The Bulletin - St. Andrew Catholic Church
December 4, 2016 Second Sunday of Advent St. Andrew Catholic Church 806 NE Alberta Street Portland, OR 97211 Father Dave Zegar Tel: 503-281-4429 Fax: 503-281-4411 [email protected] www.standrewchurch.com St. Andrew is a faith community baptized into one body, which honors and celebrates diversity. We welcome and include persons of every color, language, ethnicity, origin, ability, sexual orientation, gender expression, marital status, and life situation. La Parroquia de San Andrés es una comunidad bautizada en un cuerpo, que honra y celebra la diversidad. Acogemos a las personas de todos colores, lenguas, razas, origenes, habilidades, orientación sexual, estado civil y estilos de vida. Parish Mission St. Andrew Parish recognizes that, as Jesus Christ was sent by God to “bring the good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives, and to the blind new sight, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the Lord’s year of favor,” (Luke 4:18) La Parroquia de San Andrés reconoce que, así como Jesús fue enviado por Dios “para traer la Buena Nueva a los pobres, para anunciar libertad a los cautivos, y a los ciegos nueva luz. Poner en libertad a los oprimidos y proclamar el año de gracia del Señor,”(San Lucas 4:18) ....so it is the mission of St. Andrew Parish to be a visible presence of Christ in our culturally and racially diverse neighborhood, rooted in the Gospel and nurtured by liturgy, prayer, and the community of faith. As such we commit ourselves to work with the poor, the powerless, and the oppressed for the liberation of all; to seek justice, compas- sion, and peace in our lives, community, and world; and to proclaim and celebrate God’s unconditional love for all. December 4, 2016 Second Sunday of Advent Announcement PREPARE YE! Prepare ye a way for the Lord! John runs before the Lord, baptizes for repentance, and proclaims that the kingdom of heaven is nearby. All this brings us hope for God’s help, help, not just in our daily lives but also for our entry into paradise. When the root of Jesse blossoms, all is possible because the Lord Jesus comes to save us for God. Our Redeemer and Savior restores all to its place. Ecce Agnus Dei! Text, Philip J. Sandstrom, STD © 2001, OCP. All rights reserved. Today’s Readings Isaiah 11: 1 - 10 Psalm: Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace forever. Consisting of four candles (three purple and one pink) arranged in a circle with evergreen boughs (and often a fifth, white candle in the center), the Advent wreath corresponds to the four Sundays of Advent. The purple candles represent the penitential nature of the season, while the pink candle calls to mind the respite of Gaudete Sunday. (The white candle, when used, represents Christmas.) From www.catholicism.about.com Save the DATES We will decorate the church for Christmas on Sunday December 18th at 2:00 PM. Many hands will make for light work. CATHOLIC WOMEN PREACH Catholic Women Preach is an innovative project designed to address some of the most pressing challenges facing the Church today by responding to Pope Francis’ call for broader and more active engagement of the baptized in the preaching mission of the Church. This project is a deeply faithful, hopeful and joyful initiative intended to build up the Church. A project of global reach, Catholic Women Preach uses modern technology to bring the voices of diverse Catholic women to the proclamation of the Gospel through webbased resources. Following the liturgical year, Catholic women will reflect on how the texts relate to all Catholics today with a special emphasis on the lives of women, their apostolic call, and their roles in the Church and the world. Their preaching will highlight women traditionally omitted or misrepresented in our lectionary and open the Scripture texts to deepen our understanding of God’s saving presence in the world. Those who view these preaching videos will have the opportunity to see the deep spirituality of Catholic women who preach. Go to: www.catholicwomenpreach.org HELP the FOOD PANTRY We need canned fruit. Right now, they have to buy all canned fruit. Please bring a can of fruit and place it in the basket at the ambo during the collection or put it in the barrels at the entrance to the church. Thank you. Not there is, but there shall be. Oh couldn’t you cry? Shall. Will. On that day. Future tense. Justice shall flower in his days. Shall…Which means—what? That we are still burdened with the present inadequacies and even the present idiocies of the human condition, its pain and dislocation. That we have still to walk on roads pot-holed with wars and after-wars; that we have to live with the memories we wish were not. But, listen. Our impressions of time are unreliable: Then. Now. Not yet. But we are misled. We think then: God has entered and captured the human condition. He has accomplished his Great Work. Now; we are caught in the tangles and shards of what we have made of that adventure. Not yet: Tomorrow. Someday. But what if…What if not yet is already here, dark and smudged and incomprehensible. But here. What if not yet is already now. What if Advent is a hand reaching through a bank of fog, holding together, all at once, what we think of as then and not yet. In the Now. What if the glory that is to come is already here, and the fullness of the Adventure is resting in our hearts no matter how dim and confused and unsatisfactory that rest is feeling. Hold out your heart. The unfelt certainty of now rests lightly there. What has been and is and will be: the now that is forever.
