except that there are additional readings and psalms proclaimed at the beginning of the Mass. The Mass is usually about 30 minutes longer. Since our parking is limited at the new church and we expect a FULL HOUSE on Easter Sunday morning, we highly encourage parishioners to consider attending this evening vigil Mass which begins at 7:30pm with the outdoor lighting of the Easter Fire & Paschal Candle. The Mass will be in English & Spanish.
